Aguascalientes (officially the Free and Sovereign State of Aguascalientes) is just one of the 31 states (along with the Federal District, making it 32 Federal entities) of Mexico. In Spanish, the city’s name means ‘ hot waters’ due to the large amount of hot springs in the area. Natives often call it ‘the perforated city’ (La Ciudad Perforada) after the city’s passages and catacombs. The city was founded back in 1575, and was once an outpost until 1857 guarding against the Chichimec Indians. Later, it served as a major rail road junction.

Dining

To try some regional cuisine, there’s La China Hilaria, and for more authentic Mexican fare, try Meson del Taco. For mostly, tacos, there’s Los Mixes. For international cuisine, there’s De Andrea Alameda, and for those missing American fare, there’s Applebee’s. When looking for quick, cheap eats, there’s Mercado Teram where you grab a burrito on the go. Don't forget the restaurant back at the hotel and their breakfast buffets. There’s plenty of bars and clubs about. Wander around the city finding your own favourite watering holes, or ask hotel and casino staff to point you in the direction of popular venues. Many clubs go well into the morning, so plan on perhaps beginning your evenings out a bit later than normal. There's also a bar in the hotel. Local festivals include La Feria de San Marcos, with many road-side cantinas serving up all your favourite cocktails. The festival runs from mid April to early May. Outdoor enthusiasts might enjoy hiking through the Huejucar Canyon. For various water activities there’s the Jocoque Presa and Plutarco Elias Calles Dam. For rock climbing, try Ejido Ecoturistco el Ojote. Sports fans can check out Estadio Victoria (football), home of the Necaxa, or the Estadio Cuarto Centenario (basketball). Visit the La Plaza Patria, built back in 1808, the Government Palace and the Municipal Palace. Rest by the El Jardin de los Palacios (Palace Gardens), with its two relief sculptures and fountain. Over near the main square you can find an 18th century baroque cathedral. Other attractions include the Teatro de la Ciudad, Teatro Morelos, Jardin de San Marcos, Jardin del Encino, Parque Mexico, Parque del Cedazo, Parque Tres Centurios and Centro Cultural los Arquitos. Local museums include Museo de Arte Moderno, Museo Jose Guadalupe Posada, Museo Nacional de la Nuerte and the Museum of Aguascalientes.
