Sometimes referred to as the ‘pearl of the Gulf’, Ciudad del Carmen (or simply Carmen) is located on Carmen Island, which is on the Laguna de Terminos on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. The city has a population of roughly 155,000 people, and back in 2006, celebrated its 150th anniversary as a city. There’s some great regional dishes found here, with their Caribbean and pre-Hispanic roots, but it’s probably most famous for its seafood offerings. The city, outside of its oil, is primarily a fishing city, and there’s plenty of seafood to be found. Try along the pier and waterfront, visiting various restaurants and stalls to get your fill. If it’s an activity you enjoy, you can also find some great fishing yourself. Try around the gulf and lagoon and drop your line, sit back, and unwind.

Gaming

The casino brings you a selection of classic and video slot machines, in varying denominations. Opt for a jackpot or progressive machine. A sizeable win, and those pesky drink and dinner tabs could go away. If you need to scratch that bingo itch, they provide electronic bingo terminals. To wager on, and root for, your favourite horses and sports teams, head over to the casino’s sportsbook.

Hotel/Accommodations

There are no hotels on site. At around 2 km from the casino, you can find the Hacienda Real Hotel. This colonial and modern décor 5 star hotel offers 106 single and double standard rooms, junior suites and presidential suite. The hotel first opened in 2000 and has already undergone recent refurbishments. Spend some time talking to the hotel staff, so you can get suggestions on which bars and restaurants to frequent and insight into all the local major and lesser-known attractions.

Dining

Campeche cuisine, with its pre-Hispanic and Caribbean roots, offers dishes with distinct flair. Considering the city has a large fishing industry, this is a great time to sample various seafood dishes like pescado en escabeche (pickled fish) and pan de cazon (fried tortilla with dogfish, beans and tomato sauce). Other regional dishes you might like are jamon claveteado (clove ham), tamales colados, and frijol con Puerco (pork and kidney beans). Walk along the waterfront and near the pier where there’s restaurants and food-stalls or try one of the local restaurants like El Vaquero, with menu items like steaks and sausage, Picanha’s Grill, with its sausage, pork loin, chicken parmesan and salad bar, El Marino with its shellfish platters and Samba Grill for its meat, soup and salad buffet.

Attractions/NightLife

When the sun sets and you’re looking for night life, try Plataforma (in the Carmen Fun Cetre) for drinks and dancing, Tantra (in the Eurohotel) also for dancing, or Voga, for a lounge-style environment. During days, cast your line out in the gulf or lagoon and see what fish the region has. Check out the museum over in the Victoriano Nieves Cespedes Hospital Building, or the Iglacio del Virgen del Carmen, dating back to colonial times. If you head over to the Parque Principal Zaragosa, near the waterfront and across from the Municipal Palace, on Thursday or Sunday evenings, you might catch a free concert. If you appreciate architecture, there’s the Puente el Zacatal (the Zacatal Bridge), constructed in 1994 and one of the longest in Latin America.

Rewards/Deals

The casino does not currently have a player rewards system in place. Speak to staff about any possible contests or promotions that might be running during your stay.
