Culiacan is the largest city in the state of Sinaloa, and has a population of about 675,000. It lies in north western Mexico in a valley at the confluence of the rivers Hamaya and Tamazula. If you’re looking to hit the surf and sand, try Altata Beach or its sister beach Isla Cortes. Here, you can find white sand, night life and dining options. If you don’t mind the 30 minute drive just outside the city, head to the Imala hot springs where you can also find reservoirs and dams.

Gaming

The casino offers a little bit of everything save for table games. If you’re keen on bingo, look for their electronic bingo terminals. For slots fans, there’s a selection of classic and video slot machines. Try your hand at a jackpot machine so you needn’t worry about those pesky bar and dinner bills. If you’re someone who’d rather wager on horse races and international sporting events, head to the casino’s on-site sportsbook.

Hotel/Accommodations

There are no hotels on site, but at just one half kilometre from the casino you can find The Three Rivers Hotel, designed with colonial Mexican architecture in mind. The ‘Los Tres Rios’ offers rooms which complement their outdoor gardens and facilities include an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a restaurant serving international cuisine, a disco, fitness centre, meeting rooms and currency exchange. Wireless internet access is available on site.

Dining

Try any number of restaurants throughout the city, serving authentic Mexican cuisine, or try some regional dishes, best served up in La Mariposa Amarilla (the yellow butterfly). Menu items include fish, beef and salads. For seafood items like octopus, scallops, and squid try either Los Arcos or El Farallon. When looking for Italian, there’s Italianni’s. For Chinese, there’s Huy Fong, open 8:30 am to 8 pm, or China-loa, with its buffets. Back at the hotel, the restaurant dishes up international cuisine.

Attractions/NightLife

When it’s time to hit the city for some night life, try one of the local clubs. O Lydia Discotheque, aka ‘the Pyramid of Everlasting Fun’ has an Egyptian-inspired décor and can hold 1200 people. Penthouse Klub slants more upscale. For live music, there’s Kuwa. If you’d like to catch a game, try one of the local stadiums. For football, there’s the Estadio Banorte (once the Estadio Carlos Gonzales), with their home team, the Los Dorados de Sinaloa, or the baseball stadium, the Estadio Angel Flores, home of the Los Tomateros de Culiacan. Parks include the Las Riveras Park (or Riversides Park), with its bike trails and pedal boats, and Ernesto Millan Escalante Park, with its artificial lake, gardens, theatre and water slide. Parque Constitucion has the Regional History Museum. Bring the family to the Botanical Garden and Centro de Ciencias de Sinaloa, a science centre housing the 5th largest meteorite on Earth. Kids will enjoy a day at Splash Club. Or try the Culiacan Zoo. For a night of culture, there’s the Centro Cultural Genaro Estrada, home of the Orquesta Sinfonica Sinaloa de las Artes. Other attractions include the La Lomita, or Templo de Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe, tallest church in Culiacan, and the Imala hot springs outside the city. For shopping, malls include Plaza la Campina, Plaza Fiesta, Plaza Galerias San Miguel (2nd largest mall) and Forum Culiacan Mall (largest in the city).
