Plumtree Casino

Located about 100 km southwest of the nearest major city (Bulawayo) is the small town of Plumtree. The town has marula trees scattered about which reminded early settlers of the plum tree, giving the town its name. The local population sits at about 2000 people and for tourists, it’s pretty much just a stop-over between Bulawayo and Francistown, Botswana 85 km further out. Unfortunately, the idea is pretty far from the concept of ‘tourist mecca’ and as such there isn’t a great deal to do in the area. You could grab lunch or hit a local watering-hole, but it’s more likely you’ll be here topping up gas or re-checking the map. If you find you are in the area for a bit of time, there is a small casino in town with a handful of slots.

Gaming

The casino pretty much caters to locals and people passing through. The selection is really light, with just 35 slot machines and video poker terminals and zero table games. At best, it’s really somewhere to stop in and grab your bearings before heading out to your next destination. If you’re loading up on gas or refreshing supplies, it could help to kill an hour, perhaps two. With any luck, a slots jackpot could pay for your day’s travels. After a long day of driving, it might serve as a decent respite before heading back out.

Hotel/Accommodations

There are no hotels in Plumtree and you’ve a fair bit of more traveling to go before the nearest one at 98 km away. If you chat up locals, you might find a lodge for rent in town. Accommodations can be found on the Botswana side of the border in the town of Tshesebe or in Francistown. Unless your goal is to soak up local culture or have a personal reason to stay in the area, you might want to consider continuing on through after re-fuelling and getting a bit of gamble on.

Dining

There are no listings on local eateries. Talk to locals in the area or staff at the casino about suggestions on popular restaurants in town dishing up authentic African cuisine or load up the cooler before arriving for packed lunches. By the same token, your next stop is probably about 100 km out, so load up on water and munchies if able.

Attractions/NightLife

Frankly, outside of the casino, there’s very little to do in town. You can walk about looking for a local watering-hole or restaurant but the casino is pretty much about the only area of interest. Chat up the casino staff about any lesser-known areas of interests nearby or local curiosities.

Rewards/Deals

The casino does not have any player rewards systems in place. It’s basically a matter of spinning and hopefully winning and padding your wallet a bit to fund your meals and African holiday and sating that gambling itch.
