Interesting information from the PPA's Washington drive for legalisation

John Pappas, executive director of the Poker Players Alliance, revealed some interesting legislative developments during the Alliance's National Poker Week visit to Washington DC this week.

The well-connected executive said that Senator Robert Menendez of New Jersey is currently preparing a bill to bring online casino regulation to the Senate as a companion to Congressman Barney Frank's HR 2267 seeking to legalise online gambling in the United States.

Such an initiative may help the passage of the Frank bill, especially if it makes faster progress in the Senate. If both bills pass, then the process of blending and reconciling the two should not present too difficuly a problem, hopefully bringing the proposals to fruition this year.

However, opponents of the legalisation of online gambling appear to have embarked on a spoil and delay strategy, perhaps fearful that if allowed to get to a vote the leralisation bills will pass.

Allied to EU protests against the UIGEA and moves by individual states emphasising states' autonomy in gambling issues, the Senate move by Senator Menendez adds an interesting new dynamic to the United States legislative scenario.
