talian online gambling market expansion to come thanks to the court’s decision
This week, after six months of a legislative dead-end, a Lazio court passed a decision which will clear the way for the introduction of online cash game poker and casino action into the Italian market.
The whole delay was caused by a litigation initiated by the giant Italian network provider Microgame last June, which claimed that the proposed AAMS regulations further opening up the Italian market had quite notable differences from those submitted to the European Commission for approval, thus causing a disadvantage to Microgame's 120 network members, incurring additional costs of up to Euro 100 000 each.
Based on the court decision, the complaints had been addressed as early as July, when the AAMS resubmitted its draft law to the EC. It is assessed by observers that AAMS will soon be able to move forward, and that new gambling genres may be introduced as early as Q1 2011.
