Online casino 848.com faces fine

Despite its reputation of a country with an extremely negative position when it comes to online gambling and any competition to entrenched local interests, this week Greece turned into a scene of a litigation between a land casino and an internet gambling site.

The Gibraltar-licensed online casino 848.com, powered by Dragonfish/Cassava in the 888.com group, and its marketing provider Master Media, became a subject of a suit filed by the Mount Parnes Casino Resort in Dytiki Elada, Greece, which considers that the online gambling company breaches the EU laws.

The litigation’s subject is the advertising of 848.com, particularly on billboards, throughout Greece and the Balkan states.

According to the local media, the government in Greece and its judiciary support the Parnes case, explaining that, since the online casino takes bets from Greeks without obtaining a license or authorization from the Greek authorities, it is prohibited advertise it on the Greek territory.

An additional fine of EUR3,000 was imposed upon Master Media Systems, to be applied in respect of each case where the advertisement appears.
