Authorities claim TV games of chance are subject to gambling tax
The Belgian tax inspectorate ( (l’Inspection spéciale des impôts) seems to be very decisive in its aim to collect millions of Euros in unpaid gambling taxes from Belgian media on television gambling games, which included the use of text message voting or premium rate numbers.
Namely, it has been stated that the chance-based games fall under Belgian gambling law and as such are subject to gambling taxation and their operators are obliged to pay them even though they have already paid value-added-tax.
The sums involved in the demanded taxes, which go back to 2009 and 2010 and include a fine five times the amount owed, are expected to amount to tens of millions of Euros.
