Probably preparing for regulation and licensing of online gambling in the country, the Colombian land gambling regulator Coljuegos has issued a warning to ‘illegal’ online operators to leave or stay away from the country, at the same time calling on locals to report any incidents of internet gambling.
The regulator's president, Rodrigo Vélez Jara warned about punitive action, including a 'bad actor' five year ban from applying for any future licensing that may evolve, noting that online gambling is illegal in the country at present. Reportedly, the measures against illegal operators that the regulator is considering include IP blocking and possible restrictions on financial processing.
This may be a move to protect future licensees in the country, having in mind that Coljuegos started work on a regulatory and licensing system last year, with an aim to compose a proposed new law on the legalization of online gambling.
According to Jara, online gambling will soon be made available to Colombians.
