Portuguese Gambling Licenses to be Issued in 2016

Online gambling regulation has been approved in Portugal but implementation could take longer than anticipated.

Esperança Figueiredo, a director of the new regulatory body, Serviço de Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos, has said that the body will not likely be prepared to begin the approving licenses before the end of the year but the first quarter of 2016 is what they are shooting for.

Until operators have received their licenses, it is still illegal to operate an online gambling site in Portugal.

"We suggest also to visit the site of Regulatory Services and Inspection Games in www.srij.turismodeportugal.pt where you can see all the information about gambling and betting online, including the publication of the entities that can legally develop their activity in Portugal," said Figueiredo in an email.

Wow, the first quarter of 2016 isn't that far from now unless you happen to be a gambler in Portugal, then it may seem like an eternity. And they didn't say it would be completed in the first quarter of 2016, they said they were shooting for the first quarter of 2016, so maybe not. I can understand how they feel about waiting, since I live in the US. W we've been waiting a very long time and we're still waiting.

I miss the old days before Denmark started licensing casino's. Back then you could play at any casino. After the law for licensing in 12 some of the best casino's like 32red and many others just wouldn't pay the high cost of the Danish license so the Danish player lost a lot of quality in terms of the high number of good casino's previously available to choose from. But I don't blame the government from their point of view it is a source of revenue that they should take advantage of somehow. I just wish they had figured out how to do so without making the market poorer from the player's perspective at least.
