Veronica Castillo was playing a Slot at the Lucky Eagle Casino in Washington when she suddenly hit a life changing $8 million jackpot. You can imagine the excitement when she saw the 7-figure win but the casino claims that the machine malfunctioned and handed her an $80 voucher.
Castillo, a mortgage loan officer, and her mother visited the Rochester casino over the weekend. She fed $100 into the machine and thought she had an amazing win.
She spoke to local media, Koin 6, and said, “I was very excited, happy. Then I couldn’t believe it.”
Casino staff approached her explaining that the machine had malfunctioned.
“They shut off the machine, took it away, printed out a ticket and gave me $80.”
The gaming machines display a sticker that advises players that a malfunction will void all pays and plays to which Castillo says, “To me, it’s cheating, may even be fraudulent. My first thought was, how many people has this happened to? They think they won, then going away empty-handed.”
Lucky Eagle Casino CEO John Setterstrom has been with the company since before it opened its doors in 1995. He said that nothing like this has ever occurred and the casino has turned to the Slot manufacturer for information.
Setterstrom doesn’t want to lose a player but Castillo is seeking legal advice.
Despite signage, the maximum payout on a machine and how gut wrenched she must be, do you think Ms. Castillo has a case against the casino or the Slot manufacturer?

Oh the poor thing :( I know my excitement when ive had a miinor win...anything from a few hundred upwards lol,i near would faint at the sight of a figure like that!! My heart would probably then stop when told it was a malfunction, how cruel?!! i agree with a couple of the previous posts, the money casinos make should be only one reason why they are responsible to pay up! if it happens on such an odd occasion one would think it wouldnt be such a big hassle for the gold mines. You would think the added attention and flow of customers it would bring due to media reports etc would be an added incentive to do whats right. People would flock in knowing such a payout existed there! i wish her all the best and itll be interesting to see how it pans out, theres no excuse for machines in this day and age with the technology we have to be 'malfunctioning' to that extreme

I agree with Klaus. The profits for casinos are very large. It should be 100% their responsibility to prevent this from happening. And if it does, they should pay it. Period.

If the max jackpot would have been $20,000, the casino should at least pay her this amount. I really hope this poor lady will seek a clever lawyer and sue the casino!

Disgusting. In cases like this there should be one outcome only. The casino is liable to pay that win out and its their responsibility to ensure machines work correctly, make sure every machine is secure, and are that all the software on them is 100% reliable. The casino is liable to pay that win out and its their responsibility to ensure machines work correctly, make sure every machine is secure, and are that all the software on them is 100% reliable. So what the machine malfunctioned - that isnt the punters problem. Its simple. If the machine is good enough to take punters cash without question, and that machine is actively taking peoples money, then regardless of software errors or display malfunctions, you should payout if they win - those issues are your problem as a casino, not a punters. At the least a hefty fine and review of the operators licence should be put in place, offering faulty and unreliable gambling machines for punters to feed money is basically fraud..... How much cash did that machine take in from punters since it was put live? How many other identical machines are in the casino with potentially same issue? Every single penny of profit from those particular machines should be seized from the casino along with an independent assessment of the machines in addition to independent access to their backend system, just to make sure there is nowt dodgy going on.

I saw the info on Lucky Eagle official site, that this machine's max payout is $20,000, so it just unable to give $8,5 millions winning and they prove it was a display malfunction. Real winning at that spin was $10.50. But the fact of this mulfunction is terrible. I can imagine worst feeling of Veronica at the moment. And...

And I think it's manufacturer or service company fault, she could take the to the court just for that big stress she had.

I feel so bad for Veronica Castillo! As somebody mentioned, having something like this happen is one of my fears, I think it would be one of the worst days in my life if I thought I had won a huge life-changing amount of money and then it was taken away. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure that most real casinos would have done...

As somebody mentioned, having something like this happen is one of my fears, I think it would be one of the worst days in my life if I thought I had won a huge life-changing amount of money and then it was taken away. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure that most real casinos would have done enough to legally cover themselves in case of equipment malfunctions and she probably doesn't have much hope of getting more money out of them over and above the $80.

Quite simple actually, If the machine is programmed to pay out $8million then she has a case. If not then the machine malfunctioned.

I agree with a lot of the comments people have said, this player deserves this win, so i hope that they do pay her in the end and she goes all the way. and doesnt get put of by keep fighting it until she gets her money and all the answers she deserves. Let this be a warning to us all, all these land based casinos and online casinos are just a scam and all they are doing in the long term is just stealing our money.

in my personal opinion the fact that the casino staff immediately took the slot machine away is a clear sign they wanted to hide any evidence. that stinks. the 80$ voucher is ridiculous, facing the fact that just at this visit the player fed that casino with at least 100$. that casino is lansbased, however it should be...

This is everyone gambler nightmare, when you will hit the jackpot and you will not be payed off... I hope this woman will sue them, and receive some % of this huge amount of money. It's casino fault that they have malfunctioned software or whole machines - not the players.

I think that the casino might want to protect it's reputation by paying the money anyway, especially if this is the only time such an incident has occurred. I assume the manager meant the only time a huge sum of money has been voided because of malfunction. I also think that they should have an independent regulatory body...

I assume the manager meant the only time a huge sum of money has been voided because of malfunction. I also think that they should have an independent regulatory body that the player can complain to and that the case should be investigated by that independent third party regulatory group. I assume legal casino's have such an entity in the US, but I don't know really. But yeah that really is a crushing dissapointment for the woman who won but didn't win. She must have been so high only to be brought so low. Eight million! OUCH!

I would raise holy hell. In fact, if I lived in Washington I would be out front picketing on this womans behalf. This sounds like bullcrap once again. Don't try to tell me that they can't afford to pay off. They could make that up in no time. Do your stuff lawyers, earn your 2 2/3 million, which is too bad she'll have to...

Don't try to tell me that they can't afford to pay off. They could make that up in no time. Do your stuff lawyers, earn your 2 2/3 million, which is too bad she'll have to give up at least that much, maybe more, just to collect her winnings. If the casino is in business, that is the chance they take. Shut the place down then, and buy a McDonalds. Pure Greed.
