  • Hiya LCB'ers,

I can't even begin to tell ya the countless times i have made broken promises to myself. Especially driving to the land casino. On the way it's like a ritual. I am sooooo confident and have such faith in myself as i say.........."i will not write a check or use my debit card and only spend the cash in my purse.

The funny thing is.......i actually believe this!! I really think i'm going to waltz in a casino and not spend a dime over what i say i am going to spend. As an insurance i will leave my check book and debit card in the car.

No sooner do i lose every dime i have, i find myself walking to my car. It can be parked 2 miles away....a hail storm.....a funnel cloud sighted or a blizzard and i'm merrily trudging through it. Now ask me if i would do the same thing if i had to walk to the store for a quart of milk in inclement whether..........hell no!!!

All the while i am walking to my car i block out all the promises i made to myself like it was a bad memory i am trying to shake! I walk back in the casino on cloud 9 ready to rumble again only to find that i have lost even more money!

Of course the ride back home is never quite as hopeful as the ride there. Visions of self control on the way there have now turned into visions of driving my car off a cliff or the nearest ditch!

Oh but i think i am so clever and will retrieve my losses by not buying certain things at the store!! Oh bananas are .69 a lb.....i refuse to spend that kind of money or Gee i really don't want steaks this week.......i settle for a mac n cheese!

I mean lets face it who wants to spend their hard earned dollars on food items that are outrageous.....we work to hard for our money to spend it so frivolously right?

  • Yeah it happens that way more often than not with some people.  Some can control there casino budget and others have problems.  That's why I decided to make sure I can't bring my debit card places.  Otherwise if I go to a land based casino I try way too hard to win because I know I'll get paid instantly if I do.  Otherwise for an internet casino I find it easier to budget my gambling wages just because you know you'll only get your money so fast.  Meaning most of the times even with speedy paying casinos like 3Dice your still waiting 3 business days for a wire.  That's a bit of a wait especially if you over spent.  So I try to avoid land based casinos at all costs.

  • I never take my debit card with me to a casino. That way I am not tempted. I think I am pretty disciplined when it comes to gambling. I allow myself a certain amount and so far I have stuck to it. Maybe it's because I do feel like I am wasting hard earned money sometimes.

  • my most embarassing moment was when I had to ask people in the parking lot some spare changes to pump some gas to my car so I could drive home.  My car was out of gas and I told myself to save at least $20 for gas if I happened to lose on that day.  I left all my cards at home and just brought some cash to the casino.  Most of people who left the casino were losing and they couldnt help or even worse some would laugh at me afterward (you deserve it, you should play what you afford to lose, this was probbly their thought).  I drove my car to the nearest gas station, kept asking people for some changes, then one lady didnt have small changes, she gave me $20 instead and told me to spend it all.  OMG, I wish I could see that lady again someday so I could say million thanks to her and pay her back 10x the amount she gave me if she accepts it.  It was on raining day, 4 o'clock in the morning, I was cold, tired, hungry, no money, and 1 hr away from home.  I stop going to land based casino since that experience.  sad sad sad sad sad sad

that sucks taadaaa.  i have one bad experience, and i will never be this stupid again.  i was saved by a state trooper.  i used up all the change in my car to fill the tank and it only got me half way home.  it was in the middle of the winter also.  i was on the wide open interstate with no phone, no coat, no heat, no gas...freezing my butt off.  don't remember how long i was out there, but the state trooper let me in his car to warm up.
he was off duty, he even took me to a gas station, bought me a coffee, got enought gas to put in a gas can, then gave me $20. out of his pocket to fill it.  I was so embarrassed, I never did anything so stupid again.
The usual casino I went to is pretty smart, and has a gas station/food mart attached to the casino that you can use your comp card with.  I used to get about 100+ a night in comps so I would load up on gas, and get some juice, bread, milk...couple healthy things, so I didn't feel like I wasted ALL my money  grin
  • My dumbest moment.

I had a good couple of days in Atlantic City....was up about $3000.  I put my winnings in a sealed envelope inside my coat pocket.  A voice inside my head kept saying GO HOME.  GO HOME...YOU DID WELL, NOW GO HOME!

    Did I listen?

I blew the whole $3000 in about an hour on table games.  It was like I was in a "stupid trance."  I kick myself even to this day.

Ahhhhh.....the gambler's personality has many dark places!

  • You know all you have to do is not bring you card and check book. Just money you are going to us. Always make sure you can make it home be for you go. If you can stay with that it is always fun to go play.

That what I was going to say...lol, looks like you left the house without even attempting self control, otherwise you woulda left everything at home!! Oh and the " take those in case of emergency" excuses don't cut it there....lol

Lips, that was so funny the way you explained that. I'm still laughing.

I actually pad myself on my shoulder after I do this. I say something like...at least I put 20 in the tank...like that even makes up for the 500 i just blew...lol
  • Lips, many have been there and done that.

I do find humor (Sort of) in many times we always promise ourselves to do this or that. The incrediable struggles we have when faced with a couple of choices and one is to stop and walk away.

I've been winning that a bit more lately. Don't feel bad, we all have done this or at least most of us. smiley

Keep smiling and posting, the truth hurts, but the confession heals grin

hehehehehehehe...doc i am laughing SO loud!!! i get a lot of those stupid trances, as a matter of fact, i have had one long run of them last couple weeks  shocked shocked shocked oh noooooo!!
  • Great thread Lips.  I think we've all been there in one way or another.  Im ok with setting a budget when I gamble. If I say 100 bucks and thats it, then thats it.  Mainly because I detest those insane ATM fees. My problem is when I win, I can't seem to push the cash out button.  Just last night I made through a $1,500 WR, with 700$ left over BUT then blew it today. Ugh I can't tell you how many times this has happened and then Im just left feeling so dumb and reckless.  I remind myself that I only invested $50 and DID manage to have fun for many, many, many hours.

  • Well...since I fessed up to my extreme dumb moment, let me dust off my old psychologist's hat and put it on.

Gambling is a POWERFUL stimulant.  It does stuff to the brain that nothing else does.  This is why we have these dark-humor stories of people blowing all their cash.

By the way....my newest safegaurd for not blowing my money at the land casino:  I bring a metal cash box with me in my suitcase.  I lock it before I leave and leave the key AT HOME.  When I win money, I simply insert it in the slit opening on top of the cash box.

    This works!  Try it.

  • When you're gambling, you dont see the value of money.and thats why you keep playing when you win. you'll miss it when it's gone.

  • lol, great idea

  • Thanks guys for all your replies. It is fun to find a bit of humor in our gambling antics where we would otherwise want to jump off a bridge. Yes i suppose i could leave my credit card and ck book at home.....but ya got to remember....i totally believe in myself on the way there and really think i won't touch it!!

I will never forget a woman i sat next to while playing video poker one night. We as  side by side for nearly an hour when she turns to me with complete despair in her eyes. She begins to tell me how she was on the way to pay her cell bill that her husband had given her money for. It had to be due the following day or her and her husbands cell would be turned off.

She heads out to the store to pay it when she decides to make a U turn. She blew every last nickel she had. Was afraid to go home and explain this to her husband. My heart broke as she began to get up and walk away. 10 minutes later she returns and wrote a check that she said would bounce if she didn't win.

I was a wreck for her...i watched her machine more than i watched my own that day! I left my machine before she did and padded her on the back and wished her the best of luck!

The jams we self inflict upon ourselves.........all we can do is later look back and laugh!

Oh and one more thing before i go......gas......oh my i could tell ya gas stories riding down the expressway at 4 am and my needle is on E the entire 45 minute trudge! Hands on the steel wheel with white knuckles.....sweat forming on my brow as i pray to God i will make it home and not run out of gas in the middle of the highway!

Ahhhhh it's these fun times in a gamblers world that keep life interesting and living on the edge!!

Lips...what a beautiful story.  So true to life for a true gambler.  You are so right.  I am so frugal with my spending, and will be the first one to bitch when prices go up...but think nothing of blowing a few grand in one night on NOTHING...I don't any explaination for it.  And God forbid, when I hear those words...what did you do with all your money??  Its hard to explain away a couple hundred...but when you get into the thousands, sometimes I don't even understand it myself.  Of everything I have ever had, all I ever really wanted was a little more self control.  So hard.....
Let me know if you figure it out.  I had it for three days.
I actually had a little smidge of it today at the bakery.  I went and bought a couple of my peeps a Valentine goodie and didn't get myself anything.
That was a FIRST! hehe...baby steps  grin grin grin
  • Once I was approached at a casino by woman who was crying, saying she lost all her money and had no way to get home, no money for food, and no place to stay the night since it was after midnight.

I was at a secluded part of a bar having my favorite drink....a Godfather.  I gave her a sly smile and said in a semi joking way..."what would you do for a black chip?"  She burst out laughing and said she would show me her boobs.  So I said "okay."  I swear, right then and there she pulled up her shirt and showed me the A+ work of the good Lord!  I gave her TWO black chips, bought her a drink, and talked for about an hour about light hearted things.  Had lots more laughs.  It was great!

So......being kind and generous has good rewards!  Mr. Jesus is so good to me!
