  • Hi Gang:
First off, forgive me if this topic has been done before.
I was just curious what makes people decide Land  VS Online Casino.  Myself, I live 30 minutes away from a land casino, yet I still prefer on line.  Some of you I know do not have a land based  near you so you choose online.  Why do others choose online  instead of land?  Bonuses? Free chips? Travel Time? Privacy? Coffee is better at home?  Am just curoius how others feel about this.  Or if you prefer a land casino, is it because of free money? No Playthru? Atmosphere?
I appreciate any feedback, and as always Good Luck in your gaming..

  • Actually, that's a good question and I did ask myself at least once before why...I live in near by many Indian Casinos as well but I stay home and play. I work full time so I can only go at night and my hubby will never let me drive at night not to mention he believes there are lots of weird dudes out there...lol so that's the biggest reason but i just like play, sitting in home plus I have a teenager, gotta keep on eyes on her all the time.

  • I think I prefer on line as it is so private. So quiet.  Plus the coffee IS better here at home.  I never have to fight for a particular machine, and no pushing and shoving. I do get a small amount of free money every week, but seldom take advantage of it. I never seem to win with it anyways, and after driving 30 minutes to lose it in 10 minutes really is not fun to me.  I dont need the atmosphere of noise and lights to have a good time.  I love playing at home.  There are so many reasons...

    Thanks for the reply!!!! smiley

  • Closest land casino is 45 minutes away.  (Indian)  I like both, but somtimes I don't want to drive.  Or the weather is just bad.  If I only have a little money, it isn't worth the drive.  You know what I miss, though?  As a long time casino visitor, I really really miss the coins.  Not so much dropping them in (except the 5.00 tokens)  but the watching them fall, HEARING them fall, filling the cups, playing in them (LOL)  and finding old old coins in the lot. Played a dime machine in vegas one time, found quite a few liberty dimes in the dropped coins.  Kept playing just for that!  Wait - were they liberty or was that dollars?  Whatever the old dimes were.... Don't like the paper, they keep messing up, much worse than the coins ever did... but I guess your hands are clean, lol. It also took longer to mess with the coins, your money lasted longer.  A friend and I used to go to Vegas, buy 10 2.00 rolls of nickels, and walked up and down the Strip for hours on them.  We were playing for CARS, too!  Or 50,000.00 - on 5 nickels!  Gotta miss the old days.  When I go to a landbased casino, I like to go very late at night, or very early in the mornings when the machines are "loaded" and pay better.  AND you can have almost any slot you want.  I hate crowds.  I'm a smoker - but I'm sure almost anyone who DOESN'T smoke would prefer to stay at home - I don't know how they could stand it.  Only one smoke free area in the 4 casinos near me.

One other thing - just found out a month ago that 2 or 3 of the Indian casinos near me (OK.) were fined over a million dollars each for setting their payback on the slots too low.  WONDERED why we couldn't win anymore.  Anyway, now they are paying better - gonna go this week, some time.

Sorry - I tend to ramble. Good luck all!

  • Stringer, I must say, I just read your post and enjoyed it so much. It took me back to the days of old when coins were indeed the way to gamble.  Wow, thanks for the post. What an awesome piece to read.  Thanks for sharing....
                                                        PMM2008 wink

  • Very good post stringer....took me back a few years when I used to go to Foxwoods casino just about every weekend.  I also loved the coins, the free drinks, the noise and the bells going off.  I havent been there in a while but I do live about 10 minutes away from a place called Hollywood Slots in Bangor, Maine.  Not very fun though, the slots are terrible and dont pay!!!  I go there every now and then with some friends from work.  I am also a smoker and I like that I can smoke anytime I want in my own home and I can also go to the bathroom without losing my machine!!!

  • How about the fact if we stay and gamble in our own homes we never have to fight for a parking spot up close? I know the land casino I go to close to my home is a madhouse on the weekends, and you have to walk a LONG ways to get to the door from where you parked. I also don't have to sit next to anyone who might spill their drink on me (which happened once.) No waiting in lines at the bathrooms, losing your game as was mentioned, and no one hawking over your shoulder when your on a game that is winning waiting to take your machine.  I have everything I need here at home.                  PMM2008

  • Does anyone remember the old vegas? 20 - 30 years ago?  1.99 steak dinners at the Golden Nugget?  SASSY SALLYS?  Is it still there? "Double Double Jackpot Time"?  And their drinks - 90 percent alcohol?  laugh_out_loud.  THEY made no bones about why they were giving you free drinks.  As for gambling at home: someone did a study for a casino on why they weren't making as much money on slot machines as others - their casino (in Vegas) had high ceilings and was very open - slot players, it turns out, like smaller areas as to be blocked from others - they (mostly) liked to play alone - so people couldn't watch, talk, and otherwise bother them.  Not like, say, craps players, who love crowds.  I like to get into a rythm with a slot - easier to do at home, or at 4 am at a landbased.  I also HATE the sound of other people winning - does that make me evil?  laugh_out_loud.  When you hear those sounds, it makes you jones for a big win yourself, and makes you play more.  (The point of all the noise, actually - that is why they still make the sound of coins falling into a hopper, when there are neither.) It also makes you (I should be probably being saying ME here) grab them and push them away from the slot.  ESPECIALLY when you are playing 4.00 a pull, (I'm talking pennies here) and they are playing 40 cents, and they are making 400.00, and you're making 6.00.  Yes, this happened to me last night.  ARGGH!!!!! Or you are wanting to get on your favorite machine, and some old lady is playing 20 cents, and winning 200.00, and you're next to her, playing 2.00, and winning 10.00.  (Last week.)  The biggest difference to me in land v online is the slots.  I have favorite microgaming slots, and favorite land based slots.  So I play both - I have some favorite RTG slots, but I don't trust them.  It's like video games to me - if you have space invaders on your home computer, but asteroids down the street, you have to go both places to play what you want. I have a friend who doesn't enjoy gambling so much anymore, because she is desperate for money. (I have seen her walk in with 40.00, and walk out with thousands.) But I DO enjoy slots, and go for fun - it is only aggravating, stressful, and decidedly UNFUN to be trying sooooo hard to make money from it... although, of course, I like to do that to.  Or to be trying at the end of the day to be making back the money you lost.
Rambling again.  Tell me if you want me to shut up - not that that would stop me.  laugh_out_loud.

  • Stringer? Another great post!!! Thanks for it.      PMM2008

  • One other thing - I like walking out of a casino with winnings in hand, rather than waiting for them to hit my bank account.  Like the 5,000 I won at GoWild - had to wait for a check, then my bank (credit union) has to hold onto it for 10 banking days to release the money.  Yes, I know, they shouldn't, but they do.

  • What about the Las Vegas "freebies"?  I still have ash trays from Caesers, Golden Nugget, Harrahs, ect. You just took them - stuffed them in your purse, laugh_out_loud.  What the online casinos SHOULD do to keep customer loyal  is mail out little things to their players - ash trays, cup coozies, coin purses, ect. with their logo.  It wouldn't cost them much - it's not as if they have to give us booze, or comp or dinners, or whatnot. But it would be nice to play at Rich Reels, for instance, drinking coffe out of one of their cups, using their ashtray - does that make sense?  Still have a collection of dice, too, from dozens of casinos.  What would that cost them?

  • And thanks all for the kind words about my posts - I'll shut up now - except: PMM2008 - ALWAYS use the valet parking if you can.  Usually free, except for a dollar tip.

  • HAHAHAHAH, VALET??? I am tooo cheap. I could use that last dollar for a machine instead of the tip. Actually, sometimes  I do use valet, and on a Saturday night they are so busy you even have to wait to give them your car, as they hand you your ticket.
Keep those posts coming Stringer, I could not agree more with your idea for online casinos to add little comps for us.  I wont hold my breath though.

  • WOW!!!!!! GREAT POSTS!!!!!!! Keep em coming!!!! LOVE THEM!!!!! You are right when you say that slot players like to be left alone in a quiet area. When I am playing slots I like to be alone. I find that when I am playing a slot machine I am in some zone all by myself, no matter who may be next to me. I find that when I am in Vegas, I like to play early in the morning between 6-7am before the crowds come for the day. Most people are just going to bed at that time after playing all night, but I do not sleep very much anyway and even if I have been up late I still like to rise early, grab a cup of jo, and head to my favorite slot. Geez, all this talk makes me want to go to the airport, hop on a plane and go to Vegas. I am headed there in August for my 50th and hope to have the slot gods shine on me!!!!!! We really don't have any great casinos here in florida. We have a couple of Indian casinos but their slots are so tight and never pay! I never go there for that reason. I prefer a land based casino that I feel gives me a chance at winning. The Indian casinos are really hard to win in and I would rather not waste my cash. I take online slots over Indian Casino slots anyday!!!!!! And you are right PMM when you say that the coffee is better at home!!!!!!! hahahahahahahah!!!!!!!!

  • No one has mentioned this old memory from the old Land Casinos. Coming home and your fingers where all black from touching all the coins. The wet wipes they provided never quite did a good enough job. I always got "caught" once I came home as my hands showed all the evidence from where I had spent the morning....Gambling...
hahahahahaha........I swear, Even LAVA soap wouldn't take that grime off your hands from those coins.  This post has been great fun. Thanks for all the replies..  PMM2008

Carrying those big buckets of coins around was the best!!!!  If you won big, someone would have to go get you another bucket to carry your winnings in up to the cashier where they would dump them all into that huge hopper. (counter)  cheesy cheesy

  • 15 minutes by bike to holland casino (netherlands) the slots are great because the most slots are not allowed online in the netherlands, more realistic than online. sometimes they have live on stage show and last month i won a mystery jackpot (a laptop)
i go there only once a month and maybe less
i spend about 1000euro last time i visit the casino.

  • "Carrying those big buckets of coins around was the best!!!!  If you won big, someone would have to go get you another bucket to carry your winnings in up to the cashier where they would dump them all into that huge hopper. (counter)"

I was in Vegas many years ago at the New York.  I sat beside this man at a nickel machine and took a good look.  He had 1,000 coins on his counter - the machine would only hold 1,000 - so every time he won, the coins would drop into his hopper (that happened to me on a quarter machine once fun! fun! fun!).  His hopper was FULL.  He had large cups full of nickels, 4-6 on each side on him.  He had large cups full of nickels around his feet and chair.  I don't remember how many I counted, but they were piled EVERYWHERE.  I always wondered in he lost any from thieves - how much money he had actually accumalted - if he worked for the casino, and they gave him a set up loose slot to draw people in - how many people it took to carry those to the cashiers cage for him - and also if he's sitting there.  He was (and still winning) when I left.

  • with online casinos no one is going to walk up and put a quarter in the machine you just left and hit a jackpot. all the money you've invested will still be there when you go back to that game.

  • Very good point...About one quarter and the jackpot after you leave the machine.

I suppose there are people that crave the lights , the noise, the crowds, bad coffee, waterdown drinks, and lines to most every restaurant and restroom. If they do, then land casinos are for them. I'm not saying I don't like land casino's as I go often. I do love the fact there is NO waiting for your money if you win except to walk to the cashiers booth and cash out.  I feel it much easier that way as not to change your mind as we all can and have with a "reversed withdrawl."
This post has been ALOTof fun, thanks for all the replys. PMM2008 wink

  • Just got back from a trip to Topeka, KS.  (I live in Wichita).  I haven't been there is years, Ok casinos are closer.  But they have really battened down the hatches on winning in OK, this past year, so I thought I would give Topeka a chance.  They are tighter than Ok - I don't even want to go into how much  money I spent (I had just won 5,000 on the net) - BUT with all I spent, I only once had a tax ticker, and I only once saw another person get one (she actually won 3 jackpots in 15-20 minutes).  LOUSY LOUSY LOUSY!!!!!!!!  Have they tightened up the machines everywhere?  What is the point in gambling if you lose so fast, NEVER get even a 100 credits to keep you spinning, I have had it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And I played ALL types of machines, from pennies to 5.00 (just a little on those).  And I played at ALL hours of the night and day.  Tight times, tighter machines, people are going to stop playing period.  I know I am totally totally disgusted.  I don't mind losing money if you can play and play because you get even little wins.  But CONSTANTLY losing - no fun at all.

  • Hi Gang:
Went to the land casino last night. I am playing slots and not doing so well. The guy next to me leans over and says " Oh, 2 days ago I was playing that machine and hit for $1000."
Don't you just hate when someone does that? Arrrgggghhh >:(

  • Hey Y'all,

I was going to try and keep my post short, sweet, and to the point.  This will be my third attempt, so maybe its the charm.

    Online or Land Based Gambling???

I've lived in Las Vegas for decades now, and have experienced the old Vegas!  I have too many words to describe this unbelievable time, in an incredible town. I could go on for many, pages about the old and the new, but most would find this longwinded not too mention rambling on. SO, short, and sweet.

I play a little online but I like winning the jackpot, the ole' cash in hand, isn't that the reason for playing a game?  I have yet to hear of large jackpot winners, that received their correct winning, in a timely manner, and without a poop-pile of faxed confidential financial paperwork, regarded as necessary for identification.  PLEASE!!!!  And if the winner doesn't supply the crap, who are they going to complain to????  People that barely speak English and in a foreign country!  To long of odds for me, short and sweet. I don't think most players would continue playing a game, they knew they couldn't win?? But, I've been wrong in decisions before!  Maybe its just the proverbial carrot story and I think its BS????

My opinion is landbased hands down.  Just doesn't seem like a win to me when I have to wait for the prize and prove I won it.

    Stay Lucky!

  • Well I must say I had an experience  at the land casino last night that would certainly NEVER happen with an online casino.
We played our free money, was leaving with 60 bucks cold cash, and as we walked out a drunk decided to start yelling.    "Hey" he said over and over. We at this point had no idea if he was talking to us or to himself. He kept yelling, louder and louder..."HEY." Pretty soon we were aware he was following US into the parking lot. He was scary. Big, drunk, and yelling in the worst way for us to turn around. We didn't.  We at this point changed directions and headed back up to the casino entrance, big drunk man right behind us. We had a ways to go though.  At this point he is yelling other things to us I cannot write on our friendly forum.  We run, he runs, we go left, he goes left, we go right, he goes right, yelling for us to stop and turn around.  We make it to the entrance again and grab a car valet guy to get security.  As one of my party leaves with valet ,I stay behind to wait for the drunk guy to show up.  Here he comes.... At this point security comes out and I stood there right next to the drunk guy and point right at his face, "He's the one." I say.  Well, security knew all about this guy. He was drunk, had been kicked out of the casino, and was supposed to be in a cab on his way home. Someone dropped the ball and he snuck away to the parking lot, hence starting our experience. No words on here could define the fear we had while this was going on.  After the haul the guy off to the cab this time, and PUT HIM IN, we decided we would get an escort to our car. We had had enough for one night.  My point I guess, is this would NEVER happen at an ONLINE casino huh? hahaha

  • GET EM PAM!!!  We got ur back hun!!!
