  • Hiya LCB'ers,

The Random Number Generator (RNG) makes it virtually impossible to determine what the next outcome on the reels will be. There are literally thousands, yes thousands of combinations that are generated per second. So, for example even in between spinning the reels the RNG program is busy working overtime continuously creating combinations. So whether you are hitting that play button or not the internal computer in essence is playing nonstop through the RNG. When you spin the slot that is the point where RNG will display the outcome when the spinning reels come to a stop.

The Payout Percentage on a slot is completely different and determines how loose or how tight a slot is. It is a built in program from the manufacturer that will trigger how often a winning payout is allowed. So say a machine is set at 99% payout, that does not mean you are an inevitable winner and come out ahead, not by a long shot. All it basically means is there's a high frequency of winning combinations per spin. But just because you hit winning combinations more often doesn't mean you are a winner. As we all know there a numerous winning combinations on a slot that don't even cover your bet. What it does mean is your bankroll will last longer before eating it up and if you are lucky, you'll hit a big jackpot because of longer playtime and that is a big IF!

So it comes to the controversy; can players really predict when a jackpot is about to hit? As far as thinking you have the RNG pattern figured out the answer is no, it's absolutely impossible. I know this, yet like some players get a sense of when a slot is about to hit and think; is the RNG predictable after all cuz how did i know!

Predicting when a slot is going to hit depends on two factors, you have that "sixth sense" that every gambler has from time to time or it is because it is a high percentage payout machine and you feel it is "overdue" and is about to hit something other than a win that doesn't even cover your bet.

I think this really applies and we have a much greater advantage of "prediction" when we are at land based casinos. You know what slots are hot because you can never get a seat at certain machines and the regulars know what ones are loose and what ones are tight.

If i am on a machine and a player is sitting next to me and just dumped 300 bucks in his machine and lost, i will jump on his machine the second he leaves providing it is a hot high payout percentage machine and play it cuz it is about to pop and many times it will do just that. But these type of loose machines are just a handful when you consider there are 2,000 -  3,000 slots or so in a casino.

  • I have seen those high payout machines and also players pumping tons of cash in. As soon as they get up someone hits. The RNG is such a tricky thing or so I thought. Take into consideration the payout percentage and it's really a matter of knowing what's hot and what's not. I agree with ya on this lips and you certainly did your homework. Fantastic information.

  • In my honest opinion, Lips, BOTH the RNG and the PAYOUT PERCENTAGE play a role in determining revenue returns to the casino, but I do believe that jackpots are heavily RNG driven (hence so much more difficult to win)!

All slot games do have a certain predictability built into them, not exactly each and every time, but predictable enough for a seasoned player to 'sense' a pending win or loss. Each spin is inevitably controlled by the RNG, to avoid repetitive and undesirable outcomes, but the payout percentage ensures that the RNG would generate wins at the right time. The amount of win would depend on the accumulated played amount versus the payout percentage...the bigger the difference the bigger the win! Notice how a game would continue eating up the credits after each big win! That's the 'check and balance' part coming into play and very rarely would another big win follow in close sequence, unless that first big win was not won in totality (eg, won at only 25 cents bet), leaving a big amount still available for another quick win! I have not seen or heard of a third big win anywhere, anytime, but 2 in a quick row, yes.

Consider this...RNG on its own alone may not create any win at all for a long long time...or too many wins in a very short span of spins!!! I do not think that RNG can be reliable enough to work alone for any predetermined outcome, so something like a payout percentage companion is always required to balance out the entire equation. I may be wrong in what I have said so far, but my +20 years at playing slots may be right at certain points. wink

1 last point to ponder on...some slot games are MORE PREDICTABLE than the rest...and these are the games I usually stick with! smiley

  • Awesome reply wish4wins and i think you nailed it! I think we are both on the same page and in the end the payout percentage has a lot to do with prediction. I have had win upon win on a machine but that is a RARE occurrence and most of the time IF we are lucky we will hit two whopper jackpots.

  • Thank you for your kind words, Lips. Mmmuah! wink
As they say, "wisdom comes with experience"...
But for me, "wins come with experience" is more useful...LOL.
