        Hiya LCB'ers,

Casinos use every trick in the book to lure us. Everything from pumping oxygen into the casino to removing the clocks.

But how about pumping scents through the ventilation system? The theory is that the sense of smell may make gamblers a bit more willing to take a risk.

Macau has taken a keen interest scents to lure their players "Our sense of smell is the only [sense] that circumvents our rational sense of thinking and connects directly to the emotions," Sudhir Kale a marketing consultant for the gaming industry in Macau told local media.

Exactly what scents to use depends on the region and culture. After extensive testing in the US for example the scent of choice is vanilla.

Macau wants to introduce smells that "remind people of their childhood or induce a feeling of safety and security that would be more appropriate for Macau than Las Vegas."

Hirsch's suggested that Jasmine tea and cooked rice would be more suitable for Macau.

Do you think that adding certain smells to casino to lure gamblers into deeper temptation is a good or bad idea?

I don't think it's a good idea - you could lose your shirt because you love the smell of vanilla or jasmine.  The question is though, does it really work?  Now if it was coffee and bacon frying , I would sit there all day.

Interesting that the FDA might approve of this practise.  As far as I know, grocery stores used something similar many years ago.  First, music with subliminal messages were used, then outlawed.  Then experiments with scents were launched and immediately outlawed.

Bring on the coffee and bacon!

I agree Kelowna i am surprised something like this would be approved. It is triggering emotional impulses and those emotions sway our rational decisions.

I am ever more surprised the US would allow it given the whole reason they banned online gambling was for our protection against becoming addicted.........yeah right!!

I think from a practical standpoint this just would not work well in such an environment... think about the smells that are already there... cigarette smoke, food cooking from different restaurants, perfumes, colognes, sweat, spilled alcohol, etc.... Now, add some smell that appeals to some people while others hate it and think it is nauseating  amp; mix all that together and you could have one stanky, stanky mess! For me personally... keep that oxygen coming!
