When it comes to gambling...the intent is to have fun and do not over indulge. But for some it can destroy lives for over indulgence....and there are repercussions.
For some gamblers...they live up to their name "gambler" to the hilt. We have all heard stories of a player losing there life savings...house...and marriage as a result. Some have even taken their own lives. At one of our the local casinos...there is actually two head stones from players who ended it all and jumped over the railing right at the casino.
One of the most disturbing things i hear is people who leave kids in the car for hours on end while they go inside the casino and gamble. Not to mention their dogs............omg!!!!
Makes me wonder if the word gamble really is a GAMBLE for some.......because in the end......its really know gamble at all....your destined to lose.
What do you think is the most shameful act of an addict?
The Shameful acts of a Gambler!
Readers of this topic also read:
- Someone who has a disposition to addiction may pick gambling, or something else. (Porn, drinking, 20 hours a day on the internet, etc.) I think the biggest warning signs one has a problem is the damage to relationships. Problem gamblers are like problem drinkers - the tend to leave a wake of bodies (relationships) behind them.
- I remember an old quote told to me by someone I knew long ago.
"You can only take so many pills, before you pass out or die"
"You can only drink so much till you pass out or die"
"But you can always blow a million cold sober"
Frankly, gambling addiction is probably the WORST addiction of them. After all, like above, you can only do so much till you over do it. And as Lips pointed out, to end your life, you have to actively participate. Yes, drugs and drink can kill, but that's a "Side effect" from excess.
In gambling, you'll do ANYTHING for the next fix.
I've known a very good restaurateur, who had 7 restaurants in CA. He got involved with the "Underworld" of illegal gambling and one day went $30K in the hole. His solution?. He went and robbed (At gunpoint) two banks and got 15 years, paroled in 8.
He destroyed his life, his future and damn near everything for the thrill of massive and high risk betting.
As for shameful act..Wow, I have heard everything form people ripping off family/friends/employers to people pimping their kids out. Murder contracts, kidnapping (48 hours did a section on that) guy kidnapped his sons friend, was going to take the money straight to the casino!! (He got caught before that happened)
I think it's when a person gets up and greets the day with "I wonder where I'll be gambling today?" Or "I've got to get some cash for gambling" is the siren warning of impending danger. We'd best be wary of it sounding off in our lives.
- I've always been a substitute abuser of one kind or another for years..and gambling has definately been my hardest to conquer.
I may never conquer it..it really is my favorite addiction.
I have done some things that I may not be happy with, and some things I may have done differently, but in all honesty, I can say I have never done any "shameful acts"
No offense Lips..but I think this one may be better off for the confessional.
- Lips.. yes seen it all and much worse..
You are absolutley right "destined to lose"..
Gambling is only meant for entertainment, not to be used as an excess
for alot it is a getaway from the troubles in life, you can get your mind off
alot of things in your life, even money troubles..
If it is used for that and only that.. maybe destiny can change for you.
Once you hit that first big jackpot.. you are hooked and welcome
to the world of gambling, that bite of winning bites hard..its a numbing pain
with long lasting ache!
- wow..it felt like you wrote that to me.
gambling has always been more of an escape for me than about the money. try telling that to people who care so much about money. i don't even care about money really. when i am playing, its like the whole world disappears, and all my problems are gone, and time stands still. i'm just in the moment, and everything is feels good at that time.
maybe i should just drinking again, like i said before. you know, i used to write some great poems when i drank imagination turmoil does make a good backdrop!
Every successful gambler know has spent his life winning. They didn’t win because they 're successful gambler. They won because it was the most important thing for them to do to have any satisfaction at all in this world.
When they play slots they won. If they played roulette, they won. But don't think a successful gambler spends his life winning because they are good at everything. They're not, and they know it. They spend their life winning because they concentrate their time and energy on whatever they want to win.
For the successful gambler, the coming day's outcome is never conspicuous. Although casino players knows that they had the best of it, on any given day they can't depend on winning. Every professional gambler, whether they're online blackjack or poker player, a sports bettor, or a horse handicapper, will inevitably have a losing streaks.
If you gamble, some of those losing streaks will be dreaded. Every player, regardless of how skilled they are and how good the playing conditions are, will eventually have a gut-wrenching losing streak. Probably several.
