We all want to pick the winning machine. Sometimes we hear all the talk about the Random Number Generator (RNG) and we feel like when our time comes it comes and there is nothing we can do to help us along the way.
Many players want to play machines with a high percentage payout. I have been to land casinos and have seen pay percentages as high as 99%. My first impulse has been to run to these machines because i can't lose with that kind of percentage.........wrong!!!
High percentage payouts on a slot machine really don't mean a thing in the long run. Let's face it, a casino online or land based is out to win. If they really had slots that paid out 99% back to their players they would be broke in no time.
So what exactly does high percentage payout mean? It basically means that is the percentage a player will back in the long run. Key word "long run". You can sit down at a machine and put in a $20 bill and win $2,000 in a matter of 5 minutes. Slip another $20 bill in another high percentage machine and lose that $2,000 within an hour. Yes in the long run a player will win but how long do you have to play? A player can play for hours on a machine, days on a machine with a high percentage payout and still walk out with empty pockets.
Slot machine Variance
If your looking for a slot that is going to give you a better chance of winning, slot variance is the way to go. Slot machine variance basically means the risk over time on a slot machine.
Low variance slots will give the player longer playing time with lower risk. This might be nice but there is one draw back. The chances of winning big is slim. A high variance slot machine will give a player a better chance of winning big but with less playtime because your taking a bigger risk.
How to determine the slot variance
One way to determine a slot machines variance is to play in fun mode first. After playing for 30 minutes or so observe your credits. If your balance is still around the same amount you started with then chances are this is a low variance machine. You probably hit little wins here and there without hitting a big win. If your credits are depleted quickly or you hit a huge win then this would be considered a high variance machine.
It also important to look at the paytable which is available with any slot you play. What are the win payouts? If 5 scatters pays several hundred more dollars than your bet, this is a pretty good indication that its a high variance machine. If a bonus round has 3 or 4 time multiplier with free spins it too is probably a high variance slot.
If the payouts don't seem that high than chances are you will win more often because it is a low variance slot.
It all depends on what your looking for as a player. If you have a small bankroll and want to have more playtime then the only way to go is low variance. If you want to go for the big one and try to land that jackpot......high variance.
What to look for when playing slots.
