    British gambling giant William Hill will enter the Italian market as they plan to launch an online casino there at the end of this month. This will be followed by an online bingo site, a sportsbook site and a poker room.

    The market there is huge, Italy is one of Europe's largest countries with a population of 60 million and the Italians like gambling a lot.  At the moment the Italian market is estimated to be worth 6 billion Euro but it's growing constantly.

    I think that the laws didn't allow them to enter until now. From what I understand Italy is now wide open to online gambling and many casinos and are jumping at the opportunity.

    I believe the laws used to forbid cash games, so Italians introduced another measure which regulated the pastime, opened up the market, so everyone can get a piece of the EUR6 billion market. smiley

    Yeah, I believe the state had a strong hold on gambling, and banned all foreign competition by its criminal law. I think they were kinda forced by the ECJ to lift the ban, as criminal law cannot really be used to ban competition licensed in other EU countries due to the EU trade agreements. So now the government finally realized the taxation potential for the industry, so it opened up the cash games market.
