  • This is a dream come true and a feel good kind of story that good heart people still extend a helping hand to a stranger..........

A waiter in a Houston restaurant lost his his car due to bad storm and had to take a bus or cabs to work everyday.

A couple and regulars at the restaurant caught wind of his story and handed him an envelope with $5,000 cash in it to buy a new car!

The two generous tippers who prefer to remain anonymous said they will continue to come in but he won't receive another tip for awhile!

If you ever became filthy rich would you be inclined to do acts of kindness like this?

    Lips

  • I would love to be that rich to can afford that kind of kindness everyday Lips

  • Me too!!  I would love to help the less fortunate.  Sad to say but im at the lower end of the money scale.  Maybe i'll win the lottery some day...yea right laugh_out_loud

  • That's such a sweet story. The 5 grand must me chump change to them to give it so freely to someone. I would help my family and those close to me first then if I was filthy rich help someone whose situation touched me.

  • What a lovely story.

I would love to be a secret millionaire and help people out like they do in the TV show...but I definitely would not do it on TV!  I prefer to go about being generous "quietly" a bit like the couple in your story Lips.

  • It's a good thing they gave it as a gift. Had it been the actual tip, there's 8% deduction on that for Feds!

  • I would love to have extra cash to help others out.  Maybe one day I will hit it big.  Hopefully the money won't turn me into an ahole

  • The way I think, this is the way how kindness should be expressed these days. Various fondations and charity organizations look somewhat shaddy to me, thats why i prefer direct acts of kindness, kinda ensures I helped the way I intended to cheesy

  • I agree Drtheolen, if you give money to people who come begging for it at your doorstep you never know where the money gonna be ended up..................

If you wanna make a change, you gotta do it yourself, and this was a great example of it, maybe a little bit gushy, cause when at my first reply when i said if i was filty rich i would love to help everybody. i now correct myself, i do would want to know where that person is coming from and for what reason she/he would need that money.

Cause if you never ask for no reason at all, you won't be filty rich for that long.............right????

  • Really nice story and it was a really nice gesture from them. Right now I do believe that I would help the people in need but you never know until you're in that situation. I'm sure millions of reasons might appear against helping others. I just think that money has a strange influence on people. And I don't want to waste my time talking about fake charities - it's one of many influences.

  • it was a very nice gesture, i hope the guy follows through and gets the car.  I have talked to people who were at intersections with the sign "will work for food"  and offered them employment.  they all, (on 3 different times, 3 different people)  looked at me like I was out of my mind and either turned away or just asked for cash.....i was pissed off and wanted to kick their asses for being crack head liars...that is what can be bad about trying to be helpful sometimes.....you just dont know for sure if you are helping or hurting.......these individuals did not want food..they wanted drugs and alcohol but how can you know?  very frustrating,  especially if you would like to help someone like that

  • Wonderful story Lips! When I think about "What if I had lots of money?" I first think of the things I would do because I need them, the things I would do for family and close friends who need them, then help people with needs I can see, trust, and help directly without any fanfare or publicity about it.

Even with a little money those are my priorities now. The local homeless missions and foodbanks will sometimes appeal to the community for help and while they will of course accept cash, they also accept the actual things that are needed then and there for immediate distribution to those they help. Coats, warm clothes, bedding, sleeping bags, and of course food. And also help with meal prep and serving on holidays when they need the extra help. Or passing out the donated toys to the children at Christmas.

Or we buy school supplies, clothes, soap, toothbrushes, etc for a certain school serving Lakota Indian children in South Dakota and send care packages direct to the school. These are things I trust are actually getting to those that need them and not going into the pockets of major charities that spend the bulk of the donations to run the charity and only a fraction actually goes to those in need.

  • Excellent, this story made my day! I guess I would do something like this if I had a lot of money. But I don't have smiley

We have those people on street corners.  I have literally seen some done for the day and go around the corner, get into their decked out SUV and drive off.

Those kind of people really hurt those who are really in need.
  • If I was that rich enough ? Sure why not wink

  • Great story Lips!!
I'd like to believe I'd do the same if I had the money to do it with.As it stands I do donate to our local womens' shelter, food pantry and I donate once a year when our mailmen collect non-perishable food items.
This is somewhat in the same topic realm...a few years ago,a homeless guy was looking for a cigarette on the sidewalk...which i hate to see so I offered him one.He refused and I then put one down on the sidewalk, which he then picked up.
I guess he was thinking that way he wasn't begging or taking a hit to his already deminished self respect. smiley

Where I live they have passed an ordinance regarding the people on street corners... they must have a permit and stand only on their assigned corner because they were becoming a traffic hazard... go figure.
