I've always heard that phrase from people..or when times are bad I hear "At least you've got your health".

Well, as a smoker for the past 23 1/2 years, I should consider myself lucky not have run into any respiratory problems. But.....

It's been 3 weeks as of today that I started with this dry cough at first. Nothing else, just a chronic cough. Then after a week or so, the cough became productive (yellowish in color) for a few days. For the past week and a half, the sputum is now clear and sticky.

When I say chronic cough, I mean CHRONIC kick-a*s cough. It happens several times a day---worse at night--keeping me awake.

It's to the point now that I cannot stop coughing until my body does this "involuntary sneeze" which is when the clear phlegm comes up. The coughs are violent, causing my body to hurt. The other day, I noticed very little bit of streak of blood in the mucus.

        it's bad.

I've been putting off the doctor because I was busy with my 2 boys here with me for the summer. But now they went back to their Dad, and I have my doctors appt. in 2 1/2 hours.

Has anyone else experienced this? I want to ask my doctor to take an xray and do a lung cancer screening but I don't want to sound like a hypocondriact.
        Somebody talk to me!

It could be anything.  I cough the worst if oak pollen is falling in the air around me, or if pigweed is blooming.  Or when it rains and the mold starts spiking.
They told me I have asthma a long time ago.  I used to smoke tobacco, but eventually just couldn't take it. The thing with asthma cough, it will be pretty dry, but it kind of whips air into your phlegm or any post nasal drip you may not have noticed so the best thing to do is get it coughed out or it will fill your throat with liquid that is so full of tiny airbubbles you start not being able to breath well and will eventually have that kind of violent explosion of a cough that you mention-almost like throwing up from the lungs.  And it will be thick-but full of tiny tiny bubbles. The tiny amount of blood could just be from your throat or esophagus.

My dad died of lung cancer, but coughing was not really one of his symptoms-his spread to other areas and caused other symptoms first.

A good listen to your breath sounds will help your dr. diagnose your immediate symptoms, and an xray is a reasonable expectation. as will be blood work, etc.  You're doing the right thing and start taking care of your lungs because breathing is a nice thing to be able to do.  You could have even developed an allergy to cigarette smoke.  When I'm around too much of it I get the coughing and my eyes dry out and then leak water, pretty soon I just gotta get some fresh air.
Try to just stay calm, positive mental attitude.  If the news is bad be glad it's not 20-30 years ago in the medical system and follow up.  Cutting down on the smokes or quitting is easier when you can't breath when you smoke, or when the alternative is no breathing at all....

Sorry you are going through this-take a hot shower and breath in the steamy air then go see your doctor. That was good that you made your appointment and get to go!

        Thanks Chill...

Your post was very helpful and educational, ty.

" because breathing is a nice thing to be able to do " lol...always took it for granted until a time like now where it's difficult to breath when coughing.

I think I've asked my husband at least once a day for the past week "Am I dying?" lol

I'm sure I will be on a bit later again after my appointment (which I rescheduled 5 times in the past 2 weeks!) to post an update.

        Thanks for your reply

Hi Acgofer, please please go to the Dr. Asap,if you don't have medical still go to the nearest hospital emergency room, but seek some type of tretment asap!! You could have a bad case of "smokers cough" or maybe bronchitis but whatever it is your body is asking for help. About 10 years ago my life changed drastically, I took for granted that I had been reasonably healthy most of my life and kept putting off going to see about myself at a time when I was very stressed out and not feeling well, I assumed I didnt feel well because of the stress, until finally my body started to react in horrible ways because I was ignoring my own health.I finally went to emergency when I would wake up several times during the night feelin as if I was smothering in my sleep,I mean feeling as if spmeone was holding a pillow over my face and cutting off my air. When I finally got waited on in the ER I knew something was wrong after they took x-rays and had me wait for a pulmonologist, she told me there were spots on my lungs and that I needed a lot of tests and it could be cancer.I was a smoker and felt like a ton of brinks had been dropped on me! I was lucky (this is an attempt at sarcasm) I found out after getting sicker and sicker that I have a disease called Sarcoidosis and that I had fluid in my lungs and in my heart,I had to be hospitalized several times and almost lost my legs due to circulation issues, I  was on a walker for 6 months, I was on oxygen,my mom had to help me bathe,I lost my condo and a lot of material things. Finally found the RIGHT Doctor and eventually, slowly got better,I still have problems from the didease but it could have been a lot worse.I ALMOST DIED! Never ever take your health for granted...so yes it is true if you have your health you have everything, at least it is for me. Please see about yourself!

Well, 1st Thank you everyone for your replies and kind words....
I could have saved a couple hours, and my $10 co-pay just by asking you guys! lol..

It in fact IS bronchitis, with, she (Dr.) thinks, a touch of Pneumonia.

I was given an inhaler, antibiotics, and need to get chest xrays next week..just to be sure there's nothing else goin on in there.

Hopefully the antibiotics will clear me up within a week...if not, I need to see her again she says.
Ah well, my advice to you all....DON'T SMOKE!!!!!!!!!!!  >:(

I would have told you bronchitis with just the symptoms of when you say that it is "worse when you lie down", that is an ultimate symptom of bronchitis.. but be careful bronchitis can easily turn to pnuemonia and very quickly (my mother suffered with it constantly she was a non smoker).

I'm so glad to see you went to the doctor and took care of it, you'll soon be all better, and i bet you are relieved to know that it being only bronchitis still being something very serious, but less serious then say cancer or anything else as serious you can relax somewhat and heal! Those worries can really do us in sometimes.

Ok seriously, everything has been going bad lately for us over here...and now I can't see out of my left eye, only shadows, weird. I have to go to the DR. on wednesday, who will just refer me to an eye specialist most likely...

I don't know why, I just woke up from my nap, and it was super blurry, then it went to even more blurry and halos around everything, and this morning, just shadows...no pain, no swelling, no infection...

Anyways, I will keep you guys posted..

It really doesn't matter how you sound to anyone.  What matters hear is you have legit concerns about your current state of health.  Go talk to your doctor already!  If anything, your doc will commend you for being proactive in your own health and well-being.  If your doc makes you feel like you're a hypochondriac, have them kiss your ass and take all of their mints at the front desk as you walk out.

Mommy it sounds like you could be suffering from migraines that can cause the "blind spots". Sometimes that can happen without a major headache at all. The first time it happened to me i swore i was going blind! It scared the living day lights out of me!
