About 13 years ago a prominent older man was checking out of his hotel room with an ethnic young lady (she looked about 14 or 15).  She barely knew a word of English but it was obvious they shared a room together.

Despite the child protection laws, because the man was prominent (and rich apparently) no one said a word about it.  What would you do?

since I'm seeing them check out, I assume I am somewhere in the hotel lobby along with them.  I'd probably at very least say something to the hotel clerk.  If a hotel security person was there, I'd say something to them.  If I happened to be outside and able to get a license plate, I'd probably report the incident and license number to Child Protective Services.  If I had a camera or camera phone, I'd take pictures.  I'd also maybe glare at the guy with daggers shooting out of my eyes and maybe even verbally confront the person, depending on the situation.  And probably none of that would help at all or it would turn out they had a legit reason for being together.  But that wouldn't stop me from doing *something* to make sure the girl was safe.  I woulda talked to her if I thought she could understand me.

        Hi Joseph,

A perfect example of that is Jerry Lee Lewis who married his 13 year old cousin. At the time the world was in an uproar and it ruined his career temporarily. But he soon came back and sold millions of records.

If the man is prominent and has loads of money, i may think i am powerless. But considering the news media and how they would eat up that kind of story my voice may be very effective to blow the whistle on him.

Either way without a doubt, i don't think it would be in my nature to sit back.

Perhaps this girl is his adoptive daughter from another country?  This is more common than men who molest young famales.  You assume he is a pervert.  But, the odds (good term to use on a gambling web site)  are more likey it is his daughter by adoption.

Had you made the mistake of assuming he is a pervert, and assuming this man is prominent, then he'd probably sue you back to the Stone Age for making a false claim.

In all fairness, Doc is right.  Senator John McCain has an adopted daughter from another country (that unfortunately became the topic of a smear campaign a few years back.)

There's more to the story.  I did ask the older man who his companion was: "Is that your cousin, sir?"  He replied, "...yeah, cousin, that's right..heh heh" with a mischievous grin.

OK, so I missed the last comment on this by JK. Please next time include all facts hey?

Unless I had a camera and such I'd probably not do anything as most likely the female would deny involvement (sexually) and of course so would he.

calling the cops would be a waste of time in any case unless you had pictures of them naked/semi-naked and possibly in compromising positions (Which would be illegal for you to get without permission) so most likely, nothing would be done.

To be honest i was about to say when i posted here, who is to say it is what it looks like and how can i assume such a horrific act when i don't have all the facts. You did really good on posing this question. And doc passed with flying colors on the answer!

I think the question was very well put and it teaches us a lesson not to pre-judge. Excellent example of how quick we are to assume!

hey, I also said it would probably turn out to be innocent, and didn't say I'd call a cop, and that I'd take a picture if I could, and I might make a report, not an accusation, just so someone could check it out.

But let me tell you a true story.  When Jake was little, the family (his real dad died in Vietnam 3 months before he was born) lived in Korea, and his parents adopted a young Korean girl.  Imagine how happy he was to have a little sister.  And then imagine how twisted his mind became finding out his step-dad only adopted the girl so he could have sex with her!  The step-dad is long dead, and the girl is now married to her uncle.  And Jake, well, he wanders the streets getting toasted all day, and sleeps in the ds and has trouble with relationships.

Again, we assume the man is a pervert.  I have an adoptive daughter from another country.  If someone even started taking pictures of her (see comments from above) I'd call the police on him/her.

We wrongly assume the few horror stories we know are the norm.  Evidence, folks....evidence!

Was thinking the same thing when I read the initial question.  I wouldn't jump to a poor conclusion.

Yesterday, my 10 year old son told me his classmates mom is 26.  She was pregnant at 15.  More troubling is, her husband, the dad, is 32.

So.... she got pregnant at 15 by a 21 year old.  I bit my tongue not to tell my son what they did was illegal.

Guys, you're missing one important detail.  He/She who is commiting the crime is prominent/wealthy.  Think about the priests who molest young boys.  The man I was servicing at the time at the hotel checkout was finely dressed (Maybe Armani suit).  He may have rented a high dollar room (every consideration possible).  At a risk to a loss of a lot of business, would someone blow the whistle on this man?

I got that point.  Perhaps a better scenario would give us a chance to say 'yes' we would blow the whistle.  Your scenario tells nothing, too many other options instead of him banging a young girl.

If you asked "If you saw a prominent/wealthy man slip a drug to an underage gal and take her to his room"... the answer would be, yes, I would tell no matter the consequences for myself.

Even if he admitted to it, Gabby? Don't forget this part...

        Missed that part, sorry.

I don't know what I would do, if anything, unless I was in the situation.  Funny answer for me since I always know what I would do when I watch "What would you do?" on Dateline

        Forgot to add:

If in the situation, I would not have asked if she were his cousin.  I would have suspected she was not and it would appear I was making a joke out of it or giving him an out.
