  • Hi Guys and Dolls,

We all recall certain major events in our lives. Ask a family member where they were when the Twin Towers were hit, the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded, when Elvis died, when Kennedy got shot or the bombing on Pearl Harbor and they will know. People remember the precise moment with such precison that we know where we were, who we were with and even what we wore that day.

But this is a senitmental journey of a different kind. It is our own personal life recall. I have been on a senitmental journey for the last few days. The slightest thing will jar my memory and I go way back. It is funny how we recall certain moments in our lives. At the time it seems so meaningless. But somewhere in the recesses of our minds we hold on to it.

I heard the whistle of a train on the track last night and it triggered the memory of being no more than 4 years old. We use to live a block from train track and I recalled a night of playing outside til way after dark, something that was a rarity for me.  Mom and dad sat on the front steps as I played. I then had to go in, take a bath and go to bed. I was so mad!! As I lay in bed with the window open, I could hear the older kids still playing outside. I also heard that whistle of the train.

The other day I heard a bell. Instantly my thoughts went back to standing in front of the ice cream truck asking for my favorite ice cream only to be told…”sold out”!

I have heard many trains and many bells, but why it brought me to childhood memories now is anybodies guess.

Sometimes we don’t need a trigger for memories of things that seem to have no purpose at all. They are like snaps shots in our minds of faded photographs.

Do you remember things that at the time seemed so trivial, you ask yourself why do I remember it all?

  • Hi all...Hmm? Sentimental Journey? Wow, there has been many!

A couple of yrs. ago, I moved into a very small community town to get away from the hustle of the big city life. I wanted peace and quiet. I remember as the days and months went by how so peaceful and quiet it had become for me. As a matter of fact, there was too much quietness for me.

One evening, I decided to go to bed early, since of course, I had basically, sold my soul for nothing more than saving myself from sanity and the drama that went along with living in NYC. Later that evening I was awoken from my neighbors across the street.  I really tried to ignore the screaming I was hearing but it continued for quite some time. "He said .... she screamed....he screamed back" and it continued, nonstop!

Oh my gosh, the cursing that I heard and the screaming had became uncontrollable and  louder!  Soon, I heard the police siren, not one police car but three came speeding up to my neighbors house.  Of course, the "man" had to show his woman that he was not going to put up with any police telling him what he needed to do, so of course, he decided to show he was "he-man" and swung at one of the officers!  shocked  Quick as lightening, the officers grabbed him and threw him against the car and handcuffed my neighbor.

Ahhh, yes! Sentimental Journey!  cool  I started to think of NYC and smiled. "Yep!" I thought.."And here I thought, I missed my home state!"  wink  cheesy  I yawned, shook my head and smiled as I went back to bed.:-*

  • Love that story slot!!! Some memories no matter how bad they seem at the time can later bring us comfort.

I remember going out to the country when i was a kid and i hated it. You couldn't find a house for miles. The only thing to play with was a tire that was hanging from a tree. Today i remember it fondly and would love nothing more then to live there.

  • Bells do that for me, they always remind me of childhood, especially the memory of when i was little watching that movie, "It's a Wonderful Life"

  • It has to be one of the greatest classics of all time imagin. What a wonder life it would be if every time we heard a bell an angel got their wings!

  • I have this happen ALL the time.  Just yesterday I was beseiged with different snapshots of when I was younger.  I think I am, because of my recent disease and upcoming changes I am planning, on a longterm sentimental journey.  I am not saying it will end, but I think when I get where I am going, it will be less.  It's sort of like, when you open that door of taking the time to pay attention, you invite those senses and memories.

    Thanks for sharing Lips:)

  • That was beautiful and well said Toodle..

  • Theres another thing i remember, whenever i smell popcorn it reminds me of Sears.. when we were little there was a Sears store my parents shopped at, they had a popcorn carasol cart and would sell popcorn, i still remember seeing small bits of popcorn in the store and striped bags crumpled here and there it's not just an any kind popcorn smell.. they just had a peticular kind or smell to it..

  • Ok in the sense of physical things bringing up memories.... if I hear a spoon clanging against the sides of a coffee cup early in the morning it reminds me of waking up at my grandparents house when I was very little.  It has to be the right kind of cup to get the right sound of clang, but if it happens I am immediately taken back to being 3 or 4 years old waking up in the sleeping bag and the first sounds I hear are my grandma and grandpa at the table stirring their morning coffee silently.

  • Toodle that is a very sweet memory.. and it's ironic because i know that sound it has the same memory for me.. the clangical stir and smell of the coffee, the ruffle of the newspaper.. the smell of pancakes on sunday morning! GRAMMAAAAAAA

  • Exactly Imagin, isn't it funny how some very basic common things become our precious memories smiley

  • What is funny about these triggers is that at the time they seem so meaningless. But later when remembered it is a very warm memory.

One not so fond memory happened a couple weeks ago. Went out for lunch at a Italian restaurant. When we first got there i thought it was an adorable quaint little place. I even commented on how homey it felt.

As i began to sit there i started to feel uneasy. I started to have visions of a funeral home. I couldn't shake the feeling. I couldn't understand why. I began to panic thinking i was having a premonition. I suddenly realize it was the smell in this place. It reminded me of a funeral home!

I never realized a funeral home had a smell other than flowers til that day. I turned to my sis and asked her........ do you smell a funny odor? She thought for a minute and she said it smelled like formaldehyde. I was like ............omg embalming fluid!

Needless to say we got out of there fast! I also don't like the smell of certain flowers, mainly lilies. I think of a funeral home every time i smell them.
