Hi Guys and Dolls,
I read this news article and it touched me so much. It's a tragic story of rare bravery....
Being called a hero can sometimes be used too loosely. But for Maria Santos Gorrostieta, she is considered the “heroine of the 21st century”, a title she so rightfully deserves.
Maria was the mayor of the small town of Tiquicheo, Mexico and was not afraid to stand up to the drug cartels. Her husband was shot and killed two years ago and she herself a victim of two violent crimes by the drug gangs including 30 bullets to her body and battle scars to prove it.
On November 12th she was dropping her daughter off to school when gunmen pulled in front of her car. Maria pleaded not to hurt her daughter as she willing got into their car. She was missing for 8 days and when her body was found, half-nude, tortured, mutilated and burned on a rural road in the state of Michoacán,
The wrath began when she spoke out against the drug cartels and in a previous statement said:
“Despite my own safety and that of my family, what occupies my mind is my responsibility toward my people, the children, the women, the elderly and the men who break their souls every day without rest to find a piece of bread for their children,”
“I wanted to show you my wounded, mutilated body because I’m not ashamed of it. It’s living testimony that I am a strong and righteous woman, and despite my wounds, I’m still on my feet.”
She is survived by her daughter and two sons and husband, who she married two years after her first was killed,
A True Hero....
