I'm pretty sure some here have laptops which they may have gotten used.

I was wondering what I should look for (And look OUT for) when considering a purchase. Nope, I cannot afford new, having to save every dime I can right now but the laptop will be very needed.

I'll be making sure I have a wireless card (So many people don't protect their routers!) and basic OS. But any advice on how it should be and what I could expect?

I'll be spending $175-$200 for it.

        Hey gene,
my advice would be to go to ebay and check out what they have there. The Laptop I just bought was $250 brand new, but I got lucky and caught walmart on an after christmas sale. Are you lookin for anything particular or just something to say for instance play casino games on?

Well, looking for enough power to play and graphics also so the games show nicely. I will admit, I am too low on price having done a bit of searching I think $250-$300 is better.

I have seen amazon refurbished from $223 up and the computer they're offering at Dell Lattitudes which I have heard are quite good.

I'm just not too keen on buying of Craigslist.

I guess it's just I have never had one and you know (Or might) know how it is having one and scared you'll destroy it accidently

Geneco, you might also try some local computer shops in your area, if there are any. I don't know where you live but there were a handful in my area when I was looking for one and it's not a real big city. I found one for $200, which was serving me well even though I had accidentally cracked the screen - until it got stolen out of my apartment. Now I'm in your boat again.

Be sure to ask about the battery; how long it lasts, how old it is, etc. Those things are a real weak link in used laptops, at least for the price range your talking about. They've gotten better now, but in the older used ones you'll be lucky if it can hold out for an hour or two. And it will almost certainly not be warrantied (nor will the adaptor), even if you can manage to get a used laptop w/a brief warranty (mine was only 30 days). You might want to invest in an extension cord too since it probably won't be long before it goes out completely - and you'll pay about half of what the laptop cost to get a replacement. You can't just keep a spare on hand either because those batteries have a finite lifespan whether they're being used or not.

        Good luck.

We have a store always advertising on local TV called Mr Computer.  They refurbish computers.  At Christmas they had a buy a laptop for $99 get a free PC sale going on.  These were all nice packages, but I'm sure you could pay more for more features.  Have you got any stores around your area that "recycle" and sell used computers?  We also have a goodwill computer store, with items from parts to complete ultra cool sets with all bells and whistles.

Yes Chilly, that's an idea. I do loathe dealing with GW (Just their attitudes and what they have tried to sell to the public, like a broken bicycle helemt!) but the recycle idea is a good one and there is a recycle group nearby. Thanks for the idea.

Bradwill, thanks for the advice on the battery. I always thought they were like the dry cell batteries that (treated right) stayed good for quite awhile. Thanks for letting me know different!

Check Dell Factory Outlet website for refubished laptops.  Not sure of the prices but I know they do them.

Tim that's one thing I have wondered. What's the difference between a laptop and netbook? I haven't looked at them, so thought they were like a small notebook or such, but have heard of them.

Notebooks are more powerful, bigger, and used for more things. Netbooks are smaller and used primarily for internet. If you are going to use the laptop for , for example the topic of this forum , online casinos, a netbook may work just fine for you. The real differences between the two are the internal boards and processors. A refurbished notebook may be an option too. Sometimes you can get one with a short warranty. If you plan to do more online gaming than just casinos then this would be the way to go then. For that budget even a new laptop, you have to remember that most are usually going to cost you more eventually for things like anti virus programs and other programs. Another option you have is a local pc repair shop , although with the economies the way they have been , i am wary of buying from a pc shop, simply because the owner is trying to make a buck the cheapest way he can.

I would probably try and save a few more bucks to buy a new one.  I tend to shy away from used computer stuff.

We have 4 of these from Best Buy and they work great for our needs.

        New! Toshiba - Satellite Laptop / AMD E-Series Processor / 15.6" Display / 3GB Memory / 320GB Hard Drive - Black
        Model: C655D-S5126 | SKU: 1880037
$349.99 - Regular/not sale price.  They do go on sale for at least $50 off.

That is a very wise and true point brought up, there is simply no comparison to a new pc of any type. If you can get together a couple hundred more somehow or be able to save for that, you will be happy you did i'm quite certain.

Yes, you are quite right. Used can be great or God-awful when you get to it.

I do have the ability to buy new (Just got refund $ IRS) and am looking at just what I want. I will want the wifi as I'll probably need to go back to snagging free wifi. I watch to watch DVDs and "Maybe" play online casinos (If permits) I'm not into those role playing games or shoot them ups.

So I guess that the Toshiba sounds like the way to go.

Thanks for the advice all. It's been great.
