  • Event Data Recorders will be mandatory in all cars by 2015

Black boxes are already installed in over 90-percent of vehicles and track data like speed, braking, airbag deployment and some even know the vehicle's location. I did not know that something like this was even present in my car when I purchased it. I did not know that this so called black box even existed in vehicles untill today .  Today I had read that the Senate Commerce Committee has granted bipartisan approval to legislation that aims to protect the information on automotive Event Data Recorders (EDR), also known as black boxes. The committee concluded that the vehicle owner is the one who owns the information stored on the device.

The information can still be accessed if authorized by a court or if the owner consents. Had I would of known about this "EDR" that came with the vehicle when I bought it,  I would have requested it not to be installed.  But the option was never made available to me. The fact that a device like this was installed onto vehicles without the publics knowledge was wrong !  It was then, and still is an invasion of privacy to all of us. !  Now,  can I ask if there is someone has any knowledge of how to uninstall or disable this device "EVENT DATA RECORDER"  (EDR) ,  will you please let us know. ?
                                        sincerely,

  • If you can find it, I'm sure you can just unplug it and yes I agree it's an invasion of privacy.

What make of car is it?

  • wait till they start implanting chips under our skin cheesy

  • wait till they start implanting chips under our skin cheesy

You could be right.  They do it with dogs....humans next.
  • I've never heard before about black boxes for cars. That is an invasion of privacy, and they should have told you about it when you were buying a car. I hope you can disable it. Perhaps you could go and ask the car dealer, where you bought the car.

  • All i can do is shake my head. I am not surprised and nothing will shock me when it comes to the Government and what they are capable of.

its oredy been done on humans...

demi moore and bruce willis had chips implanted in their kids just in case they got kidnapped..

they are just one of few wealthy/famous ppl who have used this
  • these event data recorders are mandated on all cars made from 2001 on.

Congress made it illegal for a dealership to disconnect or remove these devices. However, owners may still disable or remove them.

Vetronix (Bosch) makes software to read the data recorder and published a list of locations of the event data recorders in various cars

wot make and model is ur car  Diane1967Fl huh

  • My husband told me that they can keep track of the tag on your car and be able to tell where you go by placing devices that read your tag at various locations. also  that now they have a chip that is in medication  that you  take that will track you ,it's suppose to be digestible and after a while excuse me for saying you poop out.  Really !  OMG now that's funny... I guess with that chip or "location device " If it is in one place for to long then they would know that's where you had to go see a man about a dog !    lol....  But all kidding aside .. I guess our rights to anything is being not slowly quickly diminishing isn't it ?

  • Tweeksta , I have a 2004 Ford Mustang V-8 40th Anniversary addition .

  • When I purchased my car, I paid in full and have the title to my Mustang.  I wasn't given the option to have this device installed or uninstalled. I was not informed at all about the "EDR"  Event Data Recorder.  >:(

  • Scary, who knows what they will do next!

  • I can't find anything about the location in your car of this EDR.  There is a site listing loads of other cars and where the EDR can be found but sadly not your car.

  • Really .... that's interesting and disturbing Blueday !

  • It is an invasion of our privacy, but what can we do? The government, no matter where you live seems to think, or they can overpower us individuals. One great thing about the black box is that the older vehicles like the 1980s and so on are not ran on computers etc, so if you have an older vehicle hold on to it lol.

@Zuga, yes the day is coming very near for the chips to be implanted into our skin and when this day arrives, may God help us all. smiley

  • Hah, they can't find the lost boeing, but wan't to spy people cars cheesy good luck government

  • Good point Armage !

  •               Man,  that's some scary s***, ya'll.  I never heard of that.  Y'know  I love technology,  computers and all that but I have to say the 50's  sounds like it would've been a nice time to live .  No cell phones,
limited paranoia,  strong middle class,  opportunities,  arrrrgh........don't get Bongo started  laugh_out_loud
