A drunk man in an Oldsmobile

They said had run the light

    That caused the six-car pileup

    On 109 that night..

    When broken bodies lay about

    'And blood was everywhere,'

    'The sirens screamed out eulogies,'

For death was in the air.

'A mother, trapped inside her car,'

    Was heard above the noise;

Her plaintive plea near split the air:

'Oh, God, please spare my boys!'

She fought to loose her pinned hands

    'She struggled to get free,'

But mangled metal held her fast

    In grim captivity.

    Her frightened eyes then focused

'On where the back seat once had been,'

But all she saw was broken glass and

    Two children's seats crushed in.

    Her twins were nowhere to be seen;

'She did not hear them cry, '

'And then she prayed they'd been thrown free, '

'Oh, God, don't let them die! '

Then firemen came and cut her loose, '

'But when they searched the back, '

'They found therein no little boys, '

But the seat belts were intact

They thought the woman had gone mad

    'And was traveling alone, '

'But when they turned to question her, '

    They discovered she was gone.

    Policemen saw her running wild

    And screaming above the noise

    'In beseeching supplication, '

Please help me find my boys!

    They're four years old and wear blue shirts;

'Their jeans are blue to match''

'One cop spoke up, ''They're in my car, '

And they don't have a scratch.

They said their daddy put them there

'And gave them each a cone, '

Then told them both to wait for Mom

To come and take them home.

'I've searched the area high and low, '

But I can't find their dad.

'He must have fled the scene, '

'I guess, and that is very bad'

'The mother hugged the twins and said, '

'While wiping at a tear, '

'He could not flee the scene, you see, '

'For he's been dead a year.'

'The cop just looked confused and asked, '

'Now, how can that be true? '

'The boys said, ''Mommy, Daddy came

'And left a kiss for you.'' '

He told us not to worry

'And that you would be all right, '

And then he put us in this car with

    'The pretty, flashing light. '

'We wanted him to stay with us, '

'Because we miss him so, '

'But Mommy, he just hugged us tight '

And said he had to go.

    He said someday we'd understand

'And told us not to fuss, '

'And he said to tell you, Mommy, '

    'He's watching over us.'

The mother knew without a doubt

'That what they spoke was true, '

'For she recalled their dad's last words, '

' I will watch over you.'

The fire men's notes could not explain

    'The twisted, mangled car, '

And how the three of them escaped

    Without a single scar.

'But on the cop's report was scribed, '

'In print so very fine, '

An angel walked the beat tonight on Highway 109..

  • Nice poem, but I sure don't believe angels watch over us......I would consider myself actively religious, too.  Where were the "angels" for the 20 million children killed in Dar Fur?

  • Hi Mommy,

I do believe in angels. Without a doubt.......at least it soothes my soul and brings me comfort.

Will tell ya story that happened to me a couple years ago.......

It was a Sunday afternoon and me and mom decided to head for Harrah's Casino. It is about a 45 min ride which is straight highway. I was driving and doing about 80 miles per hour the entire way. This stretch of highway is not easy terrain. It is heavily used with lots of connecting highways underneath and above us that wind and bend.

I got off at the exit and still had about 20 min or so before we got to the casino. This stretch of road was 40 miles an hour with two lanes for traffic each way. Just minutes from Harrah's i reach an underpass that slows down to one lane. Just before reaching the underpass there is some construction so i slow down to about 20 miles an hour.

Just as i got under the viaduct i lost complete control of my steering wheel. I had absolutely no steering what so ever. The car veered right as i hit the underpass wall. My mom nor me got hurt because i was going so slow.

The mechanic said that the bolt that holds down the arm of the steering wheel became disengaged. A few weeks early the car was brought to the mechanic for repairs......he never screwed in the bolt for the arm.

So many times i have said......there had to be an angel watching us..because by all rights we should be dead. Had that happened on the highway at 80 miles an hour.......i shutter to think where we would be now.

The fact that we were spared and it happened when it did.....was the work of a higher power.

  • Amen Lips, what a story...I am so glad it didn't happen at 80MPH..That would be tragic.

I too believe in angels, it warms my heart and comforts my soul to believe that there is someone watching over me and my family. Whether it be my mother or my father, or a complete stranger.

I think it is easier for some people to believe they don't exist. I don't know. Just my opinion of course.

I hope when it is my time to go, I will be someones angel, and watch over them.

  • Wow Lips I would have never gotten the oppertunity to be your friend and that wuld have been awful. Thank God and Praise Him for saving you and your Mom.

  • Great poem, I do believe angels watch over us. My Dad is my angel. I almost lost my daughter a year ago in a really bad crash, if you could see the pictures of her car you would wonder how she ever survived but she did. She spent three weeks in the trauma unit and today she is back at work. I have no doubt her Grandpa was with her, and to this day I love the song by Carrie Underwood, Jesus Take The Wheel. When I saw her car the first thought I had was God was in the seat, and Jesus took the Wheel. Her seat was completely turned sideways and if it had not been she would have been crushed because the dash of the car was laying where she would have been sitting otherwise. She did suffer some pretty severe leg injuries but it could have been alot worse. She was hit by a truck which caused her car to spin, flip , and collide into a guard rail. I am very grateful she survived. So I do believe in angel.

  • What a beautiful poem and an amazing story. I too, also believe that angels from a higher source watch over us. It's stories like those that strengthen my beliefs. Thanks!

  • These are certainly heart warming stories.  And I would certainly praise God when anyone is saved from a potential disaster.

However, what about the 30,000 people last year in the USA who were killed on the highways and roads?  Where was their angel?  Does this mean angles employ artibrary decisions as to who lives and dies?

  • My opinion:  God cannot be blamed for man's shortcomings or bad decisions. Sometimes good people get hurt and die. That is the way of the world. I do think heavenly intervention does happen on occasion and it is wonderful when it does. This world is full of horrible people and horrible acts (like Darfur). That is why we must hold on to those times when miracles do happen. God's will, someone once said, is what we would choose if we knew the whole story. I once HATED God with all that is in me and sometimes we still butt heads, but I now realize that the things I want are always for the best and maybe it is better that all prayers aren't answered. IDK, but anyway around it, I still don't think children should ever have to suffer. That one is hard to understand.

    Hi Deb,

I read your story and i got chills. It is stories like these that make me confident in intervention. The fact that the seat was turned is a miracle in itself, must less the fact she is walking and working today!

I guess her work here on earth is not done and someone upstairs said we are not quite ready for ya yet.

Thanks for sharing such a intimate story with us. I know your one happy mom and you brought a smile on my face this morn!

I'm not sure where there angels were, and no I don't believe they make the decision who lives and who dies. When my Dad was ill and right before he died he told me, don't let them take me yet and I thought he meant the nurses that came to take him back to intensive care and I told him they would take good care of him in the unit, he looked at me and said , no not the nurses the angels, I don't want to go yet. I was very angry when he died but I came to my own understanding and acceptance. With my daughter, I think it wasn't her time to go, and she still had much to do here. I'm not saying what she does is more important, but to me she is an angel. She is a hospice nurse and loves her job, she had just left a patient when she had her accident. Maybe my beliefs are a little out there to some but it is how I believe. Alot of good people die and I don't know why, my Dad was one of those people but I know it must have been his time. He was young only 52, but in alot of pain and very ill. I still miss him very much.

Yes Lips I am very lucky.
  • I believe Angels are a projection:  A projection of what we WISH would be, or our wishful thinking interpreting current events.

For every person saved by an "angel" (Which also could be attributed to good luck.) thousands and thousands die and suffer without the benefit of an angel saving them.  In some way it seems to be a form of narcissm.  In other words "I got MY angel experience."  My question would be what is so special about you (the one with the angel benefit) and NOT so special about the 5000 children who were killed in automobile accidents last year?  Or those burnt to death on the oil platform in the Gulf?  Or those killed in the flash floods in Tennessee?

  • I have a sort of "angelic" story. I woke up one morning to find one of my earrings was missing. Now, I searched my bed and bedroom high and low, but no earring. I FREAK out whenever something small is lost because my daughter puts everything in her mouth. I had all but given up, having thoroughly searched and cleaned my room. I went to look out my bedroom window, which is behing one single, big curtain and not 2 that split down the middle and there on the center of the window sill was my earring. Absolutely noone put it there and it didnt happen while I was sleeping because my bed in no way touched that window. Just thought it was a great little experience.

  • Nice story wmmeden.
