  • Three guys go to a hotel.  The room is $30
    Each guy pays $10

The manager tells the bellhop he forgot there was a room special.  The room should only be $25
He gave the bellhop $5 one dollar bills to return to the guys.
The bellhop doesn't want to calculate the breakdown so he gives each guy $1 back.

So... The guys each end up paying $9 each.  $9x3 =$27
    Bellhop kept the extra $2

    $27 + $2 = $29

    Where is the extra dollar?
    8'| huh 8'|

  • Hmmm.

    They paid a total of $30 (3 x $10 each).

    The bellhop took away $5 x $1 bills.  So technically they paid $25.  He gives them $1 each - $25 + $3 = $28 plus he kept $2 makes $30.

Doing it in "reverse" as such - yes I can see how it is $27 (3x$9) + $2 = $29.  I still can't work it out though doing it in reverse i.e. they paid $9 each and the bellhop kept $2.  Very tricky and thanks for the big brainteaser Gabby.

  • There is no extra dollar but I can't understand why I can't get the same result by calculating it "in reverse" as  Blue says.

  • Tricky one.  from original $30 down to $25.  But the guys end up paying $9 each for a total of $27.
$27 payments of the guy less the actual price of $25 equals the $2 taken by the bellhop.  Smart one, that bellhop    laugh_out_loud laugh_out_loud laugh_out_loud

and Thanks for the analogy, blue  cheesy

  • That's a great headcrusher. cheesy

  • Because you're not counting the 27th dollar as being spent.

  • So... The guys each end up paying $9 each.  $9x3 =$27
    Bellhop kept the extra $2

    $27 + $2 = $29

Just some brainless math. They  paid $9 each for room AND bellhop's "tip". So why someone adds $2 tip AGAIN? It's already included in that $9. They should add $1 that everyone got back so $27+$1+$1+$1 = $30. Where is missing $0?  laugh_out_loud
  • Good one gabby  smiley. I tried to work it out but i could not. I am anticipating the answer. I just love riddles  grin.
