  • Hiya LCB'ers,

    I saw this article...........

Alarmed that her students were bringing junk food for lunch, Chicago school Principal Elsa Carmona decided to save the children from their (nutritionally-challenged) parents … by banning brown bag lunches:

… Little Village Academy on Chicago’s West Side, students are not allowed to pack lunches from home. Unless they have a medical excuse, they must eat the food served in the cafeteria.

Principal Elsa Carmona said her intention is to protect students from their own unhealthful food choices.

"Nutrition wise, it is better for the children to eat at the school," Carmona said. "It’s about the nutrition and the excellent quality food that they are able to serve (in the lunchroom). It’s milk versus a Coke. But with allergies and any medical issue, of course, we would make an exception."

Carmona said she created the policy six years ago after watching students bring "bottles of soda and flaming hot chips" on field trips for their lunch. Although she would not name any other schools that employ such practices, she said it was fairly common.

What does everyone think about this? In my personal opinion i think its total BS! I think some of the school cafeterias offer worse food! Have they gone too far?

  • I agree that its BS. It's none of her business what kids bring to school for lunch as long as it's not alive. Why would I want my kid to eat frozen salisbury steak with powdered mashed potatoes? Unless they are cooking with organic ingredients I don't want to hear it! Even so, I'd probably opt for flamin' hots and a can of pop myself.

  • Wow - I would have a field day with the Super at that scool.  >:(

Jamie Oliver did a special last night.  Went to some school to show them how to make the food healthier.  What happened?  They wouldn't let him in.  thumbs_down

We have printed lunch menus and if my 4th grader doesn't like some high fat/high carbs/non nutritional crap.. it's MY right as his mother to pack something he likes and will eat.

PLUS.. Are they going to pay for those required lunches?  huh huh My Sister-in-law has 5 kids.  She can't afford to spend $40-$50 every 9 days (per kid) for hot lunches, especially if it's something they don't like or won't eat.

  • LOL Froggy at the powdered mashed potatoes. smiley

  • It is a bit funny how its all about nutrition. Yet she does does not actually state anything about the food being nutritious.

It could go either way in all reality. I've seen a school that had a catered lunch delivered everyday with mildly gourmet organic food.

On the other hand, the school may just get kickbacks from a vendor for only serving they're food.

I would like to see the school require the same of its staff. So worried about the kids, wouldn't you take care of your employees first?  >:D >:D >:D

  • Our government does not have to follow the laws they make so why would she have to follow the rules she makes...  8'|

I can imagine a whole lot of kids have allergies or develop them so they are exempt from the lunch program...  sick

And when were parents usurped as the final arbiters in the matter of raising their children... do they really just turn this kind of power over their children over to a control freak like this woman?  huh

Pardon my soapbox... just have to stomp my feet sometimes... woo

  • I guess my kids would of gotten kicked out, because I would of continued to let them bring a brown bag lunch. In fact a bigger brown bag, with the family size chips and 2 liter soda...just for extra kicks laugh_out_loud laugh_out_loud laugh_out_loud

    LOL
  • Just like the online gambling laws and not giving us our rights or freedom. It's getting pretty pathetic when your dictated to what you can or can not eat. I hope the parents of the kids all ban together and pack a brown bag lunch, march in the school, find the principal and put a brown paper bag over his head!
