Why do some of the "free" games listed do not let me play "free" because I reside in a certain country? Also, I used to play the "free" games provided by SHERIFF all the time and now,of a sudden, I can't play them because of living in the U.S.  What gives?

Mr. Green Casino will allow you to play their games in fun mode and offer multiple software games.

A tough software is Microgaming for US to play in fun mode. I have noticed too that more and more casinos/software are restricting US from playing. I don't really understand why since it is not real money.

There might be some licensing problem for those games, which restrict the availability to certain territories.

Yes, more and more casinos everyday restricting US players from playing games in fun mode and since we do not host our free games but embed them from various sources instead we are forced to remove such games for our US members. Furthermore, they tend to do it without any prior notice. Its likely that reason for it, as Johny mentioned, are licencing problems.
