  • Watching too much Television can fit into the "Criteria for Substance Abuse"

Millions of Americans are so hooked on television that they fit the criteria for substance abuse as defined in the official psychiatric manual, according to Rutgers University psychologist and TV-Free America board member Robert Kubey. Heavy TV viewers exhibit five dependency symptoms two more than necessary to arrive at a clinical diagnosis of substance abuse.
    These include:
    1) using TV as a sedative
    2) indiscriminate viewing
    3) feeling loss of control while viewing
    4) feeling angry with oneself for watching too much
    5) inability to stop watching
    6) feeling miserable when kept from watching.

    Television Statistics
According to the A.C. Nielsen Co., the average American watches more than 4 hours of TV each day (or 28 hours/week, or 2 months of nonstop TV-watching per year). In a 65-year life, that person will have spent 9 years glued to the tube.

How many of you could do without TV? How many have spent at least 24 Hours without turning on the TV?

I think i need to call 1 800 Tube Anon  worried

  • I always use the TV to help me go to sleep, apparently I can't close my eyes without somebody blabbering in the background.

  • LMAO at someone blabbering in the background..

Johnny me too i have to have the TV to sleep, but if i wake up and one of those paid ads are on for say something like.. that kitchen gadget "the magic bullet" i'll be asking myself very quietly, with my eyes glued to the tube..what the heck am i doing up at 3 am watching this?

  • but if i wake up and one of those paid ads are on for say something like.. that kitchen gadget "the magic bullet" i'll be asking myself very quietly, with my eyes glued to the tube..what the heck am i doing up at 3 am watching this?

I've asked myself that question many times smiley
  • I am just the opposite, i don't really watch a lot of TV. I could probably go for a few days without ever turning it on. Sometimes something major happens in the world i won't know for a few days. Someone will start talking about it to me and i'm like huh? They think i must live under a rock.

So not watching enough TV has it's drawbacks too.
