Have you ever wondered how Google got it’s name? A couple of graduate students at Stanford University came up with the name thus Google was born. The Ph.D. candidates, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, had called their initial search engine “BackRub”, because it analyzed the web's back links.
The name Google actually came to be due to the misspelling of the word while doing a online search for the availabilty of the name. The intended name was Googol. In 1997, they and some other grad students were discussing a new name and decided to link it to a gigantic number to reflect the immense amount of data the engine could search and index. The group hit upon googol, which is 1 followed by 100 zeroes. A term that was coined in 1938 by mathmatician Edward Kasner. Looking for a term for a very large number, he asked his 9 year old newphew who suggested “googol”.
What is your favorite search engine?
Google or Googol!
