  • Hi folks,

Tonight, I found a pigeon that had been run over in the road. He was still alive and he couldn't move much.  His little wing was flapping so much and yet cars just drove past, nearly running him over again.  I went over to this poor little fella, folded his wing properly and picked him up (and nearly got run over myself).

His little heart was beating really fast and yet he just let me hold him.  I think he was in shock.  There was no blood or anything gory like that.  His little eyes were closing like he wanted to sleep.  I really thought he was going to die in my hands.

I kicked on my friends door and she managed to find a box to put him in.  We took him over to the vets which was about 3 miles away and handed him over.

I know a lot of people hate pigeons and call them vermin and they carry a lot of germs, but for the life of me I couldn't leave that poor little fella in the middle of the road like that.  I really felt relieved when I handed him to the vet to look after.

Have you ever saved an animal or bird that's been run over or injured by a car?

    blue

  • No, but I have hit and killed a cat, a deer, and a couple of birds.  I felt really bad.

  • My family has taken in some "Wild Animals" (Birds mainly) but they usually died within a day or so from shock and such. I related the cat incident already. and my family was always a sucker for abandoned pets...

I know pigeons are nasty, but as it says in the Bible. "How you treat your animals is indicitive about how you treat others" Obviously you are a caring individual Blue. Thank you.

  • Hi Blue =)  yes I have ran over squirrel, a cat and even an ugly ole possum and made me feel soo bad, they all are God's creatures and have feelings too...and what you did to help this pigeon....WAS A VERY KIND THING TO DO..Good Job!!!

  • I have tried with birds, but with no luck. A baby possum, with no luck. It took me forever to bury it because I wasn't sure if it was doing it's "thing" or not. No one would take him because of wild animal. My friend has made it her job to pick up dead animals, or find owners to lost animals, and etc. That's fine to do the good thing saving a life, or to help someone out, but less than a month ago, what turned out to be me helping drive a car back from Indian Casino turned into too many hours away from husband, anyway, and that's without helping steer 12 goats back to her neighbors house. One had to be put down because car ran into them. Poor thing.    PS Just because I had no luck, doesn't mean your humane act won't. Another friend and his family was successful with a bird.

  • I saved a bird like that last year. He could not fly, so I put him in one of my cat's little cages for a few days, got him food and took care of him. Then it looked like he was ready to get out, let him out and for days he would just jump around in the garden, still could not fly. I made sure that he was save from my cats and the dogs, actually made friends with them.  All was well until I got home one night after work and he was laying on the street, run over by a car thumbs_down.

  • Blue that is absolutely wonderful what you did!! Many many and i mean many people would of left that birdie for dead. Bless your soul!  And the rest of you too with your rescue stories!

In fact i will tell you a little story. I was actually a bird thief. I had a next door neighbor who had pigeons in a cage that was built for one bird max. She had about 8 pigeons in this tiny cage. These pigeons could not literally move in this cage! In the summer she would set the cage outside on her front porch.

Every day i would see these pigeons in the cage all cramped and could barely turn around. I believe one of them was about to have babies because there was a little nest inside on top of all these poor birds! As the summer went on i got more and more ticked off. Seems all i would do was fret over these birds. I had come to the conclusion that she was either a whack job who mistreated these birds with her hoarding or she was breeding them to sell them.

Anyway one day i was sitting on my front porch and i saw her leave the house and there was the birds! Well like a Lucy and Ethyl stunt team me and a friend who was on the porch with me leaped into action! Jumped over the fence and took that bird cage!

I brought it to my house and called the local wildlife shelter but they would not take the pigeons because they were not injured. And i am thinking to myself they are injured, but they are abused! So we came up with plan B. There is a vet near by that deals with exotic pets and called to ask where could take these poor birdies. They were not very helpful or too interested.

So we get in the car running like two crazy people hoping no one saw us and would tell my neighbor! We go to the exotic pet vet and we decided to leave the cage right in front of the door. I knew once they were discovered they would know exactly what to do!

Now this is what was comical. We pull along side the building and i was about to get out of the car when the receptionist is coming back from lunch and about to go inside. Here i am struggling with this bird cage in the back seat when she offers to bring it inside for me. I said YES!!!!! She brings the birds in and we take off like a bat out of hell!

My neighbor never asked a soul what happened to the birds. And i never felt one bit bad she did not have them anymore!

  • Some really touching stories.  Thank you for sharing.

wmmeden, Sometimes there is nothing that can be done to stop from hitting these poor unfortunate creatures.

genenco.  Thank you for your kind words.  Shock is definitely a factor when it comes to whether they survive or not.

dixiesace.  It is sad and thank you for your kind words.

helwin.  Your friend sounds like a real saint.  I hope this little birdie has a bit of luck too.

lagunagirl.  A very kind act indeed.  What a sad ending to your story.

Lips. Thank you for your kind words.  You definitely did the right thing.  Your neighbour certainly sounded a bit strange.  I guess sometimes that doing the right thing feels like you're doing the wrong thing but you know it's the right thing to do.  Bless you for your kind act.

  • Blue, the deer got her revenge on the amount of damage to my truck.  They can mess a vehicle up. A friends father had one come crashing thru his side window. It was a buck chasing a doe.  The dad was injured by the antlers, but the deer surprisingly lived.

That must have been quite a scary experience.  Amazing the dear lived.

  • on holiday, at the beach, I found a kitten, maybe a couple weeks old in one of those stand up sand filled ashtrays; guess someone chucked it
poor little bugger; It's eyes were milked over and scabbed, mouth all cracked and dry as it baked in the sun and was dying
my friends walked right past...i couldn't effing belive it
we were on holiday and i stayed in all weekend nursing it, holding it and feeding it water and milk thru a soaked cloth and after vacation took it home
my roomies bitched saying, no cats; i told them to stuff it
it weighed maybe a pound, wouldnt, move, walk or drink; i just kept at the wet cloth forcing it to drink
after a couple days its eyes finally opened  but all milked over

aaanyway, fast forward a week..little bugger was spry and active, alot of the milk went away and was frisky as sin though proabably major vision loss. Passed it along to a friend who had several cats and could keep it

That was so kind of you, people can be heartless.  We as a society should be ashamed of how we treat those who are dependent upon us, whether they be animal or people.
  • I'm a soft touch for animals
A hundred get blown up? Don't blink
    Someone kicks a puppy? ShootHIM!..lol

  • I knew you had a good heart dt.  Glad the little kitty was as ok as he could have been thanks to you.

  • ah, I can be a bastard and short-fused, but a romantic and animal lover

  • What you did is so rare nowadays, you don't to much see that anymore, life is life no matter how big or tiny, ALL Gods Creatures should be loved and respected.. Thank YOU Blue... for your Big Heart!

Yes Blue, i was the neighborhood animal shelter and vet @ 10 yrs old.. people in the neighborhood would bring their strays, abandoned and hurts animals to me and i would take care of them, the faces of the people with sadness as if to say "can you help him?" i swear our backyard was like a zoo, i spent alot of childhood years doing this, my mother and father with their kind heart did spend money on vets when it got beyond whatever i could do (overtime the vet started giving them a break with certain free services). The best time i remember was a set of the cutest otters were abonadoned and given to me (they were so skinny and not in good health, i researched and called the vet to get the advice on how to care for them) in time got them back to being an.. otter..lol, their playfulness, closeness and the love i had for them lifted me every day, and boy did i have a great time playing and making mud pies with them! One cat we had got hit by a car, the car scalped him and left a whole in the top of his head, everyone thought he was going to die, i said no he won't.. we took him to the vet, the vet stitched his scalp as best he could with all the damage, we named him franky (short for frankenstien) the injury left it mutated so his whole face was a little crooked and he did have some noticible brain damage (he was just a little slow, the vets couldn't beleive this kitty lived and became their icon on our visits and had his picture for inspiration of miracles that can be performed) he lived 10 yrs hehe!!

I had anywhere from my otters to snakes, turtles and lizards, not to mention the birds, cats and dogs, i didn't give up til i found homes, even once had over 50 frogs!!! LMAOOO

  • Wow Imagin.  You truly are a patron saint of little creatures.  You sound like you had a good time looking after them too.

I wonder where these people would have taken these animals if it wasn't for you?

I'm amazed that cat survived and he got to be 10 years old too.

An incredible story and thank you for sharing.

    blue
