  • If you think your drunk driving laws are tough consider these....

England - One year supervision, 1 year jail, 250.00 fine

Poland - Offenders are jailed, fined and forced to attend political lectures.

El Salvadore - Your first conviction is your last, Execution by firing squad

Norway - The penalty is 3 weeks in jail hard labor, one year loss of license. Second offense within 5 years your license is revoked for life.

France - Three years loss of license, 1 year jail time, $1,000 fine.

South Africa - The penalty is a 10 year jail sentence, or the equivalent of $10,000 fine or both.

Finland/Sweden - Automatic one year jail time at hard labor.

Turkey - Drunks are taken 30 miles from town by police and forced to walk back under escort

Bulgaria - A second conviction results in execution.

Russia - License is revoked for life.

Malaya - The driver is jailed if he is married the wife is jailed too.

The names of the drivers are posted in the local newspapers under the heading "He's drunk and in Jail"

So you think you got it tough.. what laws have you found to be Tough or not so tough elsewhere?

  • I've seen this list before, the one in Malaya cracks me up...its like guilt by association!
IMHO the drunk driving laws here aren't tough enough but the Bulgarians are going a bit too far.
I know that punishments for commiting all types on non violent crimes  in Singapore are harsh. Like spitting on the side walk can result in jail time and a serious fine.

  • El Salvadore - Your first conviction is your last, Execution by firing squad

this one is whoooooaaaaaa.. thats a no tolerance law!!!

  • Yeah, but the problem with some of those third world countries is that the written law is somewhat of a joke. The police are more corrupt than criminals. In the majority of those cases, the offender just pays off the cops or judge.

  • This is for the state of nevada... first conviction

Jail – From 2 Days to 6 Months
    Fine – From $400 to $1,000
    License Suspension – 90 Days
Restricted License Possible After Half of Suspension is Served
Ignition Interlock Device (May be Required for Restricted License)
Community Service – 96 Hours (If Allowed - Instead of Jail Time)
DUI School Tuition - $150 (Average Cost)
    DUI Program or Treatment (Possible)

    Second conviction.... within 7 years

Jail – From 10 Days to 6 Months
    Fine – From $750 to $1,000
License Suspension – 1 Year (No Restricted License Possible)
Community Service – From 100 to 200 Hours
May be Subject to Vehicle Registration Suspension
1 Year Supervised DUI Program or Treatment (Possible)

Third conviction... (it gets me that it even ever gets to a third, even a second)

    Prison – From 1 to 6 Years
    Fine – From $2,000 to $5,000
    License Suspension – 3 Years
    Restricted License Possible
Ignition Interlock Device (If Restricted License Allowed)

May be Subject to Vehicle Registration Suspension
3 Year Supervised DUI Program or Treatment (Possible)

  • I wonder how it would be here if, your first conviction was your last for drunk driving in USA death by execution... i wonder if there would be less drunk drivers OR more deaths by execution...

  • I think more people would be against the death penalty.

  • OMG, that's insane.  If I live in El Salvador or Bulgari and I have alcohol problem, I'll try to move out of the country asap.  Execution?  :o shocked drunk driving get the penalty like convicted murder, dam.

after reading this "Malaya - The driver is jailed if he is married the wife is jailed too" makes me  :o shocked shocked shocked shocked , this is the craziest penalty ever  :o shocked shocked

a husband was drunk driving home and got pulled over by the cops.  He was handcuffed and put in the back of the police car.  The cops drive to his house, knock on the door in the middle of the night.
officer:  open the door, this is the police
wife:  what's going on officer? (she asks in half sleep voice) this is late.
officer:  your husband got caught for drunk driving and we'r gonna put him in jail and by law, we come here to get you also.
wife:  What? I didnt even know he was out there drinking officer, I have 10 little children to take care of, they will die if I go to jail
officer:  sorry to hear that, but you've gotta go with us, ask your relative if they can take care of them for you.

wife:  cry, please dont, my children will die, I have noone can help me at this time right now.
officer:   I'm sorry, but we have to enforce the law.  If something happen to your children, your husband is the blame.
the  10 year old boy, Bobby, come out, holding his mom and ask, "Mom, where r you going?"
wife:  Bob, here's a little money I have left, buy some milk, some food, and try to take care of your sibblings while we'r gone, you hear me? me and your dad have to take a little vacation right now
Bob:  when you will be back mom? what if I run out of this money?
wife:  we dont know yet, but we'll try to get back asap and if you are out of the money, take all of your sibblings outside, sit them in the front door and begging our neighbor for help, you hear me??
    Bob:  yes mom

  • isn't that insane, very tough very stiff penalties, some countries don't even allow booze at all, and you can face death for having it... and it is real

that would be horrible taaa.. imagining that kind of scenario.. hopefully the husband won't be so stupid and drive while drunk!

  • Possesion of drugs...in China...BANG!! (Yep)

  • "England - One year supervision, 1 year jail, 250.00 fine"

You will be banned from driving for a minimum of 1 year.  They generally add on 4 months to that ban so it would be 1 year 4 months but it can be reduced by those 4 months if you take a drink awareness course.  The max ban is generally 3 years.  Fines range up to about £3000.  But - they are clamping down even more at the moment.

    Damn right too.

I think the death by firing squad is a little over the top though.  Very scary laws indeed.

  • interesting thread sweetie:)

i somehow think, those badass punishments do tend to lower the crime rate, be it drunk driving or thievery or anything else.
maybe if they put out the death penalty, and leave the hard jail time and fines, i think they should do it here too:
to me everybody's free to party, drink nd do drugs, but take responsibility:
have someone long to be the driver, rent  a cab, or use bicycles or cheap motels, take the early bus or train.
you name it: there never need to drive drunk or influenced and cause major deaths by accident.
somehow people think their better then the booze they tke, aand feel that this one time is not bad, but thats how all those accidents happen.
the morality is low in our western society, and even lower when under influence:)

  • Here they have it backwards, though i don't do any kind of drugs, theres a no tolerance for possesion of drugs as well as under influence, you can get some serious prison time, for alcohol.. it's a 3 strikes you're out... i think the law should be just as stiff for driving while drunk as it is for having drugs and being under the influence driving. Give a drunk driver 3 chances? Makes no sense to me.

  • Reminded me of the boy...chewing gum and got arrested...shoot I don't remember which country that was...they put him in jail and such a fiasco...but I don't remember...oooowww I hate it when I don't remember things. sad

Most likely it wqas Indonesia. They are VERY strict regarding...Clean streets. Remember the kid of a serviceman who got caned for vandalism? The hue and cry "Oh that's too severe!" was heard through this country.

So he got it reduced a bit, but frankly he got lucky. I remember from years ago the commercial warning to US citzens going overseas. "If you're busted for drugs over there, you're in for the hassle of your life"

They operate on the Napolenic laws of "You're GUILTY until proven innocent" Quite a difference from ours for sure.
  • The only thing that i can understand about why our country is so lienient on such things as alcohol is the money it brings, how sad is that. True we should have tougher laws on things as vandalism, cleaner street laws and etc. The money we use to clean up the disrespect of the country, probably amounts to the sum of what we do get for the alcohol, along with the money thats spent on the jail sentences. I think enforcement of larger fines, larger penalties is an answer, awful that it comes to that but it should devastate your life if you want to do these types of crimes. We shouldn't even have to learn respect in such harshness, we should already know better, through generations of families instilling it within all of us.

  • A while ago some kids were throwing huge bricks at windows near where I live.  I rang the police and they said "have they broken any windows yet".  I said no they hadn't.  They said "well unless they do, there is nothing we can do".

I thought "policing" was what it says on the tin - policing.  Clearly thats not the case.

Isn't there an idea to stop the crime before it happens? Throwing bricks at windows is NOT a game children should play, clearly should of been stopped, and who knows if you would of went out there and tried to stop them that they would throw them at you.

Blue that is something very serious to think about that the police are unconcerned with what all that could actually caused, someone could get hurt badly.
  • I may complain about the gambing laws in the country where I live(USA) but I am very grateful I live here! Remind me not to get married or live in Malaya! Man-those poor women!

    Exactly Imagin.

It's very frustrating that's for sure.  Lack of resources is the only thing I can think of but they should still have responded and stopped them.

Poor women is right, to have a record you were in jail because your husband drank... alot of these laws are set upon humilation and devastation, you are right we do have it somewhat easier here for alot of things, i drink sometimes but i would never get behind the wheel while doing so.
