  • Are you a sushi lover?
    Then don't forget this coming one of fun food holidays, International Sushi day which is June 18th.
    Many people think sushi is raw fish but it really has nothing to do it but just referring to the vinegar seasoned rice used in making.
    There are so many different types of this dish that are generally called sushi.
    So I thought it would be fun to list some of them.

    Sashimi=>simply slices of raw fish (often salmon or tuna). It is not served with the sushi rice.

    Nigiri=> It is made from forming a handful of rice into a mound, and placing a piece of seafood over the top.

    Maki rolls=>It is made from wrapping wrapping sushi rice and various fillings inside a seaweed wrapper.
    If you don't like seaweed, you can ask for soy paper. wink

    My personal favorite is Futomaki which are thick sushi rolls with a number of fillings.
    It's good to use your favorite fillings like avocado, eggs, dried kanpyo (strips of gourd), mushrooms, radish and cucumber...

    do you have any favorite one(s)?

  • I eat nothing out of any body of water.

    I wish I liked sushi or any seafood but I can't even eat a heavily breaded popcorn shrimp.

  • Sorry Nan but be_sickamp; tongue
  • Wnanhee, Sushi is my favorite food, its a bit expensive here in L.A, CA. but I try to eat it at least once a week.

  • Nan, I love this question darn near as much as I love sushi!! cheesy thumbs_up I find sushi to be the freshest unadulterated thing I can eat... do wish it did not cost an arm and a leg so I could eat it all the time!

    My favorite would be Nigiri Tobiko with a quail egg!
    Like this --->

    2nd favorite is Unagi...

  • I have to say that I've never actually tried sushi or even been in a position to try it.

    I really don't know if I would like it but that remains to be seen.

    I'm sure you'll be preparing some on the 18th Nan.  Enjoy!

  • I agree with you, rosebud.... be_sickamp;

    And, katt.....quail eggs. Double  be_sickamp;

  • I love love love love sushi!

    I got pretty good with the chop sticks too. Ya don't really have much of a choice so ya got to learn. I like the ones with cream cheese, crab, shrimp and avocado.

  • I agree with you, rosebud.... be_sickamp;

    And, katt.....quail eggs. Double  be_sickamp;

    That is a raw quail egg!   tongue tongue laugh_out_loud
  • Yummmmm...Now you are making me hungry. grin

    Like I said in early post, sushi is not all about raw fish but variety of food/veggies mixed with rice... wink
    Anyway, Katt...you have a good taste I too love Unagi(freshwater eels) especially when I add  an extra wasabi mixed with gingers on the top...love the sensation of it's making my nose tingle.
    Have you tried wasabi ice cream before? Yummmmmm!!!

    Lucy, I also live close to L.A and my favorite restaurant is Kiriko which is located in Olympic Blvd and the price is very fair. Which one's your favorite?

    Wow,Lips...You never stop impress me...have you tried skinny silver chop sticks(harder to use)?
    I think you would like these also- Rock n roll and tempera roll.

  • Hmmm Wasabi Ice Cream... never encountered that, but if they can have garlic ice cream then I am sure it would be good! And if you say yummmmmmmmmm I believe you!  Funny how the sensations in your mouth are such an important part of sushi... one of the reasons Tobiko is my favorite is because of the little popping of the flying fish roe and the cool raw quail egg mixed in with that... I don't like octopus for the same reason, the rubbery feel of it in my mouth... but you can bring on the squid!  LOL  And I love those kind of fancy rolls that both you and lips showed in your pictures... I am now officially starving!!

    katt

  • I am a huge fan of sushi. I love the spicy wasabi and fresh ginger. I will try anything they put in front of me.

  • I honestly don't see how anybody eats it. I went to a sushi restaurant one time, and ordered what sounded to be the best thing on the menu.  sick  I took a bite, and couldn't even force myself to get it down. Spit it back out on the plate, paid, and left.  laugh_out_loud

  • I guess it's one one of those things you either love it or not.I'm a little chicken when it comes to foods..not even much of a meat eater..oh well as long as I don't start clucking laugh_out_loud embarrassed embarrassed wink
  • Oh c'mon Rosebud. I can't imagine anything more appetizing than raw fish.  laugh_out_loud

  • nan,
    I am in W.L.A about 5min to Olympic Blvd. My favorite place is ANJU Sushi its in a little shopping center on Barrington. nan.. are we neighbors smiley

  • Lucy......................... <3
    I live about hour and half from where you live but I just love thinking we are neighbors!
    I am definitely going to try the restaurant you mentioned.

    Katt...have you ever tried fresh live octopus? Try it with hot sake. wink
    I ate couple times when I was a kid and they were fun.... they squirm in your mouth. laugh_out_loud

    Raw fish -(fresh ones) are really healthy...
    Just came back from visiting family and we went for diving twice because I told my uncles how much I have missed fresh raw abalone... grin

  • Nan, I was startin' to think that live octopus might be a little to squiggly and beyond what I might willingly eat, but then you threw in the hot sake... now I gotta try it!  woo

  • Oh c'mon Rosebud. I can't imagine anything more appetizing than raw fish.  laugh_out_loud

  • I LOVE sushi.. but thats not how it started with me...

    We went to this sushi bar a group of 7 of us, The Cherry Blossum in Calif.. very nice restaurant.. They have other stuff on the menu, like steak, chicken and pork for those of us who had a really tough time imagining themselves eating raw fish.They cooked everything right at the table, i still remember the chef, his fantastic talents with knives and utinsels, fascinating to watch.. really wowed me. Anyways sushi was brought to the table.. all kinds from shrimp, to squid, to octopus, to the exotic which i can't remember the name.. and then there was saki .. I enjoyed the saki lol.. everyone had the sushi and were familiar with it, but not me..it's like your mind says.. oh hell no, but the mouth says.. well maybe, but the mind wins.. and i was no NO way gonna eat something like that.. you can still see the suckers on the octopus, the squid with its legs all curled up. I was watching everyone enjoying it, a friend said "Try it, it's good, i'm like "no way jose.. i run from seaweed in the ocean at the beaches, now you want me to eat it.." We were at this restaurant for 7 hours, 4 hours were spent teasing me and trying to get me to taste it, i was stubborn.. Then someone got smart, "ill give you 5 dollars if you just try the ebi (shrimp) and another 5 if you try the teki-maki (tuna).. " Money talks lol..and i said alright for 10 bucks ill do it... I think for the money it was worth it to see my reaction. I tried the ebi.. put a little wasabi, little soy sauce, dipped the shrimp roll and swirled it around in the mix.. brought it to my mouth and froze.. i looked at everyone.. all eyes were steady on me with faces ill never forget lmao.. I took a deep breath and took a bite.. i fell in love.. it was delicious, by the end of the night i was addicted..rang up an unbeleivable bill..and collected my 10 bucks too lol.. But i don't like the octopus, the squid is good if you cook it with the seasame seed oil.. the shrimp and tuna, i'd eat for days lol..

    Thumbs up for Sushi Day!  thumbs_up

  • Wow, Imagin...it sounds like you had a Delicious time and I am so glad you were brave enough to try them.
    To me it has always been such a pleasure and excitement to try new and different types of food and Sushi definitely is one of them.

    Katt...I couldn't wait for you to get messy with me-lol- so I took my monkeys instead last night.
    Yummy Tempra California rolls, spicy tuna rolls and bowl of udon made our night(was my girl's b-day).
