A robber attempts to rob a Papa John's Pizza in Montana. Dressed in a black hoodie and a red bandanna to cover his face he hands over a note to the cashier demanding money. But unlike most robbers, he begins to cry saying he is doing it for his wife and child.
The clerk talked to him for a while and had enough empathy for him, ending up giving him free pizza, wings and soda to go. Seems all he really needed was to feed his hungry family.
While he waited patiently for his order a knife fell out of his pocket. Once the food was ready he left the restaurant not to be seen again.
It is uncertain if charges will be brought against him.
This kind of struck a cord for me and made me stop to think that in desperate times do good people take desperate measures to survive? The empathy the clerk had was commendable and most out of fear would have never handled the situation like this.
Do you think the man should be prosecuted?

It is a tough one lips, and sad story, but kinda in the middle on this, so cant really give a direct answer.
but he had a knife, so that kinda makes the situation a bit more worse than it was if things didnt go right it could have ended worse, but yes the clerk i feel handled it in the best way i think the clerk could have given the circumstances.

I don't like to judge people, for many reasons. Just stating the obvious, he didn't ask for food he asked for money. So basically he just chickened out in the middle of his robbery, but the intent was to rob. Arrested, probably. prosecuted, probably, sentenced- that's why we have judges. Community service would be great for this guy. But not a fine or prison, IMHO.

I think we should look at the big picture here, no one got hurt, if no one wants to press charges, etc. My point is people screw up all the time to varying degrees, now we don't know this person's situation but after that act of kindness he may very well never do anything like that again. Is it worth the time and money to prosecute, convict, etc. Now I'm not excusing this action but looking at it from a different perspective. He may very well become a productive member of society. I still think if people can be approached and redirected when they are extremely angry or distraught, a tragedy can be avoided.

The knife fell out of his pocket at the end. He never used it. I would let the guy go. He obviously had heart enough to feed his family and express emotion at what he was bringing himself to do. Actually all he did wrong was hand over a note. He didn't carry out any of the actions that go along with a robbery. What are they gonna do, arrest him for passing a note and crying?

It's a good thing that the clerk kept his cool there; this could be a really tragic story otherwise. Honestly, I'm glad that he helped him and gave him the food. It was a nice gesture.
I also understood that he didn't use the knife; so I'm just curious how everything happened exactly. -

im afraid i will have to be the bad guy for this one....NO MATTER...what the reason.......attempted robbery is just that.....robbery....as soon as he passed the note he had committed the crime......probably 35 percent or maybe more of crimes committed in this economy are to feed one's family. He could have stood outside the store with a sign that said please buy food for my family and he would have gotten more food. if this is ok, where do you draw the line? the law is the law and this guy gets 200 hours of community service, mandatory counseling and 4 years probation plus he would of gotten a beatdown if that was my store (especially if he decides to bring a knife to a gun fight lol)

to me the harm was done as soon as he passed the note....this was the act of attempted robbery at minimum...possibly armed robbery....what if the clerk had a heart attack...the more i think about this scenario the more guilty this guy is
I don't think he should be prosecuted, there was no harm done after all. However, if he does have a criminal record I guess the situation might change a bit.

Sometimes things in life are not simply black and white. What if the world ended tomorrow? Playing the "what if" game doesn't change the fact that no harm was done in this situation. So he tried to commit a crime and couldn't go through with it. He passed a note and cried. No way that person felt threatened once the tears came. The knife fell out of his pocket and it wasn't like he was swinging it around. Doesn't sound the kind of person that has the heart to be a criminal. Was a really bad day in his world.

to me, the fact that he sat down, though about it, grabbed a knife, wrote a note, went down there, sounds like someone who's a criminal to me
a drunk driver climbs behind the wheel, runs a few stop signs, drives home, manages not to hurt anyone, wakes up, feels bad...cops catch him on surveilance...do we give him the chance to drive again, or hope he learned his lesson if he cried when the cops show up? -

When people get desperate, they will do things that they normally wouldn't!! If he was just doing it to feed his family,I'm glad it ended the way it did.
As far as charging him,the last thing he needs is jail. There are some seriously bad people in them, who have committed a lot worse. He needs a job,not jail!! -

everyone has alot of feelings for this guy....and i would be the first to help him and is family out with food if i knew of his situation....but the question is.....is what he did acceptable? can i grab a woman and if she resists, start crying and say no harm no foul? because i was horny? id say i broke the law. tough times or noit...this guy broke the law....why have laws against robbery if you can cry your way out of it. if someone did this to one of our loved ones who was working as the cashier would we still be ok with it? would it change our perspective if it was our store? the law is the law, the penalty for breaking the law is where the leniency or harshness can be sentenced by the judge. as i posted earlier, no jail, guilty as hell of attempted robbery which includes all the lifetime benefits of being a convicted robber.

This reminds me of Victor Hugo's novel "Les Miserables". Jean Valjean steals from a priest's house but the priest lets him get away with it and that act of kindness and forgiveness transforms the ex-convict into a better man. I know it's just a book but I honestly believe that all people are good deep down inside them, you just need to dig very deep to find that good side in some humans though.
