  • Does anyone make Sun Tea any more?

When i was growing up in the summer time, my first rememberence of the "sun tea jar" was all along the neighborhood these big jars sat on the porches with this funny colored stuff in it. My first thought was, why does everyone have these jars of peepee on their porches, what is this ritual, dead serious this is what i thought it was..
I asked my mom one day, why does everyone have peepee on there porch? My mom said what are you talking about.. i took her outside and said look mom.. see the jars? She laughed hard at me and said thats not peepee thats TEEAAA!! It looks like pee to me mom..

We went inside she got a big glass jar, filled it with water, put in a bunch of teabags, six bags i think, showed me how to put the bags in, to leave the string over the rim and screw the lid on with the strings hanging out, so they dangle in the water. We went outside, she walked around a bit til she found the perfect sunlit spot and put the jar down. My mind was, this is the neatest thing i have my own sun tea jar, and i'm going to be making TEAA!! I checked it every few minutes, i watched it all day.. as little by little the color changed and i remember saying.. "it's getting darker mom" "how much longer mom" i must have annoyed the heck out of my mom all day. FINALLY, right after the sun set.. it was ready. She brought it in added sugar, stirred it, added ice, poured it into these tall glasses and handed me one.. It was the best glass of peepee i ever drank smiley

As a child you think so innocently, well, later in life my daughter as a child came and asked me the same question.. and boy did i laugh, i can actually feel and see through her eyes how and what she must of thought, as it happened to me!

We made Sun Tea that day..

Does anyone have any good Sun Tea recipes, or ways they did it to make it extra special?

  • I spent my earlier childhood in the TX heat, and we would make it the same way almost every day.  Peppermint leaves grow prominently almost everywhere it seemed, so we would grab some fresh peppermint leaves and toss them in too.  Added some lemon in our glasses, and YUMMM.  I haven't had that in years.

  • I do make it sometimes...actually since you mentioned it, maybe I will make 1 today!  ;)
No special recipe..pretty much the same you mentioned.

  • I love sun tea!!! I love tea of any kind. I drink tea over pop. There always seems to be something fun about drinking sun tea and homemade lemonade!

I prefer to make mine with with lemons an no sugar. I love green tea too i wonder how that would turn out as sun tea....hmmm have to try out!

    Lips
  • Fresh Peppermint leaves! Good idea Toodle, and lemon!

I must be sleepy or something i thought you meant tea OVER pop, meaning a mixture, but you mean, tea rather than pop lol..

lol.. green sun tea.. hmmm i have some green tea bags i think ill try it tomorrow..

What else goes good in tea besides, peppermint, lemon and sugar...

  • I know someone that works for a tea place. Some teas i very very expensive. They go as high as $200 an ounce!! Can ya even imagine that?

She has alot of recipes for tea and i will ask her!

  • I wish I could say that I've tried Sun Tea but I can't cos I'd never even heard of it before.  It sounds delicious and refreshing.  I'm a huge tea drinker and I'm just wondering if this sun tea is a special blend?

    blue

  • Blue try it one day, you can use any tea bags, you have to have the hot sun to make it though, after it's made add whatever you like, and keep it fridged, for me it seems to have a more mild and smoother flavor.

  • not sunny where you are?  don't want to wait hours and hours?
    Lipton Cold Brew!
The warmer the water, the faster the brew.  To me it tastes a lot like suntea. 5 minutes and we're sipping!

I used to make suntea, 3-5 large tea bags to a gallon, keep the ants out of it, don't sweeten til it's done.

  • I love iced tea and will drink a lot of it in the summertime,my grandmother was from the south so we grew up drinking "sweet tea",but she would actually boil the teabags so sometimes it would be too strong or bitter.....well sun tea is good, but I discovered that Chillymellow and I do the same thing, just about.A few years ago I just ran warm tap water in a pitcher, added a few regular Lipton tea bags and let it steep for about an hour or so and Iwould have perfect tea without the bitterness or mess.....I LOVE TEA!

yup i agree.  lol  Liptons got that undeniable taste!  its good stuff
  • I've tried other cold brew brands, but Lipton is just a better blend.

For those without coldbrew bags, don't boil your teabags in the water on the stove.  That will make it bitter.  Boil the water and then pour the water over the tea bags in the pitcher.  Let it steep about 5 minutes.  If it's too dark, add cool water.  Usually I would use about 1/2 pitcher of boiling water, and then add the other half when steeping is complete.  You can make it stronger then pour over ice to lighten it up.
