    Hahaha;-)

  • Just another one of many scams the most famous of which, was scam 419.

Scam 419 was about some money in a bank (millions of dollars) which needed a British/USA etc signature.  The money is sitting there waiting for you and all you have to do is get in touch with the lawyer and he will prepare the documents that you need in order for you to get your hands on the money.  They will take a percentage but you can keep the rest.  What was the actual scam?  It was the cost of the documents at a massive $3000.

All emails like this should be marked as a phishing scam.

The other one is the ebay scam.  They buy your car, send you the money which is over the amount that you asked for.  You send them a return check(cheque) for the difference.  They bank it and the funds clear, you bank your cheque and well after, the refund to them has cleared, you find out that their check was a dud.

  • Oh Hell, i get daily notifications I won a zillion dollars, my 323rd uncle-in-law 14X removed died, or some poor widow needs my help

But the one that really got my heart strings?
2 months ago, my bf and I were trying to find a puppy and we found the most adorable one online, just adorable, and we were talking back and forth with the owner. All in all, it was very clever..all the right answers and questions, and claimed to be relatively LOCAL..just slightly too far to drive but close enough to sound real. We went through the whole ordeal and were  arrangeing to have the pup flown/couriered over (it's not weird, tones of people get theirs online from breeders and have them flown to) when sudedenly, BANG, the catch...send the money western union
I was 'ahhhhhhh, THERE it is'.
So, the way I was certain, is I went about asking long detailed almost redundant Qs, and found them slowly deviating from their script, the harder my Qs got. Addiontioanlly, the more flustered they got, and the farther from theit script they got, the subtly broekn English started to slip through the emails.
Anyway, end of day, it was a scam. And a VERY good one (trust, me, I'm neither stupid and VERY skeptical by nature)
The point is.....wow, be careful! The scammers are getting smarter and smarter. It's no longer deaths, lotteries, casinos etc. Now, it's adorable puppies and toying with heartstrings.
    Sad
(Lock em all up I say)

  • Here here dtsweet.  What a con that would have been.

So glad you're on the ball.

  • Hiya jschaub,

Ya know what is really sad is some people believe it! I had 2 people come to me all excited ready to send in their info. I kid you not!

I was like NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! They prey on peoples innocents and trust and thats what makes it worse. I wonder how many peeps fall for it. There has to be a small percentage.

I got last year a check in the mail with my name on it for like 10k telling me it was mine and to cash it ONLY at the currency exchange and to send a cashier ck for the 10k back to them and in return since i followed through.......there was a big reward of 50k waiting for me. The thing is the check was from a reputable bank and very believable.

The purpose is in cashing it for them was they were out of country and couldnt cash it....yeah right. I contacted the bank and gave them the ck number and they said they were fully aware of scam and to bring the ck into them.

Had i cashed that check i would be liable for 10k. Just be careful everyone there are so many scams out there. If you don't have money coming to you then its a scam!

  • yes i agree totally!!!
Everyone of us has a bit hope that he will be some day a lucky big winner:-) i got too a winning notification from ¨ Microsoft ¨ in this email was written that i won in a lottery or something like that. They promised over 1 Million usd.
I spoke then with a police officer who is there for prevent of Fraud.
He told me that this is the Nigeria Connection, and they do this now over 10 years.
He told me too that they told people that they have to come to Nigeria. And they did travel to Nigeria!!!
Then the Nigeria Connection did Kidnapped them and contact theire Familys to buy them free.
I hope everyone of us know now exactly who they are and that the Nigeria Connection will be death after 10 years scamming!!!

  • I got one saying that I would be prosecuted by the FBI if I didn't comply with their request for my personal information and my money laugh_out_loud

I was like Yeah OK...No thanks.

  • I am only waiting for the the first escrow service on this!

Here in Germany we had hat something similar: "Afraid of a scam?! Call 0900-blabla and we will check it out! We are here to protect you!!!" (9,00 EUR per minute, about 20 USD).

If you talk to them, you don´t have any money left to give it to scam artists.

  • lmao OMG 20 a minute?? huh

    WOW

    :-*

  • In Germany this is possible. With a 0900-number you can charge whatever you want, e.g. 100 bucks per call or 100 bucks per minute.

And you don´t even have to care about collecting. It´s done by the phone company for you.

  • Wow they have them in the USA too! They are usually for phone sex though. lol

I have never heard of such a high rate.

Phone sex operators make a killing with the rates they charge tongue

  • seriously i get tons of those in my email inbox. And after seeing probably a dozen/wk of these scammed emails, I did notice that they claim to be from Nigeria. Very Odd.

  • There is also the one where a secret shopper company you sign up for sends a check for you for 1k or something and then tells you to cash it at your bank and you can keep 300 but you have to Western Union it back and rate their service.  I told the person not to do it but they didn't listen.  Luckily they used it to set up a new bank account so most of the funds needed to be cleared for a few days which of course the check was found out to be fraudulent so the person was out only $200 instead of owing the bank a lot more.

  • I have heard about that scam as well..Shame on these people.

    Tsk Tsk Tsk.

  • My daughter did the secret shopping thing, got a check, the instructions were just as you say, she went to her bank, the bank immediately knew it was a scam and infact told her how it goes down..

But on top of this they were taking 19.99 out of her bank account directly, she originally called on some kind of 1.99 deal to start her and she asked about 10 times, "there will be no other money taken out of my account right" and there answer was "no".. "this is a one time payment right".. they failed to tell her "at that time"... very tricky people....

  • Wow...you gotta be careful nowadays anything can be a scam....Watch out!

    :-*

  • I've heard some real bad stuff about the secret shopper thing too.  I've seen it advertised over here.  £19.99 is the price to sign up and then you get access to the list of companies needing "secret shoppers".

My motto is - if it's too good to be true, then it probably is.

We don't stand a chance really as there are so many people wanting to rip us all off.

    blue

  • I've done secret shopping and the two biggest things that are almost 100% of the time is...
1-You don't have to pay to be a shopper (they are paying you to do a job).
2-The jobs usually pay no more than $10-$20 plus reimbursement.

Most paid gigs are more like $5-$10 each but if the shop doesn't get filled close to the deadline they will pay more because the shopping company is getting paid by the company getting shopped. (For example they have you buy alcohol at longs to make sure they are checking for ID so you get the shopper pay plus the cash back for what you bought up to a certain amount.)

This is better than sex! Think of it: You have about 1.000.000 internet newbies a day. They receive an e-mail from the nice widow of the Nigerian General or straight from the United Nations, I get these today.

Now, don´t only let them be greedy but also sceptical. They must have read something about scams in the paper.

And here we come:-) "Don´t give it directly to them, give it to our fair-and-square escrow service, off-shore based, for tax reasons only." We will take care of your security. And no, we do not accept any processors, just send cash by western union, so you will be tax safe too.

With this scheme, we would never need a LCB casino and would jackpot everyday:-)
And then you hire the Rival customer service for any requests and you´re done.

  • That is so funny rokko.  Love the last two lines.
