  •   Hi Gang:
I am a smoker. Most of my friends are smokers.  It isn't that I chose for it to be that way, it just is.  Just how it happened to turn out.

Well one of the friends in my inner circle was successful in quitting.  She went cold turkey, and dropped the habit in about 2 weeks. Made it look easy.  tongue

Gang, I am telling you now, it is almost miserable to be around her now.
All her time is spent telling us to quit the "nasty habit."  That it "stinks", that it is bad for us. That she is subjected to second hand smoke when she hangs out with us.  That she goes home smelling of cigarette smoke. That we are killing ourselves with each puff.
She even went as far as sending me a email with a picture of a man dying of lung cancer.
Now I know she means well, but she is over the top with it.
Do Ex-smokers think this type of talk helps the rest of us to quit?

Once, many years ago, I had quit too. I quit for nine years. Was I the same way? Did I push my opinions on people around me about smoking?
What happens to people after they are able to quit and then suddenly turn into an advocate for the National Cancer Society? :-\

Anyone out there ever deal\dealing with an Ex-Smoker?
How about folks that have a spouse or significant other that does not smoke and you do?

  • PMM,

There is nothing and i mean NOTHING worse than an ex smoker. But what irks me is these very same people who were once smokers.......despised a reformed smoker.

I am pretty much even keeled.....but when out in the public and dealing with nonsmokers.....i find it hard to have composure.

  • OH....It gets only better from here on out PMM. Just wait until she rediscovers her "FAITH". That is usually the next step 4 some1 with this kind of personality.  laugh_out_loud!

U know I probably have cursed u now just by saying that. So in case it does end up happening this way, I would like to send u my personal apology in advance. laugh_out_loud!

  • oh..meow-mix, that has happened to my little brother, and it is really devasting to my older brother and me, who has challenged every rule in the universe according to him.
i have no problem with the way i have lived my life, and it really kills me to have this little shit pushing this crap at me.  me and my older bro would both like to take him out.  grin  nothing worse than a reformed anything.  i quit smoking, and don't like it a lot, but don't push my ways on people.  i don't like people smoking in my house, that's about it.

  • THAT sucks PAM!!!!  I agree with kitty, an ex-smoker is the same as a "born again" laugh_out_loud  They need to keep their opinions to themselves!!
  • I don't believe in ex-smokers!! I think there're only temporarily non-smoking! lol I don't know people who really gave up this habit! My brother's tried several times, but fails! My close friend's planning to have a baby...she understands how bad it will be, all effects and that she must quit it, but she still does nothing!

  • lol!!! Temporarily non-smoking, I love it!!!
  • U r so right about that temporarily non-smoking statement phibbie. I quit when I was pregnant with my son, but 2 days after he born, I was right back 2 smoking again & have been ever since. I am only 32yrs. old, but have been a smoker 4 almost 20 of those yrs. EEEK!

  • Let me put back on my psychologist's hat.  I used to work with some addictions, so I know a little bit about the subject.  If she quit smoking, then there is a good chance she picked up another habit somewhere else.  For example, people who stop smoking often start over eating. (People who stop over eating may start shopping too much.  People who stop shopping too much may pick up gambling! lol)  Folks, life is a big game of Whack A Mole!

  • wow why does it seem like what ever is going on in my life apeers on tghis site? my life partner had emergency heart surgery this week and of course for now is not smoking. i am reallly proud of her but i was not ready to stop and everyone is coming down on me to do it too. no one understand the pressure i was under all week not knowing what was going on! i wasn't in a hospital were they didn't let you smoke i was driving to and from and up all night worrying so smoked more that normal and now i am suppose to quit cool turkey and it's HELL any advice would be appreciated thanks all

  • Hi Mam,

I went to see the Doc last week, and while i was there i couldn't believe what i asked him!! I asked him if there was any new stop smoking drugs on the market. As soon as i asked him, I'm thinking to myself..."who are you kidding asking that question"! Like i am gonna quit. That was just a case of playing the good patient.

He did give me a pamphlet on a new quit smoking aid on the market. I have yet to even peek inside. As soon as i got home i slung it on the dining room table and have dusted around it! I have yet to even glance at it!

However, since you asked i did pull it out so i could tell you the name. Its called Chantix and though i have not read the booklet yet...i have seen commercials on this product. There is supposedly nicotine blockers in the brain and prevent desire to smoke.

You might want to check it out and ask your doc about it. Unless i brave it first....when and if i do i will let you know!!!

    Lips
  • you know i asked about that ans was told they are going to pull it off the market because people are having horrible i mean horrible night mares from it??? i cann't imagine that but if anyone has tired it i would like to know but thanks lips

  • Oh wow thanks for the input......may not be a good product if thats the case. But many meds have side affects. Just depends on how common they are.

I guess time will tell.....beside i think i will wait til the end of the year to quit smoking. Plenty of time to hear feed back.

  • Oh Tony:
I wish you the best of luck. I like your approach, going it at your own pace.  Perhaps thats the ticket to success.  I know cold Turkey is out for me. I dont know how people do that.  :-\
Keep us updated on how it is going, and I will keep good thoughts for you.

                                                                                  PMM

  • well, i smoke ultra lights and it's the same as a regular i wish you luck but i am having a hell of a time not smoking the only time i don't smoke is when i am in bed so maybe i should just stay in bed for a few days and pray for the best

  •   I read that people who are trying to quit should try to sleep as much as possible the first few days.
Don't know how true it is, but it sounds good to me.  Anything to get thru those first terrible days.
I myself can never make it thru the third day.  That is always my breaking point.

                                                                                      PMM

  • well i had two yesterday and one the day before telling myself i can do it and only having one when i really really cann't stand it but today it is really bad i have four left and refuse to but any more so i know once two four are gone that's it so i am really trying not to smoke them i need all the help i can get i know that but after reading above and hearing about ex smokers and born again's i think i will really be in trouble cause i'll end up being both!! no one will want to be around me

  • Hey PMM, I think that your friend my act that way, for one of many reasons, either beacuse she cares and her intentions are good. Or maybe she thinks that by saying those things, or sending you pictures, that you might realize she is right and that you really SHOULD quit. Maybe she figures if she can do it, then so can you given the right persuasion. OR, maybe now that she doesn't smoke anymore...you guys really DO STINK, from what I hear from my friends and family I smell like smoke all the time...I don't notice it, but everyone else sure does.....And one more theroy....maybe you guys smoking around her is making her want to cave so she lashes out, I do hear it is really hard to quit smoking when you are around people who do......I think you should talk to her and get the reason from her directly, and then let her know how her comments make you feel!!!

  • Great Advice exclamation!  Very good Points Satansmuff. I appreciate it.  smiley

(And I have no doubt that people who smoke do stink to people that dont.) LoL

                                                                      PMM

  • Here is the deal.  People point at people smoking who themselves are downing gallons of icecream.  People point at people downing gallons of icecream who themselves are shop-a-holics.  People point at shop-a-holics who themselves are smoking three packs a day.  It's a wild cycle.  And the reason I am a libertarian.  This is why the good Lord said not to worry about the splinter in your neighbor's eye when you may have a log in your own.

damn...change the addictions a little, and there's my life in a nut shell.
    and i am talking nut..
  • Nalgenie.......if we are honest, I would say that would be true for us all!  We all do our fair share of putting a bit of FUN into disFUNctional!

  • gotta love it exclamation!!!

DisFUNctional.............and if u drop the "N" that's what happens when you things don't go quite our way!!
  • my partner suffered monday night a hearthattack at 47 years

probably will be next ex-smoker,depends what he love more life or ciggares

is ok now but still in hospital

  • Cut them out of your life. You don't need that kind of negativity. I guess her parents didn't tell her that quitting's for losers!

  • Hey guys,  I had to weigh in on this.   I totally agree about the reformed this or that are usually a pain in the ass and also preachy,  which nobody really likes.   We are all old enough  and know what is and isn't good for us at this point.  I'm not going to preach, but......as someone who has been in the medical/respiratory  field for 25 years,  I will reiterate that this shit kills.   If you want to f***  up your body/health,  be my guest,  that's your right. Just be considerate of those who don't smoke as the second hand smoke is very toxic,  especially to kids and it isn't good for pets either.

  • Yes bongo I agree with you... Smoking is very unuseful and toxic thing for ourselves and for others.

And I hope that will stop smoking one day angel)).

  • dont smoke cigarets , smoke weed laugh_out_loud
