Our mayor just closed all Minnesota schools for Monday.
Why? Our regular temp, not including windchill, is forecasted to be -30 to -40.
My son doesn't have to go to school but he works outside that night from 4 -9pm. He works at a grocery store bringing in carts.
On a side note: I did move here from Hawaii.

I can't even imagine air that cold. Your son needs those pocket warmers to put in his gloves, coat, boots and anywhere else he can think of. I've used those and they really last for hours and hours. Please tell me you didn't move from Hawaii by choice. There must have been some reason you left paradise.

Thanks froggy. I hadn't even thought about the hand warmers.
Son is sweating before we leave the house. Layers, thermal underwear, ski mask, hat, gloves, thick socks.
Not by choice, job transfer, although, it did get kind of boring with no change in temps...ever. Also, once you drive around the island a few times, it's a been there, done that feeling. We never even bothered to go to another island. -

We have the same terrible weather here Gabby. We just got 10 inches of snow in the last two days with more on the way. Temps have been dipping below zero and it is unbearable to be outside. I made sure to stock up on everything because going outside is a major production between shoveling snow, heating the car, facing the cold and driving on ice and snowy roads. I wish it would just let up. I can't remember the last time we have had weather this bad for so long.
Omg your poor son! I don't know how he can work outside in this. Let's hope the stores are somewhat empty so he won't have to retrieve too many carts. And you poor dear coming from Hawaii to the brutal Midwest.........sigh.

Stay warm lips.
Stocking up is a good idea. Our power went out for 4 hours yesterday. Actually 4,000 customers were without power. I am shocked I didn't get cold during that time.
I hope the store is slow because I would bet my bottom dollar most people will leave their carts by their car...ya know, to cold to push it into the cart corral....leave it to the poor skinny teen. -

Aside from Hawaii Minnesota transfer, I think that I would never get bored from having a summer whole year As for extremely cold weather, at the moment, we get around 5-10 degrees (Celsius), so it is not much of a winter. Although I can remember it hit -20 (and that's without the wind chill effect).

My son had to work outside from 3 - m. A lady felt sorry for him and went to Caribou, brought him back a large hot chocolate. -

School closed again tomorrow. That is 3 days this winter. A record for our district.
Temps expected to be...oh..around... -40
My son had to work outside again tonight, for 5 hours. Poor kid worked 5 hours when the temp was -57. His store thanked him by giving him a $5 gift card. 5 hours outside at this temp and he makes $7.75/hr. I gotta hand it to him for hanging in there. I'm sure many kids would have said 'forget it', I quit.
A lady customer felt so sorry for him, she drove to Caribou (no drive-through), went in, ordered him a large hot chocolate, and drove it back to him. Those acts of kindness go a long way.
I have a hard time enjoying staying in by the cozy fireplace. I just keep thinking of the poor animals, especially the deer and their little spindly legs. -

Your son could have suffered frost bite working outside in those temps and to give him a $5 gift certificate is an insult. Thank heavens for small mercies - what a kind and thoughtful act from the lady with the hot chocolate.
I'm amazed it's still bitterly cold Gabby - they've stopped reporting your weather on the news now. I hope the temps improve soon. -

Got about an inch of ice here today and finally got power back on. And as soon as it comes back on i slipped and busted my butt from being blinded by the light
I got some pretty wicked pics to share. Just need to upload them. I was driving around trying to find a store that was open and had to literally drive under a tree. Was pretty cool -

Oh blue that is awful. I read about the horrible storms there and the damage it had caused. Saw a video of a restaurant I visited along the sea coast in Plymouth that is completely destroyed after the breaker wall broke. Really made me sad to see the destruction in that area.
[/quote]
That is sad Lips - especially when you have fond memories of the place.
It really makes me sad to see the weather reports... It seems as nature wants to tell us something. I hope it's not payback time just yet!
I think you're right Lootva. Nature is telling us something.

Tuesday night at 9:15pm with our temp at -23. My 13yr old announced he really wished he had gum for school. Hmmm, run him to the gas station or stay warm and watch Housewives of Beverly Hills.
Fine. I will take you but I only want to be gone 5 minutes. I told him he could run in by himself. Neither of us wore coats and I had on my daughters ugly furry slippers.
Drove up the street, around the corner and..... car died. Crap.
My husband had to get up at 1am for work and I didn't want to wake him.
I turned off the car, waited 2 minutes, turned it on and was able to drive 2 1/2 house lengths before it stopped again.
Told my son to get in the drivers seat, press the brake and put it in neutral and I would push. Ugghhh, the snow and ice only rocked the car. All this coatless and in ugly slippers and I did not have the heat on, thought it would conserve something.
47 minutes later of stopping, waiting, driving 20ft, over and over. We made it home.
Car is 1 year old and the transmission is being replaced.
