Hiya Guys and Dolls,
I am absolutely petrified. I am hoping someone can help me or shed some light on what to do. There is a noise coming from somewhere late at night. It is a critter either in the walls or the attic. Now i am afraid of even a mouse. But this is not a mouse. I can here it chewing and literally clicking as it walks across the ceiling above me.
I can not tell if it is in the walls or attic. But it is BIG. Last night i heard shredding of paper that makes me think whatever it is, they are making a nest. I do not know what to do. Nor know what it is. It only comes out at night. During the day there is not a peep of a sound.
I am hoping someone can offer a suggestion as to what it could be and what i can do. If it is a rat i will die omg i will die. But i am thinking it sounds bigger than that. Any clues as to what could be lurking and what i can do please advise.

I don't think it is rats after reading the link on raccoons. It basically said that rats "scurry" across the room. This is definitely clicking across the floor like paw with claws. I don't know how i get in these predicaments.
I just hope it doesn't run in the house some where. I will think i will definitely have to call an exterminator to get to the bottom of it.
I wonder if the critter leaves during the day? I would think so to eat!

Lips, this really does sound as if it's a rather large rat. Rats that are large don't scurry because of their size. It is possible that it could be a raccoon as well. Your best bet and a more inexpensive one is to check it out for yourself. Go up in the attic (as scarryas it may be) and see what kind of bedding it has made for itself. If it is a rat and making the shredding noise then it is most likely making a nest, which means more rats to come. The mothballs is an excellent solution. They don't care for the smell and it will drive them away. Rat poison is also a great solution. Just make sure you get something that will take care of it then and there and not one that lets them eat and go someplace else to it's demize or you will end up with it decesing in your wall (very bad odor and a major mess to get it out). If it does turn out to be a raccoon the mothballs will have no affect and you will need to find the entry and seal it off. I hope this helps some.

Either a pigeon or birdie in your chimney or under your roof slates.. OR a gat dern Squirrell!!!
A friend once was on the porch and the gat dern Squirrelly ran up and stole his nuts, and those suckers be hiding their nuts everywhere too.. once this shed we had while in minnesota got bumped and ill be a dchuck chuck if 100 nuts didn't come rolling out like a loose slot machine from off the roof, raining NUTS!!!
I hope you do find the culprit.. meantime, it's probably scarey -

It's a raccoon,
Had the same problem last year and put a Ultra sonic sound device
that literally drive them from your attic. You can get it at Home depot,
Lowe's. Remove any limbs, or shrubs that allow access to upper part of
your house. there's a opening or hole in the soffit, plug it.
Spray Raccoon repellent around the hole you plugged
That worked for me.
Did not have to kill any critters -

Well that is just it..........i don't know what to think. I have not heard it since. Now my mind is racing with it. Did "it" have babies and laying low or am i just sleeping through the noise.
It is late at night here now and i am thinking about it like crazy listening to every single noise.
But will definitely take some of these suggestions.

Okay, lips- update? did you GET it? is it still there.
I had mentioned the mouse in the bathroom. Today in my bedroom I went to grab for the giant hershey candy bar I had started a few days ago. It was sitting on the table next to my bed. I had to throw it out. Every piece had teeth marks in it. Not mine. Not any persons. Looked like little fang marks.
Dam-n-ed it all! Lost my chocolate! I hope it's got a big little belly ache! -

Omg chilly i would freak out. It prolly had a choco party while you were asleep.
Well the update is this........
It's really weird, i heard a stampede of some type of critter/critters running across the ceiling that one night. I did check outside to see if was any tracks. There was none. I have not heard a single solitary peep since that night.
Maybe i am fooling myself but i am hoping IT came in that night for shelter and took off and didn't come back. If i do hear it again i will definitely try the recommendations i got here and if all else fails call an exterminator.

im glad it's gone Lips, it is scarey when you have no idea what on earth it is!!
I keep having this re-accurring noise always in the middle of the night it's driving me NUTS... the noise is like the sound of when you close your micro-wave door its been doing it every night for months always around maybe midnight to 1 am..as i'm laying there my mind gets crazy with "what the hell is it?".. maybe its a big mouse and they have learned how to use the micro-wave to warm up the food they eat, sometimes i'll keep sniffing to make sure i don't smell micro-wave popcorn, that would really confirm my suspicions, i'm afraid to get out of my bed to check, i might interupt their dinner!
seriously i wish i could figure out the noise... -

As luck would have it, I've got enough hearing loss where I don't hear too many noises at night (or any other time of day, lol).
But I do know that many appliances cycle and when the switch trips, it can sound like a snap, a click, or a small bang. And in the quiet of the middle of the night, it can resound around and seem louder than what you hear in the daytime. Anything electric can do this.
I'd been wondering for some time about a clicky noise in the kitchen that I'd hear every once in awhile. I narrowed it down to the area around the stove. Just the other day discovered that the burners on the glasstop cycle on and off while they maintain the heat, and that was the clicky noise. It happened just as the burner turned red again, and again when it turned off.
Hopefully you'll figure it out! -
