  • Hiya Guys and Dolls,

I am not quite so sure that i agree with police that have to make a certain quota by the department. Couldn't that in a way lead to corruption? Or do you think that by making a their quota they are keeping an eye on their community?

I am not sure about other departments or police force in other countries but in the US there is departments that push police officers to write tickets and must meet the number of tickets that are required,

Now as person who wants to protect your job, maybe some would be more inclined to write the most trivial ticket or find fault in a citizen that is not really there.

Do you think this is something that should not be in a departments policy?

  • Good question Lips.

I think every jobs follow goals and expectations and I can understand if it's the case but isn't less crimes should be their first goal? so why make their ticket number high?
There has been so many incidents on police quota in NY and L.A for example and so many citizens suffered and reported receiving tickets wrongly although they were denied and explained otherwise.
Their first priority should be look out for their community without any pressure of reaching the goals because doing so they may not have clear mind of seeking for the justice and what's more it may lead to corruption.

  • In the UK, they have to meet quotas but more for solving crime rather than writing tickets.

I think it can lead to false reporting and even wrong convictions.  It's definitely a bad thing in my opinion.

  • I had this same thought, it was something we only joked about.. and we DID mention it to the to police men in TWO cars that wrote us EACH a J-Walking ticket.. here's my story..

On a small street in Ontario, Calif. there was 4 of us walking to the corner store which was across a small street from my home. As we stepped into the street maybe about 5 steps into the the crosswalk the light turned turned yellow so we all did a light jog to make it across. We got across and almost into the parking lot of the store when 2 police cars pulled up.. Turned on sirens.on us.. mmhmm.. and stopped us, had us get against the car, questioned us about our names and where we lived, checked us for warrants, then gave us each a jwalking ticket.. after the tickets were given, we joked and asked then did they make their quota.. you trying to win the wide screen tv.. or dvd or something.. we were only kidding.. but now i bet it it was no joke.. 4 JWalking tickets @ 400.00 a piece.. wow

So i DO beleive they go for quotas.. and possibly win prizes or cash money for the most tickets given lol

  • I think there are plenty of events in the streets so the officers won't have to punish innocent people just to make their quotas.

  • I agree that there are more important issues that need attention. Quotas make no sense to me.

  • Well, I have heard they don't have a quota, but be assured, the money they get from the tickets, provides them their cars, paychecks and other "Extras" and so while there's no "Offical" quota, you can bet they will write a ticket so as to pad the coffers.

  • Sneered the guy: Oh, sure nab me for speeding...must have to make your quota huh?
Replied the cop: Oh, we don't have quotas anymore. I'm free to give out as many as I want now smiley
