Racial Profiling

Hi Members,

Illinois is passing a new law that allows police officers to stop any driver that they feel looks "suspicious" and ask them for papers to show they are here legally. I am not sure how i feel about this.

In one respect i think it can lead to police brutality. To judge someone primarily on their looks seems racist in itself. On the other hand if there is just cause for suspicion  without this law there is not much a police officer can do.

I am not certain i like the idea. What is your views on this and does your state allow this?

I think it is somewhat of an invasion whether they are legal or not we are still USA land of the free and oportunity.
But if you have broke the law and have come her illegally then i see they do have a right but not by "suspicious looks", a person dressed in complete lawyer or doctor attire can be a lawbreaker, but he would get away... why? They aren't looking for that.. they are looking for what exactly, what is suspicious looks?.. Yes it is racial and profiling, i'd be insulted if i got pulled over for the color of my skin or the clothes i was wearing, or maybe im riding with alot of family members.

I'd like to know what they consider as suspicious looks, or what looks suspicious as far as them being able to ask for papers.

In Arizona that passed that law as well Lips...I don't agree with it because, how does someone look suspicious?!? Because they look hispanic? That is ridiculous in my opinion.

ITS WRONG! ALL WRONG!

AZ recently passed a law that has started quite an uproar. The AZ law does not allow law enforcement to pull someone over because they look like they could be illegal. What it does require is that you have valid, government issued ID. Law enforcement can only ask for the legal ID if you have been legally stopped for something else such as speeding, running a red light, trespassing, etc.

I have always carried a valid license since I always thought it was a law to carry a license while driving. My kids have always had an ID if they didn't have a license because they needed it for various things like getting in a movie, or discounted tickets.

California has been a very strong vocal opponent of the AZ law threatening various boycotts/sanctions but if anyone  looks, they would find that Ca has had a similar law in effect for several years.

AZ has been begging the Feds for border control help for many years with no result. This law is what has happened after many years of the Feds failing to assist with the problem. Many people that would ordinarily never support such a law are supporting it now because of the lack of federal action and the many many violent crimes including murder, kidnapping, smugglers carjacking each other on freeways in the middle of the city during high speed chases in order to "steal" the immigrants from each other which they then hold for ransom, resulting from the illegal immigration problem.

Additional racial Profiling may or may not result from the law - law enforcement officials are being trained to prevent this, but it will occur - most likely from those officers who are already guilty of profiling including some very high placed officials. 

i have been pulled over many times some at gun point made to take off shirt socks shoes right on the spot  as im hand cuffed made to sit on the curb after 1 or 2 hours my car completly tore up let go with out a ticket or explanation why.
profiling is wrong this is also has happen to me walking its wrong the fact is that no matter what law is or is not passed it will continue to happen i live in southern calif its the way thing are one here

Totally wrong!!! If they have that kind of time and money, why don't they stop the drivers who are text  messaging while driving instead!!! I dislike when I see those dorkies who are oblivious and bling-bling while driving. I certainly think it is-Racial Profiling what they are doing.

It's definitely discrimination on some level that's for sure.  I can "look suspicious" when I walk through customs but only because I am made to feel guilty even though I am not.  I blush and get very nervous and for no reason either.  The same applies when coppers drive in front, behind or past me.  I feel guilty and yet I am not - and I probably look it too.  There is no just cause to stop me either just because I "may" look suspicious.  

It is totally outrageous and very very wrong.

You remind me of my best friend. She also gets nervous and turns red! In January she went through customs in London and was randomly pulled out of the line to be questioned. She was there on vaca to spend time with her boyfriend in Plymouth.

Security grilled her for 15 minutes and the more questions they asked the more uncomfortable she became! She said that because of that, its why they grilled her even more.

She was asked everything from .....where did you meet him....how do you know him...the repercussions if she stays and does not leave....to what kind of job does he have!!

She said that by the time she got out of the airport she was a wreck! It is a world wide epidemic and i suppose we can thank 911 for that.

I was pulled out of the line once as i was boarding the plane to Vegas. I was padded down and searched. It is very embarrassing, as i finally did board the plane i had  people look at me up and down like i was a criminal!

Oh my Lips - I really feel for your friend and for you.  I can understand how awful it must have been for both of you.  How embarrassing too and yet neither of you had done anything wrong.  It's strange how they manage to pick on the wrong person consistently. 

I have to say, it puts me off going anywhere abroad.  The last time I went to Spain and the British side of customs/passport control was absolutely awful.  They even xray your shoes now.  Dreadful.

I can see this new law in Illinois creating many problems and I have no doubt in my mind that somebody will lose a life because of it and not because they were guilty in any way.

I had a problem once on a vacation with friends, we had driven to Mexico, you're fine driving into Mexico from the USA, but on the way out you are stopped at the border. The family i was with were white my skin being somewhat tanned and my hair being dark in color they thought this family was smuggling me from Mexico. I did not have an ID nor my birth certifcate with me, i was only 13 years old. They family and myself were scared to death, after about 30 minutes of questions of answering "whats my parents name?" "where was i born?" "the capitol of the USA" "what schools did i attend?" and alot of other questions we finally were able to go across. I had complete proper english and no knowledge of Mexico other then what we visited with that it wasn't easy convincing them.

Pull 'em over and ask for ID...no problem!

I signed up for a free Chik-fil-A sandwich online and was told I might have to show an ID when I pick it up.  (Making sure people aren't getting more than one.)  Now, if Chik-Fil-A can ask for an ID, why can't the police looking for crinimals?

The fact is the Illegals have turned the border towns along the USA-Mexico line into a Hell Hole.  Lock 'em up.  Send them back.

I think your missing the whole point here. Police are allowed to randomly pull over people simply based on their looks. Its not to confirm a chicken sandwich order. In my opinion that is pure BS and breeds police brutality and racism. The only true Americans in this country are the American Indians who got the shaft.

The US is based off of nothing but immigrants. We are all descendants of another country. Our ancestors came to America for one reason, a better life. Why some cultures that live here seem to think they have more rights then others is beyond me.

Quite frankly to say that Mexicans have turned the borders into hell holes is VERY racist! You have obviously not lived in Mexico nor know the conditions for which many of them live. The conditions for many is beyond the poverty level. They come to the US to survive. Some have risked their lives and died to get across the borders just to make money to feed their families. Then only to be shipped back to Mexico by immigration where they lose everything they worked so hard for.

Mexicans are a gentle culture who believe in the institution of family. They do the jobs that many would never dream of doing at minimum wage. They are not afraid of hard work, or getting dirty. I live in Chicago where there is a heavy population of Mexicans. And it is far from a hell hole.

We could learn a lot from them........

So question is, who should they pull over and ask?  Will they pull some people with clean and nice look? I don't think so. They will probably stop any one who has craggy looks or not so pretty clothes...

I'm tired of the race card.  My son is a 'white boy', dresses 'normal', and drives a 'normal' kid car, but beause he has dreadlocks he's been pulled over multiple times, screamed at, and forced to 'spread 'em with his hands on the car, while both he and his car were searched.  Never a reason given for being pulled over.  So is it really racial profiling in the states?  NO.  It's APPEARANCE PROFILING.

I don't really agree with the "appearance" theory entirely, this is why; Ok your son is caucasian and seemingly "normal" (what IS normal ? It can be different for everybody) I get your point....BUT your son decided to wear his hair in a VERY ethnic fashion,for the most part Dreadlocks are worn by Rastafarians who are generally black, so maybe he is getting pulled over because of his ethnic hair style and maybe the cops think he is just a very fair skinned Black guy, maybe the cops pulled him over because of the silly notion that because he wears his hair like a "lot of those pot/ganja smoking Jamaiican thugs", Who knows? For the record as a Black citizen who has a habit of "observing" people and have come to the conclusion that WE ARE BASICALLY ALL THE SAME, with a few differences, I am very tired of even hearing the phrase,"Playing the race card" It is so passe and antiquated and I feel it's basically a cop out for many who do not want to take the time to try and understand other cultures,races,ethnicities,people in general.Don't believe all the hype that a handful of misinformed hate fueled people who happen to have media power spew, I'm just saying....

I wonder what would happen if we all decided to dress the same, say like... baseball players and drive say Volvo's lol.. would dressing like a baseball player make it so it is a suspicious look for everyone dressed that way.. or would it be overlooked because baseball is part of the spirit of america? Would anyone take a second look...

I like my car kitted, lowered, tinted windows, i love my sound system that booms, i ride low and i drive with a lil gangsta lean, i wear baggy pants sometimes, wifebeaters,(tank top) with my white BK's, i work everyday and i pay my bills i respect authority and i handle my business properly, i am female.. but i be damned i am pulled over and hassled at least once a week for my appearance, never once for driving safely, never once for obeying laws and keeping it real, my point is as long as i am breaking no laws, why mess with me, i am an american who happens to like certain styles, bought all clothing at reputable stores and car accessories at reputable automobile shops... my style makes me suspicious

P.S. I even had a policeman TELL me i need to change my appearance in order to be respected. Judged by looks and not by actions.

I was living in Long Beach, CA, the officer stopped me because I had a rosary, I went to court and it was thrown out, the judge was Catholic too!  I know what it was about, DWB, driving while black, and I was in a Cadillac!  It happens so much that it has become a part of life, its wrong, and it tooks us, to make a stand!

I will come to your rescue, I think you all should Google Montbello Highschool California our American flag was taken down by the children of illegal immigrants and thought it funny to hoist up the Mexican flag on top of the American Flag then hung our American Flag upside down. I am all for a better life for all cultures and races. But......If Americans went to Mexico and we wanted to become a Mexican citizen but not do it the RIGHT way. Do you honestly think for one second that we would get healthcare over there or foodstamps or not be stopped by their police and asked if we are their illegally? Come one. The LEGAL IMMIGRANTS who came to this country and did it the right way are the ones that are more angry with the Illegals sneaking in with no intention ever of becoming American citizens. My sons Best friend is an Army Ranger btw the same one who rescued Jessica Lynch. I do not like Liars, Cheaters anyone who trys to sidestep or get one over on anyone for the sake of having a better life for their family. And what are you teaching your children it's ok to sneak around and not abide by the law because it is whats best for our family. 

EVERY race, culture, group,religion,nationality, ethnicity, has a few Azzholes who Phuck it up for everybody else!! But that DOES NOT make it right to judge the rest the same way!
Bottom line.... people are going to think WHATEVER the want to,only because it's easier and more accepted by their peers!
One day we, the HUMAN RACE, might have to finally come together without seeing differences and band together to survive because, well it's far fetched but could happen,beings from another place in the universe might swoop down and decide they want to take the planet we ALL call home and give us the boot....then what will we all do....hmmm?

But riding down the street maybe wearing a certain attire, or skin color, or just looking like you don't belong here in this country is not a reason to invade a persons choices of our american right to live our lives in peace, or ANYONES right to live in this world.

Kids should not necessary to be taught about any of adults being legal or illegal when they are just kids...especially in this types of matter...all they need to be taught is they are all equal no matter what ethics and backgrounds but just be proud of themselves and their parents!!! Beside, why should that matter anyway? I don't ever teach my kids about things that they shouldn't know. Why do you think there are so many young kids who talks racist already?
So if one's parents are pulled by just because of how they look, is it okay for that kid  to feel ashamed of or scared of? What are you suggesting to teach the kids? Judge people by their look? No one can possibly know what is like to live in this country with different race unless you are...as for me, I have worked twice harder to have equal opportunities for everything so far just because of what I am...
Talking about what happened at the high school...only brings too many episodes of dramas going on all over the world. I could also list more than enough mis-behaving actions and unfairness...
All I am trying to say is that, who are we to judge anyone? No one is perfect and what's more, no one knows what's really right or wrong!!!
Look around you...real hard, it all comes down to MONEY, now that is what I call it's wrong. If one has money,can buy a lawyer, lands without being a citizen in this country, even a citizenship.....................................

Isn't it funny HUMAN NATURE everyones opinion will change if it effects you directly. What will you do if you get in an accident or your family member is killed by an Illegal with no insurance and no drivers license.  Oh and keep in mind the laws here in California NOW are that the officer has no right to ask if you are here illegally. He can give you a ticket, but to who, who are you, where are you from? They do not even have the right to call Immigration now. How do you suppose they try to tackle this immigration problem, anyway? I didn't want to get involved, but this seems to be an illegal mexican has American rights type of arguement. We as a people all have basic rights, but when the mexican govmnt condemns america for deporting illegal mexican citizens when the Mexican government does the same and worse to central americans  in Mexico, well, that is hypocrisy. My family is Indian and I have never heard one gripe from them about "the white man". I think race is a copout, it is about legality.

Also let's remember we all have the right to our own opinions and questioning someone's intelligence because they don't agree with you is wrong. We can disagree as adults.

I guess most of you did not read last week when an Illegal Alien Mother of a 6 yr old son who was born in America, and her son died of a strange heart attack.  The mother was deported back to Mexico. She asked the Immigration department to let her come back to bury her son, they allowed her to come back for 2 weeks. That is EXACTLY why you should not raise your children in a deceptive manner. You are taking a risk that you will be deported. Again, I ask what is wrong with coming here LEGALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Or to any COUNTRY for that matter????? Every Country has Immigration laws PERIOD. If your MORAL fiber is to break one law, than you have NO credibility, that you wont break another. Obviously you will drive with no license, no insurance, pay no taxes etc. There was NO AMNESTY for Irish Americans, Italian Americans, Chinese Americans who all waited in line and became AMERICAN citizens. Is there a new class of AMERICANS oh that's the class of SPECIAL AMERICANS the ones who do not have to follow the law.

Maybe you guys are right...because if the Native Americans who were minding their own business had immigration laws when strangers "foreigners" if you will barged in and just started taking over EVERY PHUCKING THING, they would not be an almost extinct race of indiginous people (meaning they were here FIRST),millions of people cut down to thousands now....thats messed up.

This has happened throughout history. Are mexicans really native mexicans or are they a spanish mix of the illegal spaniards who made their way into mexico and south american? Rome did this, Britian, basically every country ever in existence. Do you not think the Indians didn't fight over hunting grounds or sacred places?  Is all this anger getting anywhere?

I am a History buff by nature there is absolutly no VALIDITY in whos land was whos first NONE. If you read history you will find every piece of land on the globe was once someone elses. Including back to Biblical times, and how did they do that from blood always!!!!! So if you were the mightier force you fought your people died and you took the land PERIOD. You formed laws established unions why? Because you were a democracy. You had to have laws in place because other wise you would become a lawless nation. Again I ask why does anyone person,culture,race who comes to America not have to come here lawfully. WHY? Its a very simple question. When millions before followed the laws and also reaped the benefits of being here legally.

So good to here from a Native American Indian great VALID point. The Navaho the Cherokee they all fought other Indians tribes for more land. Never in History has there EVER been a time that I can reflect on that any group or culture of people did not have to fight or sacrifice to become a citizen of that land. It would be UNACCEPTABLE in any time in history and would not have been condoned. It's laughable if you think about it. I could just see another Indian tribe who just lost their loved ones in a big battle, and gained land and a new tribe who did not and were not in the fight say hey were gonna come over here and live among you guys and not risk anything or sacrifice anything to share this land with you, we are going to do our own thing and not follow your laws and our children are going to become citizens of your land, that you fought for, because the land we came from we did not like, it did not have the opportunities that this land has,  you guys don't mind do you. You guys are going to have to follow your laws and pay taxes, but we are not going to you guys are ok with that right. no problem. Oh and we are also going to fly our own Flag here in your country. That would be ok with you guys, right? Oh and if our children need healthcare and cant eat you guys are going to pay for it. I am sure the wise Shaman would say "Would you do the same for our children in the land where you came from?" No of course not, well then come on over.

I think this thread has tapped into a lot of sensitivity, primarily hitting hard home to some minorities that can relate in our country. It is one thing to discuss illegal aliens in our country but totally another to attack a certain group.

This is NOT what i expected to happen. I felt the need to defend the Mexican culture because they were pointed out and targeted. This is an open forum with people that gather from all over the world. I would hope we could respect that and embrace all cultures with a sense of respect.

Though one group was attacked, i sense that some members could relate to the attack being victims themselves at one time or another. I can not accept anyone putting down a certain culture because of a few bad apples and regard them as a whole as unjust people.

The issue at hand is about police stopping someone who looks "suspicious". It's not about spewing hate. Yes there is plenty of people in our country illegally. Yes there is laws we should all abide by. But one thing for sure.....it doesn't mean we lose our humanity and compassion for the human spirit.

I am asking anyone to post freely their thoughts, but please refrain from targeting a certain group. It is hurtful to those who are good decent people.

I guess attacking individuals on a computer forum for their opinions is fine. Honestly, I have never seen such immature comments from some adults. I suppose you can alienate others if their beliefs are different than yours or at least spew hate at them. Was everyone crying "racial profiling" after 9-11 and arabs were being detained at airports? Probably not, but I guess you can pick and choose which laws apply to whom.

Thank You Lips, i have saw this thread through with my responses about "looks" and things that happen. We know that certain styles can be directed to certain people and can be stereotyped.

But what are the "suspicious looks" that would enable a police officer to pull you over only to ask if you have papers to live in this country?
Being the police officers observation that someone just doesn't look like a legal us citizen as he quickly drove by. How is it determined, is what i want to know.
Anyone know what the checklist is?

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, HA that's why this is AMERICA. I also have not seen one comment saying I HATE THEM!! Whoever "them" would be. Yes this forum has people all over the World, and again all over the world they have Immigration Laws!!!! It makes absolutly no difference peoples opinions LAWS have passed PERIOD. Arizona, Illinois and California just deployed the National Guards to the Border. So it makes no difference what it written here the LAWS like always in every Country will prevail. No matter what anyone like,thinks or dislikes. Again, I have also not read ONE, not ONE response to say Why not become LEGAL?

No matter how much we all want to be heard, we will never agree with each other 100%...I also believe no matter what, no ones views will change. We are entitled to have our own outlook on the Legal/Illegal situation..

Good question lucky, i can only guess. Maybe its the strict laws that now prevail that only allow a certain percentage of people into our country.

Maybe it is the desperation for a better life and they risk it. It is not as easy as it was for our ancestors. The laws have made it pretty tough. I am not saying that its right that anyone comes here illegally. Just trying to answer why it happens.

When our American young men right out of highschool after losing their lives for the FREEDOM you seek and spit on as you sneek over here. And ironically your children (if not born here) will not go to war and fight nor salute that FLAG that throughout our history has meant so much, from flying on the moon to the stars and stripes song, that Flag was the only thing flying ripped and torn. So using the LOWEST estimates, the annual cost OF ILLEGAL ALIENS is $338.3 BILLION DOLLARS A YEAR!
So if deporting them costs between $206 and $230 BILLION DOLLARS, start getting rid of em'. We'll be ahead after the 1st year!!!
