  • Hi Guys and Dolls,

Its the most wonderful time of the year!!! Tis the season for random acts of kindness. I see it so much more at holiday time than any other time of the year. We have witnessed it right here at LCB!

It seems our hearts are more open and we tend to keep pent up expressions of kindness set free at holiday time. I see it everywhere. I was in the store the other day shopping when a clerk mentioned how she loved a scarf a customer had on.

The customer said she purchased it on a trip and thanked her. The customer left and 10 minutes later returned to the store. She walked up to the clerk and said....." i want you to have this". The clerk was taken back and lost for words. The customer wrapped it around her neck and said Merry Christmas and walked out.

I was so touched by this!! I have to admit i show more random acts of kindness than any other time of year. How wonderful it would be if we could do that all year long.

Do you show more acts of kindness at this time of year or see others that do?

  • Well, the "Good Acts" people commit usually happen more often now. But I am trying to break away from that..

You see, it would be like being a jerk 6 days a week and making it up by being angelic 1 day a week.

Be angelic (Or as much as you can) everyday...It's not totally possible to be such, but if you try, you do more good all year long then you could fit in 1 month. smiley

  • Ohhhh 13 my love you are preaching to the choir now!! It astounds me at the number of people who do not care!! I could go on and on with a list of stories where people just walked right on by.

I have often struggled to understand the mindset of a person like that. What is sadder is that when we do the humane thing we are considered "heros". I hardly think lending a hand to someone in need is being a hero.

I would of helped ya with that ruff and tumble buddy.......thats a guarantee!

  • 13, i will tell you a true story....i tell you this not as some kind of hero.....but part of being just plain human.

I was out shopping one day in the summer. When i ran across an elderly man, obviously disoriented. He was approaching people asking them for directions to a street. I saw each person either walk away and ignore him....say they didn't know....or cross the street to avoid him.

As i got closer to him, i could tell that this man was not of his senses. He began to walk aimlessly in desperation. I approached him and asked him if i could help. He said he was lost. I called 911 on my cell and waited with him til the police arrived. As we waited people passed by...shaking their heads. As if he was an annoyance on the street. I rememeber how angry i became. How callous and judgemental people were without knowing the circumstances.

When the police arrived, they were happy to see the man. Apparently he had left the Seniors complex and his family was worried sick about him because he suffered from alzheimers.

I am not kidding when i say not one single person would help this man. I would love to know there reasons for this.....because i just don't understand it.
  • Though this time is a special time of year to get closer to the ones we love and to feel and show that cheery spirit, I am an all year'er!
I will see something that reminds me of someone and I will buy it and give it to them just because.
I will send a card in the mail to a friend just to say hi and let them know they are special to me.
I stop and give money to the people with the signs, even if they are lying cheesy
I have seen a couple of mothers' walking in the rain and I have stopped and given them rides even if it is completely out of my way.
God has blessed me in so many ways anytime I can help, or put a smile on someones face or joy in their heart, I don't hesitate. It actually makes me feel good to see people smiling and happy and if I can play a part in that happiness, than all the better!

  • I guess you can say I help because because of my horrible child hood. You see, I was the only Puerto Rican in a very small all White town growing up. And I was dirt poor. People hated me because I was poor and Puerto Rican. My father couldn't find a job because he was from New York City and Puerto Rican. My family grew tighter than my hubby's wallet.(Chuckle) We always helped someone if they needed it, like if someone was broke down on the side of the road or something. I would ask my father why he helped them when they wouldn't give him the time of day and he always said the same thing "Don't hate people because of their ignorance, try and show them they are wrong and you will be surprised how many people will change."

When I was 17 my father had his first major heart attack, the whole community came to my house to help us. People came to mow the lawn, take my mother grocery shopping because she doesn't drive, take my father to his doctors appointments it was amazing.

I always lived by my fathers wizdom, because I help anyone and everyone that I can because I truely believe god put me here on this earth to make a change, one smile at a time.

Lori, you are special and I love you for life! And it's not about the money you gave me. It's about your heart and our several hours talk on the phone that allowed me to really connect with you.
You are stuck with me forever :-)
  • Beautiful,

I woulnd't call it stuck! I am so blessed to have you in my life now. I know that we will always be good friends for the rest of our lives, and hopefully in the future we can manage a way to actually meet in person! Can you imagine us talking in person, we would never shut up! laugh_out_loud

    Love ya!

  • Hey Gang,

This act of kindness was done by my 8 year old daughter. She has been saving every penny she earns or finds for a new bike, (Santa is going to be riding it down the drive way on Christmas day smiley...) We went christmas caroling with the girl scouts yesterday and heard one little girl say that her parents told her and her brothers that christmas was going to have come a little later because Santas sled broke down.  What really happened was an uncle stole everything they had and sold it for drug money, and both parents are unemployed right now.

My daughter came home and cleaned out her piggy bank, came down stairs and said, Mom I have over 62 dollars and if you lend me 38 dollars we can go to Dollar general and gey Kylie and her family a present. My hubby and I asked her if that is what she really wanted and she said yet, because she can still ride her old bike until she is 9 and then she will have to get an adult bike anyways because she will be to old for a kids bike.

So we got in the car and went to Dollar General, she was so excited to pick out presents. We came home and wrapped them and went to deliver them. The parents were in tears to think she gave up her bike money for their family, and were just so happy. Needless to say I have to add another 5 people for xmas dinner.

  • Like mother, like daughter! That is amazing, but with a mother like you, it sounds pretty normal kiss
    Bless her little heart!

She'll need an adult bike at 9; grin grin grin

  • LHofsdal - Wow! I'd buy your daughter a drink - Good thing I don't drink alcoholic beverages - only sodas for and from me.

I saw this kid playing basketball with a bunch of other kids...but he stood out cuz his big toe was sticking out from a hole in his shoe. I waited and after the game I asked the kid to come with me (don't worry he knew me - I was a youth group leader back then). we went to a FootLocker and I asked him what's the best pair of basketball shoes I could buy. Ironically we were the same shoe size..so when he pointed them out...I got the sales rep to grab me a pair to try on...I tried them on to make sure I had some room to grow in them (like I'm gonna grow more)...paid for them...handed them over to the kid and told him to use them well and if I ever see another kid wearing them he was gonna get a smack on the back of the head from me.

  • Yep, because at the ripe age of 9 she thinks she has entered adult hood. WOOOOO HHOOOOOOO lucky me, NOT! smiley

    LH

  • WELLLLL, THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ME, BUT I WANTED TO SHARE IT.

TODAY AS I CAUGHT A GLIMPSE OF THE NEWS, THE SHOWED A GENTLEMAN AT A GAS STATION WHO FILLED THE TANK OF 80 (STRANGERS) CARS.

I GOT TEARY EYED AND COULDN'T STOP SAYING "AHHHHH"  YOU COULD JUST TELL IT REALLY BROUGHT HIM JOY.

    JUST WANTED TO SHARE!

    SHELLI
  • Strange isin't it??

Bad news the newscamera rush to the scene and tape everything, but GOOD DEEDS?? Well, that's "Sometimes" reported.

Though that's the way it is in society...

  • That is so true, Gene!  I AM SURE the world would be a better place if the "goodness" in people were reported more often.
  • this was a great thread...thanks  grin

  • That is so true, Gene!  I AM SURE the world would be a better place if the "goodness" in people were reported more often.

I also think that goods acts should be appriciated somehow, reported everywhere! We should start propagandizing "goodness"!
As for the first lips question current time, period of the year doesn't influence my "goods acts" at all! I try to help people every time I can and they need! smiley
  • HEY phibbie,

THAT'S HOW I TRY TO BE ALSO HUN.  GRANTED I CAN BE A B@@@@ WITH A CAPITAL B!!!!  WHEN I SEE SOMEONE IN NEED, I ALWAYS HELP IF I CAN.

LIKE I ALWAYS SAY, DO UNTO OTHERS.  wink
  • Last night I played Keno at a land-based casino for the first time. Something I would have never had done had it not been for online casinos introducing me to slot and keno play. Prior I was stuck to the table games. Anyway I actually did pretty well...and realized u really need to have patience playing Keno...i ended up playing for 12 hours...but the good thing is you really don't need to do much other than push that spin button and some times changing the bet here and there. it allowed me to look around and observe people while not ever having to lose a beat playing. There was this guy about 3 machines to my left..everytime i would hear his machine make a winning sound..he would cashout get the print voucher...walk over to the voucher redemption machine...and come back to the same video machine...he did this for at least 4 hours...and when i looked at him, he would look back at me with this "mind your own business kinda look"...so i would just turn away...my curiousity got to me though...and wanted to see the amounts he was cashing out at so i would get up and stretch everytime he got up and went to the voucher redemption maching..32 credits (25 cent machine)...then 28 credits...then 38 credits...and so out of the corner of my eye I was trying to see what he was depositing...$5 everytime...and so my mind began to work and calculated...$5 = 20 credits/quarters. I understood his strategy where he would pocket anything he made over $5...and then playout the $5 again. But unfortunately I didn't agree with it as it would only work if you won all the time..which you know we don't. At the time I had 2800 credits, and so when he went off to the redeem another print voucher...I put a $20 bill across the buttons...when he came back he took the $20 and put it his pocket and deposited his $5 and started playing....

lol..no...he looked around and i told him that it was from me...he came over and told me he really appreciated...and i told him that i hope he wasn't offended by me when i keep looking over and i explained that i was just curious and puzzled. he explained his strategy as i had thought...and so i asked him to sit down...and he came to soda's CLASS305 - The Art of Keno.

He ended up winning that night and when he was through he gave a me squeeze on the shoulder and told me to remain cool...was that cool or what?

  • Cool story Soda! That is great, not only did you make his day, you had someone to chat with while playing. I am sure he did appreciate what you did for him.

    Stay "Cool" Soda, Happy Holidays.
    LH

  • soda...you are a cutie.  if i was with you, i would have first peed my pants laughing at him when i saw the vouchers, then i would have talked to him if he would still speak to
    me  grin grin grin

    nice story!

  • the openess, caring etc for the season is for good and bad i think. the bad part beeing, why arent ppl as caring as they get just cause theres a "santa" good part, is the caring, yes ppl tend to open thiere hearts for a moment. i just wish more ppl would do more often. i dont need a holiday to open my heart, its wideopen.

hope it makes any sense (scuse my english)

  • yes...complete sense...and..there are more..i think its because they have better things to do than to worry about seeking media attention that we don't know they are there....but they are...perfect example...like you...i never heard you were that person until now..

  • it makes all the sense in the world Mondo..beautifully put.

i didn't realize you were such a softie too.  so nice to see.  grin

    happy holidays  Nal  cool

  • I respect such random acts of kindness, I think it helps our people to grow up mentally!
