  • Hiya Members,

Northwestern University in Chicago is a highly respected college. But they have come under a shroud of controversy for a Human Sexuality class. Professor Baily held a special after class presentation "Networking for Kinky People"

In his class there was a live sex act performed between a man and a woman! Here is what the Professor had to say for offering such a class:

"The demonstration, which included a woman who enjoyed providing a sexually explicit demonstration using a machine, surely counts as kinky, and hence, as relevant. Furthermore, earlier that day in my lecture I had talked about the attempts to silence sex research, and how this largely reflected sex negativity ... I did not wish, and I do not wish, to surrender to sex negativity and fear."

Needless to say this has put many people up in arms over this. Most people said that sex is a private experience and this was a indecent class and nothing more than pornography. A small majority said that this class was optional and students should be allowed to make their own choices.

Do you think that Professor Baily was unleashing inhibitions of students and this class was appropriate in surrendering the negativity and fear? Or is he a whack job that is using this as a tool for his kinky ways?

  • You would be surprised at the offerings at some Universities in the name of education.  But, they've had these "sex" classes since the 1970's, so this is nothing new.  The teacher probably got a special grant from the US government to hold his lectures!

  • I think that's appalling.  I think about Timothy Leary who advocated the use of amphetamines and barbiturates back in the 1960's.  Scary thing is he was a psychologist and hoardes of people followed him.  This is no different.

  • It's definitely out of the ordinary and I don't really know what to make of it. Did students know the "curriculum" when they enrolled in the course? If they did I'm sure they probably didn't intend to toss their inhibitions aside but instead wanted to watch a live show.

"Networking for Kinky People"? Let's call it what it is, "Start Small, Break Into The Porn Industry in a Classroom".  laugh_out_loud

  • great topic, guess the mind doc, hasn't seen this thread yet. Ah, he's in A.C. anyway.  As long as the students we're aware of what was going to take place in the classroom, the prof. didn't do anything wrong.
As stated, are individuals only advanceing their "kinkiness" , sure that applies to a few students. However, if there is a young couple, male or female, that believe they have a problem when it comes to sex, and if the class is taught properly, doesn't one want to believe they'll be able to over-come their issues, and have a happier sex life, down the road?  I'm day-dreaming a bit now, but what if a male and female meet, go out over a period of time, fall head over heels with each other, and when it comes to the bedroom one says, well I don't do that. The problems associated with that, well I'm not going to start. But could a healthy sex-ed class, as an adult, avoided that? Possibly!
Myself growing up, being from the 60's-70's, we went to the bedroom first, tried that out for compatability, and then worked on the rest of the issues.
I assume, and thats all it is, not having kids, that the bedroom thing, only got looser, as time went by. It sure does save a major headache, down the road, to have that issue, behind a couple. Yes, I've been down this road.
                                                Rico

  • "academic freedom"  -  not much is taboo in a lot of colleges as to curriculum.  I took a class taught by the French department, even though I didn't speak any french, it was a senior level course that needed another warm body to make the class.  We read "The Story of O" among other things.  All kinds of pornographic French novels.  That was the first time I heard about all kinds of stuff, from b*tt plugs to wiping your b*tt with a goose (they had no toilet paper back in the day...)  It was "Sex and Violence in French Literature"... we also had to read "The One Hundred and Twenty Days of Sodom and Other Writings" where I got another eye-full.  But, alas, no live demonstations, only discussions.

  • I guess the real question here is if this professor was really being on the up and up is are we too sexually negative and fearful.

That is a loaded question and food for thought. But are we really being negative to keep our intimacy private? I once had a lengthy debate about this topic. We live in a world that dates way back that intimacy is a very private thing. But if it is a natural act and desire then why is it taboo in most circles to even discuss.

I am just playing devils advocate here and i for one am very private. But could this professor be on to something here and try to break the negative connotations that sex often has?

  • Well, we do seem to be the only animals who have so many inhibitions in the sexual arena.

I found out from Manswers on Spike tv that chimpanzees have prostitution!  Instead of 1 1/2 times per hour of having sex, if the male offers food to the female, she'll put out 3 1/2 times an hour.  didn't learn that one in college.

  • Now that is what i call stamina!! Never knew chimpanzees were such a wild bunch!
  • Isn't this interesting. Lips, Chilly if I'm hearing you right, you believe sex is still in the closet, is that true? Since the 60's n 70's, I believe it's come way out of the closet, as in brakeing down the closet door!
Agreed before that time, I would say yes, it was a difficult topic to discuss, anywhere, be it with your priest, or even a close friend. Now, well maybe you two don't get out that much, ( I'm jokeing) but sex is quite a public topic, and has been for awhile,. Look at  TV. Ricky an Lucy use to have to sleep in seperate twin beds. Now two strangers lock up in a bedroom, and theres no imagination left, cause you see what's going on. Anyway, just my opinion, right. Be good you two,, I know I'm trying.
                                                           Rico

  • Hi Rico,

Agreed we have come a long way since the dawn of the age of Aquarius. But what i'm talking about is what this professor did in his class room with live sex. We may have come far as a society but for most we are not quite ready for this.

And in many ways it proves this professor's theory that sex is considered negative and fearful. Everyones first reaction to this was it is PORN! It is nasty, dirty and filthy!

It is one of two things here either this professor is on to something or somewhere a line has to be drawn when it comes to this type of open display.

  • OK, let's back up to your first post, and my first reply. I'm sticking by my first reply, for now, lol. So let's pick your post apart, a bit. I havn't had a chance to view this prof. Baily. ( wonder if he might be on YOUTUBE?)  Anyway, we might be able to get an idea, if he is a wack job, by listening to him. See how he presents himself. You know clean cut, suit an tie, vs. long haired, jeans, has a joint hangin out of the side of his mouth.
You  stated, this was an after class presentation, with a name, 'Networking for kinky people". Also stated, is his desire to remove fear and negativity towards peoples way of thinking, in regards to sex. to continue, the class had a man an woman having sex, and a women useing a machine. Which the professor claims is kinky. Myself, I don't. A machine (sex machine) is only an upscale model of a vibrator, which are all over the place. nothing unusual there. The same with the act of sex itself, nothing unusual there, everyone appeared to consent.
After reading it again, a time or two, the professor might have taken a couple of steps backward. Anyway, finishing, everyone was an adult, it's college, they we're told what was going to happen, I would enjoy being able to view prof. Baily somehow, like an interview, or small lecture. Get a better idea, of where he is coming from.
                                                Rico

  • I soooo enjoy your open minded debate ethics rico!! Bravo to you and i will see if can find some more info on this dude!

But see you opened a whole new can of worms here. You are suggesting if he wears jeans and has long hair then we can't trust his integrity. Thats a whole new debate!!

p.s and if he does have a joint hanging out of his mouth who is to say he doesn't have glaucoma  wink

    Lips
  • lololol, true, you know what I'm getting at though. Your good, Rico

  • Here he is...............

And here is what he had to say in the aftermath.........

    J. Michael Bailey, the Northwestern University professor at the center of recent controversy over a live sex act in his classroom, apologized Saturday for allowing the demonstration to occur.

“I apologize,” he writes. “As I have noted elsewhere, the demonstration was unplanned and occurred because I made a quick decision to allow it. I should not have done so.”

He said he was surprised by the public outcry over the after-class incident in the Ryan Family Auditorium, where a man used a high-powered sex toy on his girlfriend in front of 100 students.

“During a time of financial crisis, war, and global warming, this story has been a top news story for more than two days,” Bailey wrote in his statement. “That this is so reveals a stark difference of opinion between people like me, who see absolutely no harm in what happened, and those who believe that it was profoundly wrong.”

His statement comes two days after Northwestern’s president, Morton Schapiro, said he was launching an investigation into the after-class live sex demo, saying he was disturbed, troubled and disappointed. Many alumni and parents have also let the university know they were unhappy about the act.

Bailey said that while he regretted allowing the Feb. 21 sex toy demonstration he also does not believe those who were offended made a good case for why the act should not have been allowed.

“Those who believe that there was, in fact, a serious problem have had considerable opportunity to explain why: in the numerous media stories on the controversy, or in their various correspondences with me,” the statement reads. “But they have failed to do so. Saying that the demonstration ‘crossed the line,’ went too far,’ ‘was inappropriate,’ or ‘was troubling’ convey disapproval but do not illuminate reasoning.”

He adds that if he was grading the arguments against allowing a man to use a custom high-powered sex toy to bring his naked girlfriend to orgasm before 100 students, “most would earn an ‘F.’”

“Offense and anger are not arguments,” he wrote. “But I remain open to hearing and reading good arguments.”

Nearly 600 students registered for Bailey’s popular “Human Sexuality” course this quarter. About 100 attended the after-class, optional, non-graded seminar on kink and fetish. Four members of Chicago’s fetish community spoke about their lifestyle and two, Jim Marcus and Faith Kroll, volunteered to prove the veracity of some controversial elements of female orgasm. Bailey hesitated, than agreed, and Kroll stripped down on stage and allowed Marcus to penetrate her with the custom made power saw with a phallus in place of a blade.

Bailey described student feedback as positive, and many students on campus also said they didn’t think the display was in poor taste.

Bailey said in Saturday’s statement that he is working with undergraduate students to set up a “high-level discussion and debate” about the demonstration.

“There are real, important issues here, including optimal limits on academic freedom, the effect of sexual attitudes on education, and sexual rights and responsibilities, among others,” he wrote. “A great university, such as Northwestern University, should be a place where people are not only free, but encouraged, to debate our most contentious issues.”

So do you believe his intentions are way ahead of what society is ready for or is he a whack job?
  • I think sex is still in the closet for a large population of the country.  Another large population of the country is quite uninhibited.  And no, I don't get out much.  Hardly at all.  Out in the country with no car and an absent spouse.  But, rico, I was a flower child, and born in 1957 so the sixties and seventies had a big impact, and well, I did take that Sex and Violence in French Literature class.  I don't think what the good professor did was wrong, but if he isn't tenured, he may have some worrying to do.  Mommy and Daddy, paying for their kids to go to Northwestern, may not be so open minded about their little Buffy and Chippy being so exposed to sex acts in their class, after school or not.

  • Lips, tell me if you read what I'm reading. I hear student approval, and some parental objections. (100% student approval). He is neat in appearance, he's responding properly to some of the criticisum.
Is he a whack job, no. Has he crossed new boundries, sure. Remembering us humans, ( not EVEN likeing the word change, as we advance in years) will balk at anything usually, out of the norm, and I hate useing that word.
I say, right on, keep up the good work.

                                              Rico
    ps, whats your feeling lips?

  • Well so much for the jeans, long hair and the dobie hanging out of the side of his mouth...lol!!! What's even funnier..the "custom made power saw with a phallus in place of a blade" now that I probably would have paid to see...lmao!!

  • vroooom vroooom!

  • lol ...chilly..I'll never think of power tools the same way!!

    vroooom vroooom!
  • u 2, chilly i'm born n jan. 57.We're damn near members of the over the hill gang, wow
    \

  • mine's Nov '57.  57 was a good model year... laugh_out_loud... Last of the hippies, born too late to fully enjoy the summer of love or get to go to Woodstock, unless we were really lucky.

I'd trust that professor more if he were a long haired hippie with a big doobie hangin' outta his mouth.  This one looks like the MAN.

  • lol, U know, at that time, I never got into the,( Peace, Luv, n spare change) thing. Don't know if I thought I was above it or over it. Hell I was born n raised n San Bruno, CA, 20 miles from San Francisco, where it all started. Haight n Ashbury streets. Now thats not to say I didn't dable a bit. But the hippies we're just bums. I didn't want that

  • Forget the college credit.  Just put out some cheap neon lights, etc....and I'll pay a black chip to watch!

  • ah ha, theres the mind doc! So your just investing one sentence into this topic?  Now I know darn well, if you wanted to, you could open this thread up, like a kid on christmas day, opening up his or hers presents.
That being said, maybe things didn't go to good, in A.C.
I for one, would be very interested, in your observations on this thread!
                                                Rico

ps hope things did go OK in A.C.

  • Heads up guys.  Don't think it doesn't matter nowadays whom you associate with or where you go to college if you're building a career.  Someone could have a YouTube of you enjoying that activity in that school and post it on the internet.  What kind of credibility will that college have if they let this continue?  All the professors there will be affected.  How do you think this affects the morale of the students?  (Mind you these students may be armed if a fight breaks out).

    ps, whats your feeling lips?

Well that is very liberal of you rico, but i am not sure that public displays of sex is necessarily the way to go when trying to shake fears and neg perspectives.

Let's push the envelope a bit further and let me ask this........

If you or anyone see nothing wrong with this public display, how would you feel if you find out it was someone that you knew up on that stage? Say in theory you had a sister who was single, would you still be open enough to say "keep up the good work" to the professor?

  • Heads up guys.  Don't think it doesn't matter nowadays whom you associate with or where you go to college if you're building a career.  Someone could have a YouTube of you enjoying that activity in that school and post it on the internet.  What kind of credibility will that college have if they let this continue?  All the professors there will be affected.  How do you think this affects the morale of the students?  (Mind you these students may be armed if a fight breaks out).

Good question but not only the moral aspect. Would it instill in the minds of students that open sex is ok and would it create having more partners and less committed relationships? Or maybe a student did attend this class and goes home and tell his gf or wife that he wants to have sex out in the open because the professor basically says its ok. Would it cause pressure on a partner to do something may not want to.

What i am really curious to know is how genuine was the mindset of these students who went. Was it truly for educational purposes? Hmmmm why do i think not!
  • Most likely was curiosity on most students' parts.  And afterwards, who among them would admit it bothered them, unless they were deeply scarred, in which case hopefully they left as soon as the machine was fired up?

It's not like they were doing research and trying to discover the reactions of the human body to the stimulus.  Researchers do a lot of strange things, like put a couple in an MRI machine and let them have sex in order to see the physiological changes in the body and the brain.  Quite enlightening, and all in the name of education.

Now, I got to see this on TV.  Very intimate images of their love-making, but from the MRI.  You could still see *it* inside of *that*, etc...  You want to see it also?  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVAdCKaU3vY

  • Exactly chilly this was not for the purpose of research and bear in mind on motives of this class "to let go of fear and negativity about sex". So what did the professor hope to accomplish and what message did this send to the students? Have wide open displays of sex to prove your not negative or fearful?

Certain things i think are best left behind closed doors. Before you know it they will have a class displaying bathroom duties openly because it is a natural bodily function.

    Lips
  • rico....I just don't have much to say on this topic.  The class sounds more like a high dollar peepshow than a college course.

  • Good morning Lips, OK, gotta back up here just a bit. Thank you for posting the prof. response. Your useing words as public, out in the open. I didn't interprit this as such. He wasn't holding class in a community building, for example, no he was on campuss. As for my sister, that would be up to her. I'd probably walk out of the classroom, because she's 100 lbs. overweight. You know, nothing worth watching, even if she is enjoying herself!
Also in the prof. response, this wasn't a planned event. The two students involved, evidently voluntered for this after-class presentation. Totally different set of circumstances, than a planned class presentation. Let's not forget at this presentation, attendance was not mandatory.
In the aftermath, the prof. does apologise, saying that he did cross the line, but people that are let's say roughing him up verbably, are not produceing the proper response for why this presentation shouldn't have occured.
To me, it was still all volunteer. Nobody forced to sit through something that might be offensive to them. Everyone is an adult. I'm sticking by my first response.
                                          Rico

  • Fair enough rico thanks for the thought provoking response. But to clarify sis over weight or not i know you wouldn't want to watch it!!

I guess the bottom line is i am not too sure how effective this class would be as far as the professors reasoning. Seems to have caused just the opposite effect with an out pour of negativity.

As for me some things are just meant to stay private. I think probably men are more inclined to not mind as a much as a female would.

    Lips
  • right on lips, it's ok to dissagree, in a professional way. We both get a thumbs up.
                                   NEXT  DEBATE,
                                       Rico

  • ricorizzo, I'm sure your sis would walk out also if it were you up there.  we could debate that, but I'm just jokin' around.  that was pretty insensitive of ya, though...on the other hand.

I coulda started another debate here, similar to another I accidentally started, but I'm keeping all of y'all safe and minding my own business.  And trying hard not to post anything else right now as this one is close enough to a feud already!

  • chilly, be my guest hun, I'm serious. As far as my sis n I are concerned, we we're never close anyway. Now, If I had a real good sis, and she willingly participated in that presentation, I'd walk out for different reasons. To finish, if I had a sis, with a decent figure, but same senerio, we didn't get along, I'd sit through it. In the back of my mind, thinking, that if she could enjoy herself up there, might there be a chance that we could have a family relationship to enjoy, without all the other crap..

                                        Rico

  • I don't have that great a relationship with my siblings either, but no matter what the relationship, they could be there doing whatever and I wouldn't want to watch in any case.  I had enough sharing of sexuality with the family when I was little.  Don't want any now.  Maybe it's a bit different to contemplate this stuff for men and women.

The class itself is probably enlightening.  The after-class demonstration itself probably served the purpose of making this teacher a more provocative choice for next semester.  He made celebrity status and got a mention on the news during the monopoly of enlightening us about Charlie Sheen.  Plus, it seems *he* gets to decide what a proper response to the issues are.  Nice work.

  • Hey Chilly, you said quite a bit, in your first paragraph. My concern, is your not walking around with some old battle scars, you know, those issues have been delt with properly. I realize your road is a bit bumpy, and has been for awhile, but at least theres a road. PM me, if you want to talk a bit more,      Rico
