  • Here's what the BBC says:

An analysis of studies involving more than 2m workers in the British Medical Journal said shift work can disrupt the body clock and have an adverse effect on lifestyle.

It has previously been linked to an increased risk of high blood pressure and diabetes.

Limiting night shifts would help workers cope, experts said.

Any of you working shifts? And if so, are you worried about that affecting your health?

  • i do work shifts and that is scary about my health could be affected sad

  • I used to work shifts and I could feel that it wasn't good for my health. I remember that I needed to work until 11pm one day and then, I'd be scheduled to work next morning, from 7am. It was terrible.

  • When I worked in a hospital in Admitting, I used to work rotating shifts.  Thats when you get 3 different shifts in one week.  When I first started working there i was on call...so go figure.  Talk about a nightmare.  I never knew if it was night or day epecially because from my department you could see no windows or natural light.  And then of course there were the back to back shifts as well as the split shifts work4 hours sleep 4 hours work 4 hours.  Hospital hours are always crazy worn_out

But i was in my early 20's so my body tolerated it somewhat.  I was putting my husband through Optometry school at UC Berkeley.  What is worth...NO NO NO.  He divorced me right before graduation >:(

  • Hmmmm..I just went to night shift ( 9:30pm-6am) I haven't worked such a shift in several years, so we'll see....

  • I've never worked a night shift but I can just imagine how difficult it must be to adjust to it at first. Sleeping days and working nights would must be tough. I need sunshine so that would get to me after a while. I could see high blood pressure possibly from the stress of such a change in shift but the diabetes is interesting. How could shift changes cause your body to process sugar in a different way? Hmm ya learn something new everyday.

Thanks for the interesting tidbit Johnny.

  • It's probably the stress on the body that takes its toll to process sugar causing the pancreas to work overtime, i am guessing. It is similar to jet lag and trying to adjust to the time change. I know it takes me about two weeks to get into the groove and i feel the stress it takes on my body.

The research makes perfect sense and i believe it is really possible.

  • I don't work the night shift. I worked the day shift, but i stay up late every  night playing online. I go to sleep about 2am and get up for work at 7am. I've been doing that for years and it finally caught up with me i had a heart attack last year. The problem with me is i take upper to stay awake for work and when i come home i'm not sleepy so i play online. Its like a catch 22.

  • My work shifts are all over the place. Its been like that for years and knock on wood no problems. it sure does get to me at times but i gots to do what i gots to do.
