Hi LCB'ers
So it begins internet censorship,
The courts in the UK ordered that 5 of the biggest internet service providers block a well known torrent website.
What do you all think about this
I think it is a total attack of our civil libities and so it all begins and we will now see even more sites get blocked this will just be the start of it, its going to get crazy from this point on i can see it,
so here comes the BIG BROTHER STATE
I checked the site 30 mins ago and now i get a page up from my internet service provider saying the site is blocked,
but i tryed a proxy and was then able to access it, so the question then is, what will happen to those that bypass this and use a proxy, is there anything wrong with this, or not, who knows
but there is plenty of other torrent sites out there to choose from those will probly get blocked too, where and when will this end, the only way it will end is blocking 2/3rds of the internet websites and then no proxys will work either, if all countrys stepped in that is going to far u might be thinking, well i think this could happen, how else can they permantly stop these sites
its total madness the internet should be free speech and we should be able to go on any site at any time. it is barbaric that this is now starting to happen.
And THEN dont forget about the law they are trying to pass, so that the goverment have access to everyones search history and private phone calls and everything, so what is the uk coming too, it is seriously not a place i think i want to stay in if it gets any worse than it is getting now

Unfortunately it's not happening only in the UK...
However, even though I agree that there should be freedom on the internet, I do think that some people are pushing the limits of that freedom. So, in my view, it's just a matter of finding a balance between defending privacy and fighting cyber-crime. -

It feels like an invasion of privacy for those that are innocently using the internet LuckyRJ. Unfortunately there are those that have to ruin if for everyone so I can see Johnny's point about trying to achieve balance. I definitely don't like the part about accessing phone calls but then again if there is reason to investigate someone, then the info would be handy. I doubt they'll be looking at search history and phone calls of little ole me randomly. There would have to be cause wouldn't there?

i dunno froggy, yes i do understand what you and johnny said, but i just feel it is going to get out of control and now it has started it will just get totally out of control,
and froggy i think you will be surprised, if they have the power to look at everyones private search history and phone calls then they will even if they dont have any reason to do soo, they might just pick people at random and look and see what people are doing and thus it is basically infringement of our privacy

Yeah Lucky I see what you're saying. I don't like the idea of that at all. Listening in on my phone calls would prove very interesting. "So uh whatcha want for dinner hun?" and they can see my Asda grocery bill. Have fun with that. Seriously though, where do they draw the line. C'mon

It's all about the money and copyright infringements for TPB. It was inevitable....and it won't be the last I would think.
As for accessing your surfing data; they have to have good cause to request that information i.e. they think you are planning a robbery or something worse. That said, what is to stop them anyway? Nothing!
I agree Lucky - what is the UK coming to.

Firstly just to say thanks to everyone that replied
I could have gone into a really big debate and said a lot of points that would cause debates in there own part but i refrained myself lol, cos i was too tired to type it all out so i just made this basic thread touching on this issue.
I will say 2 of the other things i was gonna post
Isn't governments some form of dictatorship???
because to be perfectly honest, they all are regardless which country we live in, all governments is a form of dictatorship
and that basically means what they do and say goes, and so what we have a democracy but if the main party's have majority in the voting on the laws and the bills in Parliament then at the end of the day there is not a lot that anyone can do about it, so it isn't actual democracy when this is the case and in my opinion it is dictating what we have to follow and all of that stuff
also morals. where did morals come from??
did they come from religious beliefs over the hundreds and thousands of years that have past and they just get changed every century to suit the new modern age.
although i follow a few basic morals i am not religious and i only follow the most basic ones.
these was the things i wanted to also post earlier
i posted them now

Lucky,
Let's not go back to the over sensitivity of your posts AGAIN. You are answered to and is certainly not a personal vendetta. So let's calm down, be patient and there will be replies i'm sure because it does make for interesting debate.
I am not sure how the government decides but it should not be based on religion because there are way too many religions that are followed particularly in countries like the US. But dictating to us what we can or can not view is despicable as far as i am concerned.
And where one website is banned another remains. Seems there would be a lot of legal problems on their hands.

sorry, just having a bad time at the moment.
loads of stuff on my head, i get like this when im really anxious and stressed
and yes it is despicable, but i think i have made some good points about dictating though and all governments is some form of a dictatorship just heavily disguised as a democracy
i will just add some more information to back up why i feel this is the case
in the uk, we basically have 2 main political parties, conservatives and labour, and it is those parties that vote who is the leader of there own political parties, and all we get to do is vote which party we want to be in power every 5 years in the general election,
and yes there is other parties too, but they will never ever be able to get enough votes to form a government,
so everyone is stuck to basically vote for labour or conservatives so where is the freedom there too.
i actually feel it would be more appropriate for the uk to follow in the usa's footsteps and anyone can nominate themselves to run for president (in the uk's case prime-minister)
this way it makes it more free, and then when it comes to voting on bills in the house of commons it gives more challenges and a lot of things would not get passed and so on, so this would make it a lot more better in the long run i feel
but this will never happen, and thus we just get stuck with these 2 parties, yes i know we are in a coalition government at the moment but that is because the liberal democrat party did well in the last election because of the new tv debates we had, but liberal democrats will never have enough seats ever to form a government, it will always be labour or conservatives

Not every government is a dictatorship, I guess it depends on a point of view - whether or not you have voted for them. If you don't agree with a government you will naturally feel oppressed. If you agree with bills and laws that a government vote for, you will feel great about it. What I see as a problem with this new laws concerning Internet is completely invasion of our privacy and freedom, too.
I think that politics and religion have to be two separate things, which doesn't happen often these days. As for personal development, if people are going to achieve that by being religious or not, it would be their choice.
