  •   Hi gang:
Wow, what a Sunday I have had.
I had a tree in my back yard. An old apple tree, half dead.  It still produced some fruit but wormy and gross.  It had to go.

"Don't we need a professional?" I say as my coisin starts the chain saw.  Noooooo, piece of cake." He proceeds to climb the ladder into the tree.  I begin to get this sick feeling in my stomach. I should of stopped him right there. I KNEW I should of followed my gut.  Would of, should of, could of.  As he is cutting I say, "That branch is awful big, I think when it falls it is going to hit the wires."
"Nooooooo," he says. "It is going to fall this way."  I get up and out of the way.
TIMBER............. Guess where the branch lands. Right on the electrical and cable lines.  "Crack, snap,"
I saw it in slow motion.  It was a sickening feeling as I knew there was nothing I could do about it.
After a deafing moment of silence, I see my cable line is on the groud.  Thank GOD my electric line withstood the strain and stayed up on the pole.
"Gee, that didn't go as planned" he says.

I was shaking so bad, I could hardly stand.  I mean that branch coming down on those wires was scary business.

I'd had enough for one day.  To much excitment.  The rest of the tree was not as scary, and it did come down. We cleaned up the mess, and called it a day after about 6 hours.

I think we all hate to admit when we need help.
There is a reason people are called professionals at what they do.

Anyone else out there think of a time when they should of called a professional but did it themselves?

                                                            PMM2008

  • LOL PAM! You poor thing, i'm glad you are okay and made
it through the sunday of unnatural disaster lol..
Geez what a day for you!

  • Thanks Imagin.ation. I am so sore I can't even tell you.  lips_sealed

How about the ever popular "Shade tree mechanic." Trying to fix thier car, and they really don't know what they are doing? So by the time they are done their repair bill is twice of what it would of been originally cause they worked on it first.  hahahahah

  • Thank the Lord you are okay.

  •   I have many times already Doc, but thank you too for your kind words.  cheesy

I see I many friends here at LCB that care about me.  smiley That makes me so happy. Sorry to worry you good folks. At least I wasn't the one with the chainsaw in hand.
    No thanks.....

  • Damn PMM, I too am glad you're ok...

Regarding "Pros" some are truly worth their weight in gold (Like I have done a tranny replacement (Shaft type) and I know if that ever comes up again I'll let a PRO do it (Oh the car was ok, my hand took 3 weeks to heal though) but lesson learned...

I do remember a time when some neighbors decided to re-roof. The husband had a week off, decided "The old roof just needs new shingles" and so he started putting the new ones on top of the old.

This is ok, if the shingles are the problem. However, halfway up the roof, he suddenly decided to make a new skylight.

The "Pros" came out and did the job in 4 days (Including repair to the roof) neighbor never said another word about doing it yourself, he ALWAYS called a pro after that incident!

  • ROFL.....Exactly genenco.  A skylight without a professional? Oh myyyyyy
Roofing is something you have got to have a pro for I think. Transmissions are wayyyyy up there too.  wink
Also on my list is cutting down trees.  cheesy CALL A PROFESSIONAL.

How about plumbing? That is a nightmare too.

  • LOL.. i think he meant to fix the roof, but ended up getting a nice big skylight, Green Acres style laugh_out_loud

    LMAO Genenco!

  • PAM that sucks!!!  next time just cal JIM!!!! hehe
  •     HAHAHAHA Jim:
Where the heck were you today when I needed a jack of all trades?  My coisin sure wasn't. That has to be the worst. Having someone think they are a pro when they are clueless.

    I'll tell ya a funny ...
I go to the chiropractor all the time for a bad neck. It has no curve to it.  (No wonder people call me uptight)  I have watched that guy do it for years and years, and it looks simple.  Just make a fist, have me lay a certain way, and push down.  POP POP POP......
Who needs all that schooling. I know exactly what I am doing from years of going. grin
I say all the time to my friends I am gonna open up my house and teach how it is done.

"The "AT HOME, DO IT YOURSELF, CHIROPRATOR CARE. ".

    (Chiropractic care by Ronco!!!) laugh_out_loud

All that numbness is normal!!! cheesy

  • Well PMM...Here's one more for you and this is my BEST example of "Pro" time.

I'd won a nice amount and so I "Very Nicely" went out and bought my Mother the best set of washer and dryer combo you could get (I think around $500 Kenmore) and so I brought it home and set them up.

Oh gee, the plug was different on the Washer! "I'll just rewire the outlet" I thought and did so waltzing off to the bar.

Mom comes out and sees Card (Ok it was her birthday) and set. She then goes to washer and sets it up and turns it on....

She had made a lot of friends and one of them is a certified electrician. He later commented that had my Mother been standing in a puddle of water, I and my sisters would be about $500,000 richer as it would have killed her instead of giving her a nasty shock.

I paid him the "Nominal Wage" which was a sincere apology to my Mother and promised to always get help when dealing with electrical stuff.

So that's why I am VERY hesitant when "Fixing" anything that some nice certification would be desired if done for money.

Plumbing? If it's more then using one of those plungers, get me a phone book!!

  • Oh My gosh Genenco!!  What a story. The whole point of the post for sure. Just like today, it can be down right dangerous to not get a professional when needed.  A downed power line I think would of been the worst case scenerio, and down right deadly to mess with.
I take the humorous appraoach when posting, but as you have so kindly reminded me, it is a serious deal to mess with things we know nothing about.
Thanks for sharing, and I am glad no one was hurt in your story.  (I'm glad I wasn't hurt ethier)

                                  PMM2008

  • whoa..PMM2008...so glad no one got hurt...

it reminded me of a video i watch on chainsaw safety and thank God i did...as i would hv never hv known about "kick-back" until it happened. Now after the watching the video...it'll never happened cuz i put thing back in it's box and returned it...LOL!!! and decided to put the money towards hiring a contractor instead. imagine though if i didn't watch the video..and with the mentality that i can do this, or this should be easy and went ahead, started to cut into the logs and that chainsaw kick-backed!!!.....this soda would be fizzing alright...fizzing a whole load of blood.

Anyway..no one got hurt..and i know u'll avoid doing that again

  •       HAHAHAH Tony:
            So true so true!!!
I used to be really bad about thinking I could do things I could not do. FIxing the heater blower on my car (had to remove the dash :-\ ) I was lost, but I tried it, had to have my brother come and fix it for me the right way. (He is a mechanic)(I had about 20 EXTRA screws that went somewhere) :-\
I also thought I could change the faucet in my bathroom one time. Now that sounds easy right? Well it wasn't. Had to re solder the plumbing to the new fixture. I was lost again.  Once again I had to have someone come and bail me out.  I am better now, I no longer take on projects I have no experience in.
My brother has a saying for me..."Pam exclamation Don't touch anything!!!  laugh_out_loud
                                                                                PMM2008

  • Pammmmmmmmmmmy,  I AM SO GLAD U ARE OK HUN!!!!!

I am just the opposite though, I think I have only open the hood of my car ONCE! Cutting down a tree, HECK NO.  I don't even chop wood at our family cabin. lol
