  • There are so many stray cats around here and there is one that I love. I've named him Romeo because he runs the neighborhood and still has his little coconuts. We let Romeo in to eat or in bad weather but there's a problem. He sprays. The first time he did it I laughed for about 15 minutes. Tail straight in the air and a little shake of the butt. The curtains have been sprayed with pee pee and we have followed him around with bleach. He is a sweetheart and extremely smart but he's a pisser too.

It's to the point that I only feed him outside but when the weather is bad or he comes over the next day with oil on his back from lying under a car I want to die.

    Tell me your stray stories.

    Here's Romeo

  • Mama Kitty is a cat we got from our pound.  she is a great cat but only likes women (and chewing on plastic bags).  We got Patches when a stray had a litter of kittens in my mom's garage and the pound picked the mom and kittens up but some how missed her. It was cold and she was too tiny to survive but she is a royal terror now.  Dave is a very loveable but a little dumb cat we recently got.  He was a kitten our neighbor brought from a house where the kids were just horrible to him.  We did have a stray Fat Pat who lived on our porch but he has sinced abandoned us for the people down the street.  Apparently they give him canned food.

Romeo might not spray if you had his peanuts removed.  That will sometimes cure is need to mark his territory.  He sure is a handsome kitty.

  • I wish there was someone around here that would take him in. He doesn't appear to belong to anyone and he's got those alley cat ways. He comes and goes when he pleases. We've got a kitten that was knocking at the window back in December. She's a sweetie and they do not get along.  :'(

  • When I moved into my house, one evening there was a pitiful but urgent little "meow meow" outside the sliding glass doors.  It was coming from a tiny kitten, probably about 4 weeks old with no signs of a momma or knowing where he belonged.  He was desperate, but scared, and ran away every time he was approached.
A few evenings later I was eating some Garlic Chicken Voila! and put a piece of chicken near the door, and the little kitty finally made a move for the food.  I left a trail of chicken, broccoli, noodles and corn inside the house and bit by bit he ate his way inside the house.  Soon, he was curled up beside me in the recliner.  He was naturally sweet, orange and white, and came by regularly for food.  Eventually we had to give him a name so I named him Kenney Kinkitty.
Of course he grew and had adventures and provided a lot of fun.  He was such a ladies man.  One summer he started bringing his girlie friends over for food.  He seemed to have a new 'friend' every day.  By the next year he had I guess chosen his favorite, and try as I did to scare her off, she grew fatter by the day and I had to give into feeding her since she obviously needed the food for the babies.  She had 5 baby boys under the porch and my stray family grew from one to two to seven!  This winter she gave us three black and white babies. None of them Kenney's!  The nerve of that girl!
Well, a few days ago, she had kittens again.  Where, I don't know.  how many?  Anyone's guess.  I'll find out in about 4 weeks when they show up on the porch.  Until then, every time I open the door, I get rushed by hungry cats.  Every time I walk by when the door is open, they all try to get in through the screen door.  19 hungry eyes staring at my every move.  (Terminator only has one good eye.  The other went from ugly to monstrous and finally now is a nice shade of blue)  I secretly hope that one day I'll find that most of them have strayed *away*.

  • Aww Kenney Kinkitty is such a cute name.

  • : )  my last name is kinman, my husband's is kinser, so kinkitty was an easy choice once the kenney was decided.

  • You guys are awesome for taking in these stray cats. I have been known to take home a few animals too. Everything from birds, cats and dogs.

I tend to worry more about the dogs because they don't seem to be able to fend for themselves like cats can. They also require so much human contact.

I saw the other day the saddest thing. I had to knock it out of my head cuz i fret so bad. There was a group of geese and several families with babies next to a little retention pond. One of of the geese was behind a fence and looked like it couldn't get out or fly while all the other geese were on the other side.

Immediately i go into a panic when suddenly i saw it fly over the fence with a sigh of relief. But it waddled with a limp and one of her legs appeared to be broken. I didn't know what to do. Dad and the baby geese stood close by her and i thought if i take her away to a wild animal shelter she may lose her family. So i left her and had to turn up the radio to distract me.

  • I loved watching those little baby geese. I was so protective over them. I got so attached to a family of geese one year that I was able to pet the babies. I bought bread and fed them every single night at the pond outside my old apartment in Chicago.

There was a nest my last year there that I watched over for almost 6 weeks. When kids would mess with the mommy and daddy goose I would stop them.

I figured that the babies were due to be born any day. One Saturday I went out and when I came back I checked on the nest. The geese were gone and the nest was destroyed. The landscapers ran over it, including the eggs, with the lawn mower the night before. I was crushed. The scene was just awful.

As the week went on, one of the geese had been hit by a car in the street. The other hung around aimlessly for days after. OMG it was horrible....

  • It is wayyyyyyyy too sad. And what is worse is the pain and suffering these geese go through when they are separated by death or the eggs are taken or destroyed.

Just the other day a friend that works at a restaurant told me there was a duck who laid eggs in the bushes in the outdoor patio. And the management thought it would be disruptive for the customers who sat near it because the mother was very protective of her eggs.

The freaken management decided to have the eggs and mother removed by local police and put them in a cage and hauled them away. Later that day the mother came back to the exact spot with dad looking for her eggs and won't leave the area.  sad sad sad sad sad

  • I'm having very bad thoughts about that management right now  >:(

  • I adopted a stray cat once, a few years ago when I was in high school. My sister named her Suzie and she turned out to be pregnant, gave birth to two boys that were named, again by my sister, Mitzi and Pitzi. Those two guys remained with us for years, they were extremely funny and great hunters of any bird that dared to land in our back yard. Unfortunately they passed away a couple of years ago.

  • Glad to hear a happy story like that Mojack. You gave that puppy a good home  smiley

Why can't cats and dogs just get along? I know there are some that do but in general it's a nightmare.

  • Great stories Johnny and Mojack. They become so much apart of our families and make our lives a bit brighter.

  • I've got another stray coming over for dinner every night. She's also wanting breakfast and lunch too. Beautiful cat but I don't think she likes her picture taken. I'm following her around with the camera but she won't hold still. I will get her and share a pic.

Sounds like you definitely have a way with cats Froggy.  Looking forward to your pic.

I remember this cat that used to visit my Mum - she was a gorgeous little thing.  She had arthritis in her leg and walked with a bit of a limp but she was friendly and so cute and loved to sit on my Mum's lap and be stroked.  My Mum would never feed her because the owner was a near neighbour and my Mum didn't think it was right but she did enjoy the visits from this cat.  The woman who owned the cat eventually had a right go at my Mum telling her that she shouldn't let the cat in or stroke her etc etc.  I recall my Mum was very upset about this and I do remember her shedding a tear over it.  Makes me feel so sad to think about it as my Mum was just being kind to this cat that loved to come and say hello.  There was no harm in what my Mum did.

  • OMG no harm done at all. The owner should be glad the kitty was in safe hands and not being attacked out on the streets.

These cats don't seem to have homes. They are always out and seem starved. Poor things. I'd hate to think about what would happen if I didn't feed them or let them in for a while in the winter.

  • Here's two strays you don't get to see everyday. This lovely pair showed up at my nephews back yard in Kentucky....

  • Heres the other one...

You're very kind Froggy.  I'm so glad they found you or they would surely have died of starvation.

eyesofgreen - that's incredible that they turned up in the garden.  What a beautiful sight to see both of them.

  • My sister had a cat that her family could not handle... kept biting and scratching them, just psycho... She was going to have to take her to the pound, but asked me if I might want to take her... of course I took her, she was gorgeous!  They had named "her" Sylvester because she was a tuxedo cat, but I took the liberty of feminizing her name to Sylvestra. She was psycho (probably from having her ears and tail pulled by my sisters kids), but she was also smart! We worked things out between us after a while and she would respond to my hand signals and words. For example, I could put my hand up, palm facing her and tell her to "go to bed" and she would lay down immediately. She had to be on kitty prozac for some time after seeing the vet whom she attacked. She died a little over a year ago and I miss her terribly. Here is a picture of the late, great Sylvestra.
You can tell by looking at her she was a bit psycho but I loved her dearly!

Beautiful kitty!! U know, I haven't met a cat yet that didn't have at least a little psycho in them.
  • You're right for sure wmmeden... cats are very special creatures and they know it!  wink
I loved Sylvestra's whiskers and eyebrows... so distinguished!

  • She was gorgeous Kattboots.  Something very "regal" about her.  Sorry you miss her.

Thanks blue! Yes she was certainly regal... queen of all she beheld! I have not been able to get another cat thus far, but the right rescue cat will come along eventually!
  • I was living in Iowa, my roommie had 2 horses (Later 3 when the mare gave birth) So, I hit the "Free" section and found 2 pups. I drove out to the place to find 2 older people (60+ and on disability) and they had taken in these two dogs which they knew were strays.

I took them with me (The trip to get them turned out to be a 65 mile trip ONE WAY) and hit the vet. In 3 weeks they cost me $300 and were the lights of my life for 10 years.

  • Boy gene, you certainly went the "extra mile" for those pups! laugh_out_loud laugh_out_loud laugh_out_loud
Really, what a wonderful thing you did and you were rewarded with that 10 years of friendship!  smiley

  • Sat.  I was out checking my garden and from underneath our house out comes this kitten.  It was hot and thirsty, but it came right up to me.  So I guess we have cat #5.  I am on my way to my very own hoarders episode.  We named her Whitey

  • We named her Whitey

    I love the name!
  • I have a hard time turning away a hungry kitten. I was also afraid for it because we have people who let their dogs run loose.  Now our cats r mama kitty, buddy, patches, Dave, and whitey.

  • Aww she's adorable wmmeden! She doesn't know how lucky she is yet  wink

  • This is Sybil. One minute she's affectionate and the next she'll bite your hand off. I'm pretty sure she has a home down the street but jumps in our open window to eat and sleep. She's growing on me but she's a crazy one.

  • Sybil is the right name for her then.  BWHAHA.

  • OMG,I love her name,Sybil.
What an adorable baby you have, froggy!
She looks so much like my Oreo.

  • Froggy froggy froggy.........don't tell me ya took in another stray cat! You attract them like a magnet!

    She is very cute  smiley
  • That's a cute feline Froggy!

  • My beloved Cu (Tsu) is also adopted. He was a young adult dog when we found him tied to a trash bin with his paw broken. We untied him, helped him and fed him, and he became the neighborhood pet. He got lost once and we accidentally found his pic on a pet adoption forum, so we decided to take him in for good. And in the meantime, he survived a couple of deadly dog diseases, but we've managed to get him better and he's a happy, chubby dog now. smiley

  • What a happy ending Cat  smiley You saved it's little life.

and no lips, I have not taken in another. She only spends about 20 hours of the day here eating, sleeping, hair balling and pooing. Definitley doesn't live here  laugh_out_loud
