  • wow this is not the end of this either, and although everyone talks about it, we really don't know the worst of it yet, I truley believe that. i do not understand why this hasn't been stopped!!!!

  • I heard on the news that it has now been stopped - 83 days it took them?

How much long term damage is unknown.

    blue

    EDIT

    BBC news item here

  • This is a way more than just disturbing for sure...

What's happening in this world and what will be left for our children...

Oh shoot...I cried when I ended up watching the animals...especially the dolphins.

Please someone refresh my memory why this happened?  mean where this all started? I really like to know more about it...Thanks in advance!!!

  • The Deepwater Horizon oil spill (also referred to as the BP oil spill, the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, the BP oil disaster or the Macondo blowout)was a massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that is the largest offshore spill in U.S. history.

Some estimates placed it by late May or early June 2010, as among the largest oil spills in history with hundreds of millions of gallons spilled to date. The spill stems from a sea floor oil gusher that resulted from the April 20, 2010 Deepwater Horizon drilling rig explosion. The explosion killed 11 platform workers and injured 17 others.

On July 15, 2010, BP claimed the leak had been stopped by capping the gushing oil wellhead, though there is a risk that a significant pressure shift could create a new leak on the sea floor.

We're still holding our breaths till one of those relief wells can hit the well and plug it good.

I'm NOT going to go into any sort of Diatribe on "Big Oil" I wish only that those who dis big oil realize that if it wasn't for us the consumers, we'd be using horse and buggys.

I will say that BP's offering of the 20 Billion fund for enconomic damage far exceeds what Exxon should have done when their tanker ripped open and coated the coast of Alaska.

In closing, some may wonder why it took so long. The well was 1 MILE deep into the ocean. Had they been allowed to drill closer to land, this disaster would have been over much sooner. I am still debating this, but I do appreciate BP's "Extra Efforts" in trying to stop it.

  • This catastrophe really hits home, around here it's all about the oil industry. My boyfriends worked on a drilling rig for the past 15 years.  Tho drilling around here is slightly different than offshore drilling,  4,500FT is the norm drilling depth til you hit oil. BP's well is drilling 1 mile into the earths core, MINUS the sea-level ! So basically, if the ocean floor is 500FT  below sea level, that's not included in BP's est. drilling depth exclamation
Also many people believe this disaster was either a Terrorist Attack or Green peace movement.  12 different safety mechanisms had to have failed to result in this disaster... so unless all 12 failed, in my opinion,  this was not just a freak accident!

  • Thank you so much for more details...

For this, you get an A+!!! kiss

I have to admit that although I don't have much knowledge on this matter, I do have to agree  with you on that.
I would love to hear more about your bf's experiences of his job and what he thinks of all this...if you could when you have a chance! Thanks for sharing, chantel and I can not wait for more posts from you!!!  smiley

Wow........that is awful if it was a deliberate attack. I have not followed closing this story because i struggle to handle it. Anything that deals with animals i just fall apart.

I couldn't look at the photos and thanks for the warning mommy.

  • Yes, I feel bad for the animals.  However, I am a bit disturbed that when the "BIG SPILL" is discussed rarely, if ever, the families of 11 men killed in the initial Deepwater Horizon explosion are mentioned.

  • ...my blood pressure shoots up every time I am reminded of this...its like the beginnings of a panic attack

I know, it's like the shuttle disaster years ago and all people talked about what how sad it was that that teacher died in it...

Heck, 7 OTHERS died in it too. Shouldn't THEY matter? They also had families and great futures too...Such a pity.

  • Gen, you are so right.  Man, I really am sorry about the OILY DUCK, etc...........BUT.....What about the 11 families?  What about the loss of jobs?  What about the suicide rate going up for family members whose livelihood was ruined?

  • I think it's a tragedy for anything, person, animal that was affected by this disaster. It really breaks my heart, not just for the animals, but for the people too.

I really feel horrible for these families that lost loved ones. I will keep them in my prayers as well.

    :-*

  • Its really sad to see all those pictures poor animals they dont got a chance, and they might have stopped the spill but how many years its gonna take to clean up now 20-30years atleast? sad

  • Sure, this is a first rate eco-disaster.  Bad stuff and BP should be liable...no question!  But, the oil spill off Mexico in the 1970s was much worse and guess what????  Ecologically, things were back to normal pretty soon.

We are getting so hyped up over oily ducks and dead fish that we are jeopardizing the jobs of 10,000s in the Gulf States.  Drill, drill for JOBS, JOBS.

  • Hey Man  cool.

I don't like the idea of dead ducks, but eating shrimp, oysters, and crabs, those are unclean foods.

  • freddy......Yeah, I used to love Oysters....until I saw where they lived! laugh_out_loud

What alot of people also don't know, is that the Mexico blow out, lasted (Here it comes)   10 MONTHS  :o shocked shocked

But, maybe we should have done a "Russian" on the well. They simply drop a nuke near it and seal off the whole area. Of course these people don't worry about enviornmental damage. After all, they get rid of radioactive stuff and parts by simply dumping them into the deep sections of the ocean.

And regarding shrimp  and crab....YUMMMMMMMMMMM...If I had teeth (Like before) I crunch the shrimp tails also. shocked
  • Shrimp tails shocked huh lol

I love some crab too...sorry for the derail...

Back to the regular scheduled program grin

    :-*

  • 'Tis really a shame...

Now we may have to rely on other countries, probably Asia for the delicious sea foods...

Feel so frustrated and devastated for many who are lost with jobs and lives includes innocent animals...

Please bless our country and stay strong together to support each other and let it all pass quick and smooth!
