  • I couldnt find a decent bonus for the casino software I wanted to play because a new slot game is out.  I took the money I was going to spend at a casino and instead I bought for an online friend's 11 year old kid whose father doesnt give a sh*t about his own son since the divorce, something new for his play station 3 guitar hero he got for xmas from his grandparents.  The feeling I have now far exceeds any feeling Ive had playing and doing a withdrawal from an online casino.  The gift should arrive from Amazon next Tuesday and I cant wait until he gets home and sees it.

  • Well done, Gunnylab!
Winning is just a spin away, but the spirit of giving beats that any day!

  • Awww,Gunny....
This reminds me of one of my favorite quotations...

"In helping others, we shall help ourselves, for whatever good we give out completes the circle and comes back to us."

If I loved you before I love you more now...
I truly believe that one of the most wonderful things in the world is a giving...
not only because of making someone happy but it can also fulfill our living.

I know your focus was on how happy it will make this kid feel.
I also know you knew that he won't be able to return the same but I think that If you expected something in return, your giving would not mean as much to that person  nor would it mean as much to you.
What you did was the true spirit of giving.
When you give a gift to someone, or do something nice for a person, you know how much better it is if you do not think about getting something in return.

I am so glad to know someone like you,Gunny!

  • There need to be more people in this world like you... Thank you!

  • It's not about how you feel - it's about how you know the kid will feel and that is priceless.

    Very thoughtful Gunnylab.

    blue

  • Gunny that is so thoughtful and special of you,I'm sure you will be rewarded for your kind deed because what goes around comes around and what you did for him is perfect.

  • Thank you everyone.  I really wasnt expecting any replies and I have no idea why I wrote it in the forum. I got tired of online casinos not paying me and I searched for something else to amuse me online when I was bored.  For some stupid reason I paid to join an online auction site.  I saw many things I wanted to bid on but when I saw play station 3 software games I couldnt get this 11 year old off my mind.  There is something fishy about the auctions.  I said screw bidding on auctions.  I called my friend and had her put her son on the phone and ran the available games past him.  He picked two.  I told him i would try and win one in an auction.  What I really did was bid to buy.  I got a discount and bought one of the games and I am having it shipped to him.  He knows about this but has no idea what I bought him last nite.  I am going back to play texas holdem at nlop.com., a legal USA site.  I have decided all my cash winnings are going to this child.  If his mom needs clothes for him I will get gift certificates and send them to him.  If that is taken care of I will buy him more play stastion 3 games.  His father physically abused his mother and was never a father figure to him.  I want this child to realize not all men are bad.  I might get more joy out of this than this 11 year old.

  • I think you will get more joy out of this gunnylab.  This child will always remember for all his life what you did/are doing.

Thank heavens for people like you.

    blue

  • Gunny, you are my new hero!

  • What is the benefit of helping someone then bragging about it?

  • Joseph Kennedy.......so, to paraphrase the Sermon on the Mount - "When you give don't let your right hand know know what the left is doing.  When you give, give in secret, and God, who sees in secret, will bless you."

Gunnylab has done a wonderful, wonderful big hearted thing.  Truly it tugs at the heart strings.

My question is always, do token good deeds do any good?  Short term warmth, yes. But, having been involved in charity work with the poor for many years, I have to honestly say it does little or no good.  Often there is harm in this type of giving.  (Believe it or not.)

The main thing this kid needs are parents who have their act together.  But, the toy was nice.....good job.

  • Ok Doc, it appears you and your coffee pot are back in working order. Mr Kennedy, I see why you may think, gunny is pattin himself on the back, and your entitled to your opinion, but he's NOT!!
He's describeing a positive experience, and didn't realize he'd get the feed-back it did. At the end of his experience he's attempting to teach the child something positive, ( as in all men are not butt heads). To finish, gunny states ( in blue collar lingo), that he's gonna get a bigger nut out of the experience, than the child! Simply put, It's a win win situation, for both. Excellent job Gunny!!

  • Well, referring to Docs message. It is true that one person pointed out (Sometime ago) that we share more during the holidays (Christmas/Thanksgiving) and we really should be (If we can afford it) giving year round.

Sadly, there will always be people taking advantage of charity. Always wanting more, taking the best and ignoring the cries of others. I choose to donate to soup kitchems and shelters. That way, I'm failrly sure that someone is benefitting fm the gift and not many can abuse it.

Oh and Gunny, that was a decent thing to do. Sad isin't it when parents get so wrought up over a divorce, the kids suffer worst.

  • Actually I think Gunnylab is a good man and helping the kid by buying the toy is very positive.

With that said, a red flag goes up when anyone (especially politicians) brags about what good they've done.  You automatically think agenda.

  • anyone wishing to be or have a hero, there are many small requests and some big ones at a site called wishuponahero.  I was able to send some cards to some kids, and some stickers.  And I had a couple of heroes send my grandsons some video games that their children had outgrown.  It's a nice site.  But, I also got an evil hero offering to help me out financially but actually trying to scam me with bogus money orders.  So, yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.  Problem is there are hundreds of them, and not all of them are jolly and nice.

You can find used video games for very reasonable prices at your local goodwill or other thrift stores.  Kids love video games.  Parents do, too.  Anytime of year.

  • GOOD HEART gunnylab

    cool

  • Rico.....First, keep in mind the issue is SCOTCH, not coffee smiley

Anway.....please keep in mind I praised him for his wonderful, big heart good deed.

However, anytime giving is the subject, it does open a large box of discussion.  Who really benefits from giving?  Does it do any good?  Etc.

Here is a good case in point.  After 9-11 people donated teddy-bears to 9-11 survivors and victims' famlies.  All over the country people found great joy in donating teddy-bears.  It warmly connected givers with the 9-11 attacks.  HOWEVER.....where did those teddy-bears go?  They went to two warehouses in New Jersey, stuffed to the top with teddy-bears.  They made the giver feel nice, but did no good to any receiver.

Most "donation charities" will tell you over 90% of what they get is pretty useless crap.  Goodwill states that over 95% of the clothes they get donated are unusable.

So, what I will assert is that we need to examine our giving to go BEYOND our own need to feel good.

  • Chilly,I was on that site during Christmas and they helped my son get xmas gifts for his kids.I'm not sure if it was you who had a link on here for them but if it was thank you!

    Joseph,

I can only presume that you are adding drama to the mix for a good debate. I can't honestly believe that you could take this good deed and turn it into something negative.

Gunnylab does a good deed. Is it a sin to talk about it if it make his/her feel good. Absolutely not!

We can all moan, groan and complain til the cows come home and thats all fine and dandy. But when it comes to feel good posts we shoot it down?

    I don't think so...........

Gunnylab sing your praises, and i will sing with you!
  • Lipps.....We all think Gunnlab did a good thing.

However, I think in a public forum its fair to discuss the larger and peripheral issues.  "Giving" and "receiving" are loaded subjects.  And this General Forum's rules are about "feel free to talk about anything and everything..."  In other words, if you put it out there......well, one should expect the variety of feedback and comments people give.

  • re:("this probably doesn't belong here, but it makes me feel good")

    That's what HE said!

And our resident doc is just the one to add some flavor to the mix!! You should know by now doc i love a good debate.
  • Lips isn't it amazeing, what people will do for a debate? this is borderline rediculous, takeing someones good deed, and twisting it around to make them appear to be, the ones that are in emotional trouble.
Doc, I understand what your attempting to put on the table, but gunny is just not going over an over, on how much he gave the child. The message he gave was the unfortunate circumstances, the mother an child we're going through, and gunny's attempt to make the child have a good feeling, in regards to an adult male figure.
There's no need to twist this around anymore, I'm sure not. It is what it is, a good deed, all the way around.

                                          Rico

  • Lips, you enjoy a good debate...and now you have it.

Gunnylab I presume didn't *plan* to tell about what he did before he did the good deed.  He mentioned it in passing.  It's not like he angling for a moderator job or any favors from anyone on here.  (Although I can see Gunny as an excellent moderator.)

  • rico......***Mind Doc takes a swig of Scotch***  Keep in mind, I have praised what Gunny did.

But....there are lots of connective issues to discuss.  I thought that is what a forum is for, right?

  • gunny,

What a generous thing for you to do.  It's true, when we give to others, we often feel better ourselves.

Hopefully karma will set take hold and when you do make that deposit, riches will come back to you.

There is nothing better than warming a kids heart and letting him know somebody CARES.  There is no better gift in the world.

    Thanks for sharing.

  • What is the benefit of helping someone then bragging about it?

Of course you would take something positve and turn it negative.

If you don't have something nice to say.... best to keep your mouth tightly closed.

He wasn't bragging but sharing.  It would do you good to learn the difference.

  • Well, referring to Docs message. It is true that one person pointed out (Sometime ago) that we share more during the holidays (Christmas/Thanksgiving) and we really should be (If we can afford it) giving year round.

Oh and Gunny, that was a decent thing to do. Sad isin't it when parents get so wrought up over a divorce, the kids suffer worst.

When the ecomony was much better for our family, we often 'adopted' a family, and not just during the holidays.

We were notified of famies through lower income schools and church and I loved going to Target and buying bags of paper products, cleaning supplies, necessities, and personal hygiene stuff.  I would move on to the grocery store and buy bags of food.  I made sure to get 'snack packs' of things that folks on a tight budget often can't afford.

We took our kids with us to deliver and chat with the families.  We did everything we could not to make them feel like a charity case.

It annoyed me to no end when some didn't as much as say thank you.  Did it stop us?  No.  Did I consider it?  Umm. yep.

Am I patting myself on the back?  No.  Some day I may be in the same situation and hope someone would reach out to my family

HUGE difference giving to Haiti disaster (where much of the money sits), to a charity or Katrina victims, etc.

It's a much different thing to give directly to someone out of the goodness of your heart.  They obviously are getting the full 100% of what was given and not 80% or 90%
  • Amen, Gabby.

  • Amen, Gabby.

    Thank you!, chilly.

There are so many subjects open to debate but giving something to a child whose father doesn't care doesn't qualify.  In my opinion.

For some reason... this threads turn is really ticking me off.
  • gabby....I think your model of giving is the most beneficial.

  • Doc, your going to have to debate with someone else. I can't justify putting anymore effort into a non-debatable issue!! Right + Right doesn't = Wrong.
Might wanna take it easy on the scotch.

  • Posted here are several examples of posters giving to what they thought would be beneficial.  Other factors, how they gave, what they gave to, the fact posters felt compelled to share it shows a hint of the kind of character that is latent, what is beneath all of the political correctness and manners that is expected in being social.

  • rico...hmmm...lay off the Scotch, gambling, gazing too lustfully at women, etc...Yeah, lots of things I need to stop.

I think this thread has been a very polite expression of opinion.  I find the offense and anxiety interesting.  When a poster writes in the heading "This probably doesn't belong here but...."  that poster is asking for feedback, pro and con to his/her statement.

I am always interested at how irritated folks get.....  Rico, have I irritated or offended you?

  • Doc just likes to throw a monkey wrench in now and again. Get a thread stimulated and i don't think he means any harm. It is his MO so to speak in most threads.

This just happened to be a thread where some may of felt it was not the time nor place for it.

Nevertheless, it encourages us to think, gets our creative juices flowing and makes for good conversation as long as it is done with respect.

    Lips
  • I apologize to those who thought I was bragging for starting this thread.  I am not that type of person.  I am not looking to get a moderator position on this site.  I couldnt live up to the job Zuga, Lips, Wan, Blue and the others do here.  In fact I am going back to the poker club I left around 10 months ago.  I sure as heck never dreamed this would turn into a debate on charities.

With this all said, I received a call from the 11 year old yesterday at 4 pm my time.  He was all excited.  Here his package arrived yesterday instead of next Tuesday.  He loved it.  Last nite my friend emailed me 3 pictures she took of him opening the box and the last one was him seeing what was in the box.  The last picture was priceless.

Now its over so a moderator has my permission to delete this thread.  I was right in the very beginning.  I said I dont think this belongs here and I was right.  Good luck gambling online to all of you.  I am going back to deal with the thousand morons who make it a  joke by playing like donkeys on the texas holdem site I belong to.

  • Hi Gunnylab,

You have absolutely nothing to apologize for.Contrary to some of the comments made, i am sure 99% of us here take your bigheartedness for exactly what it was.....a good heart.

I am so terribly sorry if you feel upset or hurt. That is the last thing that i wanted to happen. It's a damn shame that when we want to express how good we feel inside for a good deed that we are chastised for it.

I feared you may feel this way and there is a time and a place to debate. For me this was not the time nor the place. This border lined ridicule and that is a huge difference.

But behind every dark cloud there is a silver lining. And i hope it is a wake up call to those to think before they write. There are real people with real feelings here.

We love you and you are a breath of fresh air here. And if you leave us i will surely be sad.

    Lips
  • Gunny,remember..sticks and stones can break our bones but words shouldn't hurt us!!Good luck with the donkeys...lol! Also I hope the above doesn't mean you are leaving lcb!!!

  • Hey Gunny, if I may, this thread shouldn't be a motiveator, for you leaveing this site. You recieved many more compliments, than those 2 negatives. For the life of me, I am still at a lose, as to their reasoning  behind that.
OK, Mr Kennedy, Doc, Lips, and the mods, I'm going to do this, as politely as I can.
    1) Mr Kennedy, what in the world are you thinking of, when your attempting to pick apart posts, from a positive post?
    2) Doc, no I'm not offended, irritated well thats kind of obvious. To the 2 of you, let's start a new thread on politics, or religion. I'm sure your aware we can debate for years, or untill the cows come home.
This issue with gunny and the child, is just not debatable. It also appears gunny is considering leaveing LCB. I'm sure you 2 now can't be jumping for joy, over this. He's obviously a decent individual, if I we're walkin in your mocassins, I'd throw in the white towel, and offer an apology.
                                           Rico

  • Gunnylab I am sorry for my role in this.  My "bragging" remark was inappropriate.  Please stay.  :'(

  • Sweet Gunny...

Don't let anything negative someone says to you or about you get you down...If someone has nothing better to do that to criticize you and make you feel bad, then you must be doing something right!
I truly believe that none of us here would ever try to hurt/harm your feeling intentionally....

It's a sad world that we live in today...
I look around, there are too many bad but too little good news these day.
When I saw your post, I was really happy to see there is still goodness in people that offset the positive to negative energy and not even once have i thought anything else besides simply trying to help.
You know...I see people everyday who are are always worrying about what they look like or how they should look but when it comes down to it, the real beauty is in the heart.
The heart is what tells other people who you are, not what you look like and to me, you re one of those people that have good hearts and souls.

Gunny, you can't seriously thinking to leave us...I am terribly devastated even thinking about not being able to see many of your great posts and sharing friendship...
Please don't let me cry... :'(

  • Shake it off, gunnylab, take a breather if it will help, but don't stay gone long, please.

  • Lips, now would I "monkey wrentch" a thread?

rico...where has anyone been critical of gunny?  What should one expect when they start a thread with the heading "This probably doesn't belong here but..."  The discussion has been very interesting and civil.  I don't see a problem.

Note this folks.  This thread has over 600 views.  Giving and receiving (and our motives) is a highly interesting topic on lots of levels.

  • Posted here are several examples of posters giving to what they thought would be beneficial.  Other factors, how they gave, what they gave to, the fact posters felt compelled to share it shows a hint of the kind of character that is latent, what is beneath all of the political correctness and manners that is expected in being social.

Obviously this lack of character statement was directed at me.  Sorry you feel that way.

Gunny, You did something nice and wanted to share.  Nothing bad about that.  Sometimes those who only think of themselves like to slam those more giving.

Take the positives you got and leave the rest behind.

Thanks for sharing the update of the youngster opening his gift. That made my day a bit brighter. smiley
  • OMG exclamation!!!!!!!! I guess I messed up again.  I am not upset at the negative posts.  I am the king of negativity.  I am more upset at myself because my wording in my original post must have been bad if someone thought I was bragging and then a debate over charities.  I AM NOT LEAVING LCB.  I am going back to my texas holdem club because I cant get any good bonuses  anymore on the slots I like to play.  I get bored playing rival slots and for the life of me I cant figure out how anyone reaches the playthru on rtg sites.  In my mind a great random jackpot win is the only way it can happen.  Betting only $1 a spin I never hit even a small one.  For some stupid reason I only like top game slots.  I have increditable luck with them.  The problem is other than the Rome Partner sites, which pays me in 5 weeks if I beg Noah, it got to the point I couldnt get paid on my withdrawals.  In the last 6 months I reversed and played back over $20,000 in withdrawals and money in my accounts that qualified for withdrawals.  A funny example of this is what happened 6 weeks ago in the middle of the nite.  It was 2 am and I was close to going to bed but my 13 year old retarded beagle comes down with an upset stomach.  In and out in and out he goes everytime this happens.  I knew I would be up until at 6 am with him.  So I wouldnt fall asleep I searched every top game site for the best bonus I could find.  All I was doing was an attempt to kill a few hours while I let my retarded beagle in and out.  The non paying Aztec Casino had the best bonus, 450%.  I know not to play there I couldnt get paid in 10 weeks the last time I did a withdrawal.  Well I had 148 credits left of my 275 after an 1 1/2 hours.  My beagle went to sleep earlier than I expected so I decided to use up my 148 remaining credits playing $2.50 a spin on Merry Bells.  I got 10 free spins and on the 7th one I got 5 wilds x 5 or $5000.  Then another 10 free spins bonus and got the other bonus inside the free spins for $1,100.  My account went from 148 credits to $6,300.  I reached my playthru with $4,800 left.  At 5 am I thought I made a great decision with a brillant idea.  I decided to bribe customer service so I would get paid.  I offered $500 of my withdrawal to throw a dinner party for the people there.  LOL, the Aztec Casino Manager would NOT come discuss this in the chat with me and ignored all my emails.  I gave up and played my account down.  It was at $600 2 weeks later and back up to $4,500 it went.  I tried again to throw a party and again he ignored me.  Another week and a half went by and my account reached zero.  I was never upset because I knew I wouldnt get paid without the bribe.  My playthru total ended up to be 138,000.  All I needed was like 12,400.  I couldnt leave this site if I wanted 2.  I keep waiting for LIPS to get nasty on a forum thread.  I would miss TAADAA's barney avatar and WNANHEE's little monkey pictures.  There are so many great people that post on LCB and whether I am playing at online casinos or not I read twice a day the forums.  I wish the best of luck to all of you with your gambling online and TAADAA is still my hero.

  • Now it has nearly 1000 reads.

Yes...what is the REAL reason we give?  Darn good question.  Do we give out of some need to feel good about ourselves?  What does it mean to give unselfishly?

    All deep stuff!

  • Letting go of ego is the closet thing to being God like.

It is almost nearly impossible for humans not to have ego in some capacity. Ego extends beyond wanting recognition. It is being totally and utterly selfless in it's full capacity.

Try to go even a few hours completely free of ego. It is a lot harder than you may think. From the simplest things you may question yourself.

"I think i will make a cake today because my loved one loves chocolate cake". Are we fulfilling our need for praise, if so that's ego.

    See what i mean...........

  • Ok, Lips I admit I have an ego, and I'm sorry...and if we're still friends I love chocolate cake.
